Name your ship and crew

Hi,

I would like to know if we will be able to choose the name of our ship (will it be a unique name) ?
And what about the crew will they all have random names or chosen one ?

You will be able to choose the name of your ship.

It appears they will be using a system so that you can name your ship whatever you want, even if someone else is using that name. You account name will follow if that is the case when private messaging someone, like this:

USS_Cryptic@TechDragon
USS_Cryptic@kiura

Your will ALSO be able to choose whatever names you want for your bridge crew, as well as their race and appearance. Your regular hundreds and hundreds of general crew members will likely not be named.

Crew names? You mean like individual crew members? I imagine not - you might possibly be able to name your Bridge/Alpha-Shift crew, since they're the ones you'll be working with the most, but anyone below that would be auto-assigned a random Trek-themed name.

I can't wait to see some of the ship names out there.

I shudder at the thought of all the new guilds springing up based off ship names - "The Enterprise Guild," "The Voyager Fleet"...I mean, it's great that we get to choose our own names and all, but I hope it doesn't get too out-of-hand.

You will be able to name your ship, however I think it would be rather tedious to name your 100+ crew members.

i cannot declare stongly enough how much i dislike this approach. While i too say this meathod from the Champions site, i sincerly hope this will not carry over to STO.

I'm hoping they take a similar but different approach.

IMO it should go Player name, ship name, global name.

Ex:

John Smith, then if there is to many John Smith's around...

John Smith of USS Cryptic, and then if need be...

John Smith@J_Smith

Has the same basic effect but more of a Star Trek feel.

How will multiple ship names be handled? As the Awen Fan Club grows and grows, I'm sure there will be a couple USS Awens flying about.

I have wrote an entire list of potential ship names. One thing you can do is take a book you like, and write down any character names or places you like.

I wonder if you guys can help me out. I'm starting to name my crew. Here is what I have so far, and what I need help with.

Captain- Vulcan Female- T'Pora
First Officer- Tellerite Male- Gurun ( It's from Goron, the species in the Zelda series)
Science Officer- Andorian Male- ?
Communications- Human Female- Lakshmi Patel
Tactical- Human Male- Arnold Morris
Pilot- Vulcan Male- Khrel

I've been thinking a lot about my bridge crew names as well, I got the crew pretty much figured out in terms of race and gender. I only got a few names planned at the moment.... right now my final bridge crew as planned will be around 10 members. (Im sure only larger ships will ge tthis sort of chief bridge crew though)

Ship Name:
USS Zodiac

This will be my starting crew, as im sure smaller ships mean smaller bridge crews to start:

While I agree they'll probably use the same naming convention that hey are using in Champions I think that instead of your ship name being what is used to identify you in chat it will be your character's (captain's) name. I say this because you will be able to upgrade to different ships which could have different names.

That makes a lot of sense really.

Though if its just captain name I could see them forgoing Champions system if Cryptic deems it too complex to include (vs the COH model)

Afterall, Captain's names arent quite as limited as superheros or ships. Unless everyone just wants to be named like...Joe Smith.

For my Captains name I'm thinking of using an anagram of my real name but I want more details on the naming before I go that route.
