I just had to toss thisvid out. I don't see this many ships at one time, but if if can happen what a great fight it will be. lol

You know, I was skeptical about having fleets (of 100+ ships), but after this video, I am SUPER EXCITED!

If they can get the game to handle such large numbers, then I really hope we get to see some suitably large and dramatic combat.
Also, I hope that the combat mechanics prevent combat following EvE-Online's model of the entire fleet focusing their fire on a small number of targets......but then again, given that Star Trek combat has almost always been very short-ranged, it shouldn't be as much of an issue, especially when firing arcs are added into the equation.....

That would be awesome from both sides. Defending a space station from an enemy fleet, or trying to destroy an enemy Fleet's space station.

I would love to see something like that at some point, and take part in it obviously.
The problem is I wouldn't really expect these kinds of battle unless it's a guild vs. guild or some kind of event. However, that would make them rarer, and thus more enjoyable.
As longs as these epic battles are available for everyone every once in a while, I can’t see anything going too badly wrong. Obviously lag could be a factor, especially if we end up having all the ships from an entire sector taking each other out.
Even more interesting than a 1 vs. 1 confrontation, I’d like to see something 3-way or more: Federation vs. Klingons vs. Romulans perhaps?

Good comments :) I was expecting more "PWNED", "OWNED", "HAXXHAXX" comment's but you stroke the right balance.
I WANT THERE TO BE MORE SHIPS THEN STARS!!!

They could have a battle like that, give us a big fight with some rewards on a rare occasion. Let us enter the zone, keep us from traveling past a certain point on the map, give us 30 minutes to gather and plan it out, and then release us at each other. Only as a rare battle though, maybe 1 time per month, to win a zone for that month, a battle where once you lose, your out of the fight, but you can watch the rest of it from someone else's point of view if you want.
Open fighting though, I wana see some smaller scale stuff so I can slip in with a few ships and take on a few federation or klingon if I play federation at the time and engage in a small open battle, but I generally think they should have a system of matching us into fights for pvp for generally balanced battles, with ome open area and give us incentives to have that big scale battle

Let's not turn STO into WoWTrek though...

I'd enjoy some big ol' space battles like that. It's where organising your fleets would be crucial.

That is a hard thing to avoid when they did some many things right. They had to screw up a lot of things too but still they have some good ideas. Like the contested area in WotLK, it is only open to being captured every three hours, in the case of STO it could be more like 3 days to a week or so.

Or one area for a month to encourage players to have a truly massive battle over a certain location. Some areas for a month for the really big fights, some areas a few days or a week with lesser battles, or whatever?

Being able to participate in a massive grand fleet battle like the one in the video, whether it be PvP or PvE (hopefully both), would be amazing feature to have in STO.
The biggest problem would be lag. With that many vessels it would seem next to impossible to avoid. However the staff at Cryptic is made up of some really talented and clever people. If anyone can pull something off like this, they can.

A month almost seems to long, wouldn't allow as many people to get in on the battle if for just that one day they get stuck doing something else, Maybe 2 weeks is a good ownership time? Of course we don't even know what the benefits of owning these zones are yet.

I think something like that would be fun to partake in once in awhile. I prefer small encounters scale 1vs1, 2vs2 as I feel it has a more rewarding experience, as long as both small or large encounters were easy to find and participate in I would be quite pleased.
A large factor in a fight like this is lag, if the game engine can handle it I'd be willing to go a few rounds on a large fleet fight and see what I think!

Can't say I agree with scripted PvP events in PvP zones, no no no.
This game should move away from that kind of stuff. The PvP zones should be open, available to everyone. No queues, no 'Defend Planet X events', non of that crap. I feel that the Neutral zone will be all of these things though, but the exterior zones should most definitely not be. Allow Fleets to maintain areas of operations in the outer most parts of the map, allow them to solidify their positions with starbases and such, allow these to be captured or destroyed by the opposing faction. This, in my opinion, will be the only way to encourage EvE style battles of 100-200 ships. You'll never see battles like that in the Neutral zone. I fear it will just be another Alteric Valley, 80 random people , each with their own objectives, no teamwork, same old crap.

Yes, I hope it leans in the direction of unscripted player events. Maybe scripted Borg events but leave players to battle it out against each other. If a fleet builds a space station in a sector it becomes theirs. Allow rival fleets the option to destroy the space station and claim the place as theirs. Fleets could get a resource bonus to controlling the sectures.

I hope the combat isn't like that, clearly the older/weaker ships have no chance (some blowing up in one hit). The tactics shown clearly emphasized explosions over brains. You should never send your weakest ships in first, they harass, not break through lines. Also, it probably would have been better for the Feds had they opened up earlier with their torpedoes, almost the entire battle with fought with phasers/beam weapons, by the time the battle actually started everyone was too close to use torpedoes. Torpedoes are the big equalizer for smaller ships, phasers have varying strengths based on size limits, but a photon torpedo does the same damage regardless of the vessel it comes from (I know there is micro photon torpedoes, but you get what I'm saying).

Really cause those fighters that they sent in first were doing some rather nice damage.

what would happen in EVE?
With fleet battles of over 1000 in EvE, the system lags out horribly. Your modual activation time can reach minutes and your FPS can drop to 3/min.
EvE has one hell of a server structure that is getting close to the power of a small super computer. Lets just face it...the tech doesn't exsist to support that many people. But worse still, if the server side can handle it, its people PCs that can't. Every person would need hugh amounts of processing power AND graphics power to "see" that many ships not to mention drones/fighters and weapons fire and explosions..etc....
GOD I wish we could but no way people can get that close with the current tech ...

You know.... its amazing the difference $150 million makes in quality lol
Although those are some of the best scenes ever filmed in startrek
I don't see why it couldnt be done without anything special, the horde raid stormwind to kill the king and it looks like that lol

I played eve onlien a lot, and was fleet commander in a few 400+ ship battles, and i took part in 1 day long 1000+ ship battle. was amazing fun but lag made it unplayable for many.
voice chat is absolutly essencial, as are voice coms disipline. but i see this as kinda pointless,
say for example your fleet goes into attack a station and looses 70% of its ships. im guessing it will then be an hour tops before they have another go in the same ships. in eve if you loose your ship its gone same for your fittings.
we need a similar system here, it puts the player on the edge of thieir seet knowing that thwey could loose their ship at any time if there not carefull. does star fleet have stockpiles of 10'000 of galaxy class ships or something ? dont ruin the immersion , keep it real and the players will thank you for it.

I think that we will see pretty massive battles. Faster internet connection and serious graphics processors and cpu's will be required to make it playable. I would say that people who just meet the minimum requirements will have a hard time taking place in large scale pvp combat.
EDIT: I also agree with the poster above me. Even if they don't make it so that your ship is destroyed permanently, I would like to see at least a 24 hour cooldown time for massive repairs or something. Say, maybe a wrecker came and towed your lifeless ship to a station and had it repaired. But it would take 24 to 48 hours to repair. I like that idea as well, because you're going to have trolls that will just go around killing enemy ships that are much weaker than them.

Repairs are fine with me, but not losing your ship. Don't make this another EVE.

Your hardware means jack s****if the server pukes cause he can't handel all the ships/players. :p
