No, this isn't a "Will there be a S.E." Thread.
Every major MMO for the past 5 years, barring a select few have launched with Special Editions, what would YOU like to see in a STO special edition?

Me?

As for as little goodies I think a star ship mini replica of some type would be pretty cool, probably the sovereign re-fit we've seen across the trailers.
Or maybe a communicator badge?
An art book is an old but goodie and really fits well with trek, but perhaps they could take it one step further with starship detailed information. Deck count, engines, weapon mounts
A soundtrack is a must, there's no music like trek music.

For in game items, nothing major or game breaker of course. I liked WAR's idea with a little item for increased EXP whenever you chose to use it.
Maybe a special uniform for your captain and a couple different different custimaztion options for both your ship and bridge crew.

The trick is to make it good enough for players to spend extra, but not so good as to give people an unfair advantage. As such, I think it would be good to have more out-of-game items than ingame items. I mean sure, like you said, maybe a little XP boost or like an item that increase all XP gains by, say, 2%, but naught more than that. I would love to get a communicator from the first season, or a phaser from Next Generation. Music would be excellent. Not sure about the diagrams though as there has already been many blueprintbooks about different ship classes. So, yeah, definitely out-of-game stuff, but not so much big-time ingame stuff.

Your own Beagle on the bridge that increases crew morale :D

lol I love the idea of the Beagle. But I like the choices of the xp gain as War did.

I would actually like to see everything be done in a Digital-Download Format, rather than just creating trash by having a larger box and fluff items that end up in the bin a week.

So what I would like to see in the SE is:

Digital Down Load, instead of Box (why create more trash)
More 'In-Game' items instead of out of game tinkets

Special Uniform
Special Designation
Special Title
Special Item for 'Ready Room' (when interiors go live)

I only ever buy SE or CE for the 'IN-GAME' items, really. Even the 'ArtBook' just gets shelved.

Now this is what I'm talking about! This is the kind of stuff I look for in a special edition, especially with an mmo.

I detest DD only releases, I would would be really ****ed if I had to do the DD to get the bonus stuff.

Almost certain:
Soundtrack cd
Behind the scenes footage on dvd
Art book
A couple of trial keys to give friends.
Map poster type thing.

What I would also like to see:
Ship schematics on dvd with 3d model viewing (like you were looking at them on your computer in game)
In game items will probably be a classic ship (which would be neat looking but nothing special) or uniform option.
In box item...I think a com badge pin type thing would be fantastic or perhaps a pewter type mini of the starting ship.

-id love to have some kind of art book to look at. I think sto has great art in it so far!
-some cosmetic stuff for in game would be nice nothing that would effect gameplay the rdy room item sounded kinda cool but id like somthing that other players could see and go "he bough the spcail edition"
-a communicator badge sounds like a great idea as well as the module of the sovgein class ship.

If they are aiming for a box set, I'd rather have a small model of a modded ship, starter or endgame, just as long as it's something that shows off the ship customization ability of the game.

It wouldn't have to be expensive just something you can sport on your desk. I never hang folded posters on my wall no matter how epic they are. Unless you have a themed room it will look goofy.

A small replica building set to do while your ship is at Warp, with mutliple variations of each part so you can build your ship from the game, or the ship your aiming for.

Or a code that gives you access to certain areas of Risa......

so basically you want startrek lego :P

I got the special dvd version of city of heroes and got thoese travel powers (ie sprint with different effects) and a customised cloak.

However what i would prefer they do is just release the special edition stuff as a purchasable add on already available online. That way i dont have to go out and find the special edition box (i nearly always digital download now) but still gain the bonus items.

I think if they provided a different uniform type which showed you had the special edition version. but nothing that impacts on the game such as unique ships or special exp bonus items or bags or whatever.

Somthing which says "hey i got the special version" not "hey i need to go get the special version"

A special edition would not really be special or limited if anyone could just go online whenever and buy it (though you can usually order special editions long after they leave shelves).
I think that retail footprint directly corresponds to success of an mmo so they need to do something to make people walk into stores to buy the game.
(I do like having the digital option, but in the end I always buy the retail because I like having the case and extras.)
You can easily preorder the special edition at Gamestop.com , Bestbuy.com , or Amazon.com when the time comes and you still would not have to leave the house and most have it set up so that it ships to where you have it day one.
Perhaps Cryptic can make it where if you buy the collector's edition from them as an added perk you get a code to download the game digitally while you wait for the hard copy to arrive.

Cosmetic ship or uniform upgrades do absolutely nothing to affect gameplay at all.

I agree with most of the original post, but even as someone that is definitely going to get the special edition of the game (assuming there will be one), I do not think that it is a good idea to have the exclusive in-game item provide any sort of benefit to the player that might give them an advantage over players that did not purchase the special edition of the game. Honestly, even though I like having exclusive items as much as the next person, I believe it introduces some unfairness relating to what someone's economic status is in real life -- not a big one, mind you, but I do think that it could be considered an issue nonetheless.

I also think that having a beagle or some other in-game pet is a great concept for an exclusive item!

I wonder how difficult it would be to include a full sized fully functional transporter system with which I could kidnap the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and hang out with them all day while they answer all my decade-old fan questions...

am I really the only one who would want "show-off" pets? the non-combat ones that just follow you around and do nothing good at all? ;)

edit:
btw.. I'm all for in-game items, much better then a book with some nice artwork

As i've said before, and hope some member of the development staff runs across this

I would way, way.... waaaay prefer, in game ship over a plastic toy. go ahead and give me a somewhat large ship, something that other players will have to wait months for lol

but, anyways.. i buy my plastic toys from diamond and playmates, like my spanky new movie Enterprise thats sitting on my pc.. or my Soverign thats over on the wall.. or the NX-01 next to that..

then the battle damaged 'Wrath of Kahn" edition 1701.. limited to like 2,000 prints

not to mention the diamond collectible galaxy class thats on preorder over at bigbadtoystore.com

I think you get the picture here.. Yeah I want a collectors edition, but wanna show off my uber toys IN game

The only reason I would fork out for a special edition is if I got some in-game item.

This really -- although I appreciate that people like collecting stuff, any responsible software company in this day and age should be heavily promoting non-boxed versions of their software, particularly when that software is linked to idealistic franchises like Star Trek...

I know that game publishers generally refuse to open digital downloads at launch to ensure that the boxes get sold in shops and investment isn't wasted, it would be nice to see Cryptic break this mold but I won't hold my breath.

I hate digital downloads. When i pay for something i like to have something i can touch and open. Ive bought all special editions of the MMOs i have.

Things i would consider good extras :

A metal Starfleet insignia in the box ( like the gold ring given with LOTRO ).
A unique adventure on the holodeck.
Varrious pet options.
Art book with art from the game.
Soundtrack cd.
An episode of TOS on dvd ( hopefully the Menegarie pt 1 + 2 ).

I have to agree Ive never been a fan of digital downloads, for a number of reasons really.
A, I too like to have the physical media
B, if you ever need to reinstall for any number of reasons you need to not lose the information you used to DL and then spend the time needed to redownload it all again. and yes I know, you could just keep the install file on your HD but, they are LARGE files and again, if I ever had to reformat an HD well that just defeated the purpose.
