Big news! Atari confirm to Gamespot that it will launch within this fiscal year!

The Atari executive also addressed Star Trek Online, which is expected to launch during his aforementioned holiday time frame. "Star Trek is on track to being a big launch in this fiscal year, especially given the franchise's success and response to the new film. We are thrilled to work on it and delighted with the new audience that is building with the movie. We plan to formally unveil the title in the very near future."

I thought STO was "formally unveiled" in summer 2008 at Las Vegas? Opening up an official website and forums and released a trailer and screenshots and giving multiple interviews nationwide to AP, and then for the next year released more information and screenshots and another trailer, kind of rings of an "unveiling."

Read the OP, "within this fiscal year" (which ends next March) and "expected to launch during his aforementioned holiday time frame" (Christmas '09). Obviously, they're going to avoid an exact date, but that suggests to me that they're aiming for November or December with an absolute deadline of March no matter what.

As I said before, this is confirming what we know from Cryptic's previous comments back when Atari jumped on board. It's only the self appointed experts, the armchair developers on the forums, that have suggested anything else. They just suggested it often enough that people started to think it was true.

No, Gamestop Online and Amazon.com have January 2010 release dates for their preorders.

dude STO has been in the works for much longer then since 2008, Cryptic simply got the licence in 2008 january.

the original STO also had a different design, in that it wasn't cartoonish it was a proper graphics game, the ships looked much better there is one picture of an Akira ingame picture and some inship pics too. its a shame the company stopped producing games.

Cryptic Fanboys don't bother replying to this message with your hate I was simply stating FACT.

You are kidding me right? Perpetual ended up ditching interiors and player bridge crew before they folded. Even reversed their graphics for the game.

This is one of their last screen shots before they were caught for fraud. http://img30.imageshack.us/my.php?image=intscreen.jpg

Here is one of Cryptics http://www.startrekonline.com/screenshots?img=66

Which one is more cartoony now? You can stop saying your opinions are facts now.

By "proper graphics" do you mean it looks like a video game from 1990? I'm not trying to knock you here, just understand where you are coming from. Some people like that look. Compairing everything I've seen Cryptics graphics are far better in my opinion.

I don't see any ambiguity here. Atari said what they said. Gamestop is NOT the place to look for clues about a release date. I know a regional manager here in So. Cal. and he sees STO as vaporware right now. Granted he's only a regional manager but if they had anything information that differed from what Atari is saying he'd know about it.

Thanks for making the thread. :)

But better they take their time (developing and beta alike) and make sure we have a great product then rushing it. So far it seems their on the right track :)

I think it makes marketting sense to get the game out in or around the release of the movie on DVD. At the very least, include a bonus featurette on the DVD/Blu-Ray on STO and its tie-in with the movie. It's the perfect opportunity to showcase the game to a massive audience who will no doubt be buying the movie in record numbers. It gives STO the bonus of being one of those rare breeds of MMO that can tie-in (albeit loosely) and capitalize on a movie franchise. Other examples such as LOTRO, SWG, SWTOR, Matrix etc.

Fact. Right. The FACT is all Perpetual had were those still shots. They had no game engine, no demo, squat. They were a sham and got caught.

I've seen some screenshots from when Perpetual was still making it...they looked like total garbage.

The bottom line is that STO will be directly competing with the new Star Wars MMO, and because of that Cryptic really needs to get on the ball and set something in stone.

I should hope that official confirmation from the developer's parent company that this game, for which many of us have been investing so much energy in for so long, has received a "release no later than" date would at least qualify as moderately "big" news. Hopefully we're not all that hard to impress. ;)

LOL as to opposed to you being a Perpetual fanboy,

The screenshots for their version was pretty crappy.

I'd be happy with a Jan-April 2010 as thats when I expected the game to be released anyway.

Because ToR has... anything set in stone? I think not. ToR has a couple of vanilla screenshots, vaguely defined classes... oh and, what do we know of the gameplay? Absolutely nothing. ToR isn't even NEAR the development progress that STO is. ToR is also not slated for release until the end of next year.

They are planning an 09 release as well for ToR, they've got a lot of screenshots and things, a few more classes mentioned now, keeping some hidden I'm sure.

edit: of course other sources say jan 2010 and late 2010, but some say late 2009

And considering my experiences with Perpetual during Gods and Heroes Beta I'm relieved that Cryptic took over this IP.

The point is that Cryptic wants and needs to have STO out, and get past the initial birthing pains that every mmo experiences before it launches.
Cryptic also needs to keep putting out media and updates to keep attention on STO, especially with the movie having done so well and still doing well Cryptic should be jumping all over themselves putting news out there.
STO may be far away but they have already had decent coverage of their Bounty Hunter and Trooper class reveals.

I do think it's pretty important that they release before Star Wars: The Old Republic. Star Trek vs Star Wars.... A battle for eternity. Except unless it's based on the 3 prequels (which it's not) Star Wars will usually win.

I doubt SW:TOR will be out this year.

Star Wars usually wins? I think not. Trek was influential while George Lucas was making crappy movies in college.
