I was thinking about this so I figured I'd say some things.

In Star Trek Online how would dying be dealt with? Some games take away XP others like WoW makes your run back to your dead body as a spirit. Also some use Permanent Death! (That's a No no lol)

Here's my theory of what I'd like to see. After you fall In battle you have a choice.Being revived by your medical officer & If that option Isn't available.Screen goes black & you wake up In the Medical Bay of either Starfleet's closest base or on your ship.Unsure which perhaps both options are best. After revival perhaps a revival sickness could occur? In which the Medical Bay has to keep you there for a certain amount of time to treat It.Some thoughts...

Then you ask.How do you return to battle fast?Beam down on your last recorded location on the planet. My personal thought...

Whats your thought & Ideas?

well i think that's a decent idea, the Dev's said that death really wouldn't be that big of a deal....

once again transcripts from Q and A session....

Q: If we are in the middle of a mission and we die or fail part of it, what happens? Do we resume at the same point or do we have a penalty for the rest of the mission or do we part with the penalty in another step in the mission?

A: It's actually perma-death and we cancel your account and you have to buy the game again.

Craig: Naaa that isn't it at all, we're really trying to make it so that death isn't that big of a deal, I now it sounds kind of weird but I think that the MMO industry is kind of moving beyond death as something that is really really painful. We want people to really enjoy the game experience, and experience the game, I think that if death and dying was a gigantic part of the Star Trek universe than we would focus a lot more on making sure that there was a huge penalty to it, but we really do want you to pick up where you left off.. get back in, get that sense of achievement, you know maybe there will be some damage to your ship systems, some of your items may degrade a little bit.. but really it is kind of get right back in and go.

I know they talked about It not being a big deal, but we all know even If It's not a big deal It's still going to happen In 1 form or another lol.Believe the Las Vegas Webcast talked about some of the Issues, but not In detail.I just like to see some other thoughts that I couldn't of think of that perhaps Is better :)

I'm hoping that you lose some % of your crew (only the lower deck/red shirt crew, never your NPC bridg crew) when you die. When you rez at a star base, you could get a generic crew to replace them and go on your merry way, or you could spend the time to regain to a really great crew.

There just has to be some sort of death penalty, nothing that stops you from getting right back out there or cripples you, but also stings a bit. I like my idea because, unlike xp loss, it doesn't stack. If for some reason you keep dieing, it doesn't affect you as much for the long haul. And the buffs from a a good lower deck crew wouldn't be necessary, just helpful.

It would also be nice if there were things for crafters to replace. In order to have a good player economy, there has to be something to replace. I'm not sure if this would correspond with death though. Maybe just warp cores, dilithium and things would have to be replaced from time to time. This would also keep inflation down.

i'm not usually about self promotion, so i don't know why i'm doing this, but this was totally my question from the IGN Voom chat :p

When I was asking it, i was more concerned about how directed the episodic missions would be. Would failure be possible type thing. Zinc took it from more the death angle, which is fine, I probably didn't ask it as well as I should have.

In one of the interviews, Zinc cits 'replacing lost crew members' as a reason for visiting the star base. So that's why I put my request above.

Ohhh...you trying to 1-up us all now since that was YOUR question. PSH.:D

Glad that death won't be too harsh, I don't need a reason to clunk my head on the wall after dying.

What If I was on a planet lol Did my crew just up & get the herpes or something & just start killing over? They must of just went Into madness seeing there captain die & committed suicide.

:) I'm just messing, but kinda making a point either way.The crew shouldn't die because I croaked on planet hehe.

Does anyone know if we will have to PAY to repair our damaged ships? I hope so.

Damaged ship is like...recovering health between killing pigs.
Most ship repairs are done by crews, easy to explain ship hull and shield recovery.

I think character death from a "play point is easy to do." Emergency Beam out after you fall to the ground for example.

The real test is a believable, workable way to have yer ship destroyed and then appear leaving a space dock immediately after.

so they would beem you out in space?, they can't beem ships in the movies or series
and I fervently don't hope you'll get back where you died just like that, it would ruin events and PvP

I hope players will have to travel backk to where they were

there have been some suggestions in another thread that I like
when you die in PvP, you would get the option to get captured and have to break-out, and while doing so you could tap into the enemy computer and give your faction a temp buff, like showing enemy on map for 5 sec or so... some realistik info you would be able to send to all ally ships
or you could choose to have the ship destroid, be sent to the nearest starbase and wait a few minutes for the ship to be ready for travel, perhaps you could pick-up new crewmembers while you wait the 5 minutes or so

if you're playing PvE then obviesly you wouldn't have the option of being captured

the reason for the waiting game is to prevent players from rushing in head first, get people to use just a bit of tactics

there will be no sense of victory if players were back before you knew you have defeated them

I think the waking up in sickbay and having revival sickness or whatever is a cool idea. But not being restricted to the sickbay for an amount of time.
Also maybe if you were killed in your ship you wake up on a federation planet(Say you got into your escape pod along with your bridge crew) but if you were killed on a ground crew you wake up in your ships sick bay. (Say your were knocked out or incapitated in someway and then the rest of the people with you beamed you back to the ship.)

I like the idea of Ground -> ship -> station :)
but I really do belive players should be restricted to sickbay/hospital for a few minutes, at leats if they died while PvPing
if it's PvE then perhaps players should be able to get back a bit faster
