Well your probably going to be able to name your ship, so I was thinking if anyone else had already thought of some name ideas. I myself was thing of something along the line of the USS Willpower. Has a nice ring to it.

I have a word document with a running list of names. I'll type them out whenever I think of them so I dont forget. I also assign a number to them as well. I got a couple examples. USS Grundsfeld = NX - 0419, USS Fire Spirit = NX - 5100 or USS Tarmack = NCC - 9104.

So i'm going to go with USS Vantage, USS ShinRa, USS Conan... or Schwarzenegger, USS Cloud, USS Bill Murray, USS Peter Griffin, USS John Locke, USS Flump, USS Becks (after the beer), USS Colossus (after Shadow of the Colussus), USS Hobb (after Robin Hobb), USS Bond or USS Jeremy Clarkson.

Ha, if you ever get a really big ship you should totally name it the USS Colossus. Of course that would make quite a few enemy players shooting all over you trying to find your weak spot.

I've always thought that there should be more in-canon references in ship naming, and many modern warships are named after famous leaders or commanders. Some that I'm considering are:
USS Nechayev
USS Robert April
USS William Ross
USS Hiram Roth
USS Jaresh-Inyo
I'm kind of uncertain about including the first names, but I figure it'll make the names stand out more in the game.

Since we are already at it...
Do you have to put U.S.S. before the name if you want it to be shown or does it appear automatically?
Furthermore, Can we also use the 'traditional font' for the Ships name?
Aem and well will there be a seeable NCC - Number?'
For my Ships names:
U.S.S. Dreadnaught
U.S.S Caliburn
U.S.S Stheno

I like it, a little dark since I'm not the role-model good guy. But I get the job done without violating the Prime Directive.... Too many times, that is.
I'm a perception-class experimental prototype (hence the NX-71101 "Navy Experimental")
I wish Gene Rodenberry would have given us guidelines when using the numbers associated with our ship name. Instead he named the 1701 after the house across the street from his childhood.
Anyone have any better method?

It would seem logical that multiple ship names would be allowed, based on the number of people who could be playing the game. I also hope they allow multiple captain names as well and go with something like having the server assign a unique Service Number as a unique identifier so that we can avoid having to come up with a unique character name to play.
That way each person can create a character and name their ship.
As for ship names I like to select a name from famous battles such as: Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, Bunker Hill, Saratoga, Cannae, Anzio, Waterloo, Balaclava or Ypres. Also famous warships of the past are a good choice: Yamamoto, Bismarck, Hood, Ark Royal, Littorio, Black Swan, Yorktown or Hornet.

The Fleet that I'm a member of has a naming convention for our ships. Not a hard and fast rule, mind you, just kind of a general suggestion to help with identifying ourselves to others and is supportive of our theme. Therefore, we generally name our ships after cities, landmarks, famous persons, and other things and events which are tied to the great State of Texas.
Some examples...
USS Dallas
USS Houston
USS Comanche (local Native American tribe)
USS Rio Grande (the river which forms the border between Texas and Mexico)
USS San Jacinto (the site of the final battle between Texans and the Mexican Army, which secured Texas independance)
USS Nimitz (the WWII Pacific Fleet Admiral, who was born and raised in my home town in Texas)
USS Crockett (David "Davy" Crockett, famous early American Pioneer and US Congressman who left the US to help fight the war of independance in the Texas Territory. He died in the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio)
We have dozens more.
We are also planning on calling our Starbase/Fleetyard "Alamo Station".
Other "themed" Fleets will likely do something similar.
I'm hoping that the Devs will create a system which will mark each ship with a unique registration, and leave the naming convention fairly open and repeatable.
I also hope that they have some kind of naming filter to prevent Players from naming their ships with the kind of names that most of us don't want to see...like some of the ones posted in this thread...as well as canon ships like the Enterprise.

I can definitely see naming restrictions in general being useful and possibly even necessary (I wouldn't want to see USS UGOTPWNED either), but I would hate to get a prefabricated name. If I didn't like it for some reason it would bother me constantly.
The most I'd accept in that direction would be a "randomize" button with pregenerated and "approved" names that I could choose from until I got one I was happy with.

well, this could be avoided pretty simple - say you get a new shipclass, theres a few with different names but of the same class to choose from, like for example how they did it in SFC 3.
but i would prefer a randomize-button more aswell.
PS: but i could live with a set name of a ship, since its the crew that matters, and we are totally free to customize them.

Like a list of acceptable names? It'd have to be a pretty long list... adjectives like Defiant and nouns like Willpower and all those fitting names... and you could use names of places and mythology too... but it'd take a while to create a list big enough.
But if they did such a thing I hope there'd be a search function so if you could see if there was an available and acceptable name you thought of.

I think where going to see all types of ship names. Yes the Good and the Bad. My only idea would be to have to send your ship name via in-game to be looked over by some Cryptic staff member to approve it but that’s a horrible idea. That’s a waste of time and a Job. The best they will be able to come up with is a filter to stop as many people from using cuss words or canon names for their ship. It's that or a random name generator and no one wants that!
lionbush
05-13-2009, 02:50 AM
I think a filter will suffice to start. Then if there are any of Cryptics staff in game and they encounter a ship name that doesn't really belong, they can force the player to change it. Maybe even a reporting system for really immature names like 'Itsux' or 'Pwned'. I hate those expressions at the best of times so to see a Starfleet vessel flying around displaying such will grate!
I have no problem with younger people playing the game at all, the more the merrier, but I hope they either have the sense to play it properly withing the universe or the devs keep tight reigns on acceptability.

That would be nice but you do get to keep your old ship, so I don't know if you'll be able to carry the name forward without renaming the old one, if you can even do that in the first place.
As for names I always go tohttp://www.behindthename.com/ to pick mine. That way you can reduce or increase the irony when it comes to naming your ships or even your characters.

yes .. I agree . the old ship would have to be renamed IF we waned to "transfer" the name to our new ship.

Yeah I believe to reuse a name in good maritime tradition the predecessor must have been decommissioned or destroyed. I could see turning a blind eye if its a single server setup and good names are hard to come by. Plus if you started out with a Miranda and named it something foolish would you really want to keep that name when you get to your epic sovereign?
The big question is will other ships be able to have the same name, and will non-standard letters and symbols be allowed? I would rather deal with someone having the same name than be unable to read half the servers names due to a players lack of originality.
Honestly when I see another ship I'd like the top display box to be "Capt. so-and-so" and the second display line be of the, "U.S.S. whatever". That way if people have similar or the same ship names you can distinguish them and exact your revenge on the proper culprit.
I'm sure this topic has been thoroughly debated at Cryptic so I'm sure their system will be solid.

We had one dev talking about reserving their ship name before the game releases, logic would suggest that ship names will remain, unique so to speak.

If this game allows for multiple characters then I have a couple character based ship names but I'm not giving those out. As for generic names I have a couple I plan on using:
USS Shadow Chaser
USS Eclipse
USS Vanguard
USS Saucy Mare(as an homage to ReBoot)
I have plenty more but it all depends on weather or not the name fits the ship in my eyes.

I would name my ship U.S.S. Lawliet. There is a reason for my choice of screen name thus the same goes for my ship name. My favoite fictional character, L Lawliet. May he rest in peace. If that is taken, however, maybe something like U.S.S. Valient would be good. :)

You do know what happened to the last Star Trek ship with that name, right? 3 survivors. Captain not one of them. Just saying. ;)

Mine will be the "USS Cthulhu" since I am a fan of the mythos.
On another thought, people are worried about if you can have 2 ships with the same name, and I realised something.
Kirk had Enterprise, then in Generations that other guy had Enterprise-B, then Picard had Enterprise-D, and when that was destroyed they gave him Enterprise-E. So I think it would be perfectly acceptable in the canon to have, using my ship's name as an example, Cthulhu-B or maybe Cthulhu II and use Roman numerals. Ok, so typically with something like Enterprise-B/C/D/E, the previous model must be out of comission but for the purposes of STO, it would be more than acceptable.

I really hope once we have chosen our ship name, others can't name there ships the same. That would totally ruin the whole point of it for me....

It'd be neat if you could add letters to your additional ships. LIke if my Miranda class was the U.S.S. Bell, then my Excelsior or Galaxy class would be U.S.S. Bell-A, etc. Should be optional though.

I dont think that multiple ships with the same name should be a problem. Cryptic stated that we would be able to choose our own name and registry#. If by some really small chance two ships with the same name and registry#(which I highly doubt will happen)occurs then something like Enterprise-A and then -B should happen.
Thats just my take on it.

I only plan on naming my ships (depending on class) official names and registrys via any tech manuals or online sources. Not making any name sup. That is just me. But i have a feeling, names are gonna be a non-issue, and won't even matter much, except to the player himself.
I have been playing EvE lately, and the name of the charater shows up before the ships name does. I think it may be like that in STO. I hope not, as ship names are an important aspect of Trek.
