Hello. Firstly, I'ld like to say that I'm very excitied about Star Trek Online. There seems to be a lack of science-fiction MMOs, and hopefully STO can rectify that problem to some extent. Now, I know that you guys probably cringe every time a thread like this pops up, and I apologize. I have searched the forums but I haven't found the info I'm looking for.
1.) Is STO mainly focused upon combat? I used to play Star Wars Galaxies some time ago, and the thing that I loved about it was that it had a living, dynamic economy. The depth it offered was amazing. It changed and evolved, much like the real world. I know that there really isn't a traditional economy in STO. Any trading will be done via bartering and not through the use of currency. With only a few planets there probably won't be much to explore. To put it simply, what else can I do in STO besides fighting?
2.) This relates to my first question. Just how many planets will there be in the first release? How big will these planets be? Will these just serve as massive PvP areas or do they serve other purposes besides combat?
Thank you.

Welcome to the forums, you're going to like it here.
Now...onto your questions.
1)STO gives you(as a player) the choice between Exploration and Combat. If you were a PvP-oriented player, the Klingon faction is the way to go.But there is far more to the game than that combat. As for the economy, there will be one,but few details have been released towards it.
2)Its unknown how many planets will be available at launch.Core worlds will be developed by the Dev Team, will countless new ones will be partially randomly generated, creating a (hopefully) almost unlimited map for exploration and discovery.

The devs have said there will be a player based economy. Remember, while Star Fleet itself didn't use currency, Gold Pressed Latinum was widely used throughout the quadrant for trade. It isn't clear what exactly the economy will look like, but you can be confident that there will be crafting, some resource gathering, and trade system.

It's unclear how many there will be, but there will be a lot more to do with them besides PvP.

I know that Klingons are more combat oriented, but I believe this is a misleading post. This is a Faction vs Faction game where you can't attack players of your own faction. Therefore Klingons can only fight Fed and Fed can only fight Klingons in PvP (at launch). So just pick which ever side you like more.
That being said, if you chose to join the Klingons, we'll be happy to have you :D

Welcome to the forums.
1. The game will offer PVE, PVP, and exploration, both in space and on the ground. Everyone can command their own ship, but also follow one of three other general career paths (with branches). Its unknown how much of a player driver (crafting) economy there will be yet. I disagree with the poster above who says go Klingon if you want to PVP. Factions will be reasonably balanced and you can PVP as a Federation captain as well.
2. I agree with the poster above, there is presently no information on how large of a galaxy we can explore at launch and how many planets there will be. However, it sounds like it will be big. The devs have said that crew, technologies, etc. can be acquired through exploration.
Good luck!

Welcome to the circus.
What everyone has said thus far is correct as far as we know. I'd just like to add that, at this stage, PvP will be limited to certain "neutral zone" type areas.
This means there won't be a mass of Klingon ships heading to Earth or a brace of Fed ship heading out to Qon'nos.
As to worlds I'd imagine we would have, at least, the more well known systems from canon such as the major species home systems as well as, Risa, Bajor e.t.c. Outside of that one cannot say.

As others have stated welcome to the forums.
In addition to the answers above, there is a good thread that has compiled most of the Dev comments about the game:
http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=14535
The first couple of posts are usually updated as information is released -- so you do not need to read the entire thread.
And if you don't find answers there, feel free to post here. People are pretty helpful on this forum.
