During ship to ship combat, will there be collision damage? I want to see realistic results of ramming an enemy vessel and not just magically passing through it. "Very well, perhaps today is a good day to die, RAMMING SPEED!" - Worf

there will be collisions, and there will be ramming. However, we do not know if ramming will be an ability, or if collisions will actually do damage.
one of the devs tweeted a few months ago that he was having problems with a bugged "klingon boss" who would instantly cloak and ram his ship as soon as he engaged him.
Who knows, I have not seen a definite answer, but I would hope that "ramming" another ship would be considered a last ditch suicidal manuver.
Probably have to wait until the game is released to get this answer.

I would not go so far as saying 'there will be' ramming. If players find it unfun, they will hard code against it -- ie you ship is able to evade and crew refuses to suicide. I can certainly see people using it to grief far too much.
Personally, I am against ship ramming, just because I can see too many people using it in any losing combat. IMO, if my tractor beams are on line, you should not be able to ram me. And if my tractor beams are off line, then you should be able to destroy me without destroying your own ship. So for the most part, I would want ramming to be excluded.
As for Collision detection for other obits, they said it is in, but they are still iterating (zincism) about its effect (damage, bump, stop, etc).

I could see ramming reducing shield strength, perhaps not armor or hull strength.
I also bet it only works against ships of the other faction.

I'd imagine that ramming would be impossible under ordinary circumstances due to collision prevention programs, meaning if you want to ram then you'd next to do extra "things" to disengage the collision prevention systems to be able to ram. Not to mention it would damage your own ship and I'd imagine that such an overload on all systems (even shields) would damage the ship to the point it wouldn't be able to fight anymore and if it survived just leap home for major, much latinum costing repairs.
Now if we could design a ship that could specifically withstand ramming......

Ramming ship to ship should:
A. Permanently take down the shield where the collision took place.
B. Cause significant hull damaged based on size and speed of impact.
C. Temporarily disable any foreword motion or all movement for at least 30 seconds.
D. Loss of cloak for 60 seconds if applicable.
This is kind of how I could see it setup in the game. As others have said, this should be a last resort if your out of options lol. RAMMING SPEED!!!

I understand that ship-to-ship combat will be 2-dimensional in a sense that the third dimension will not be a factor. Why is this? I understand they don't want battles similar to dogfights but maneuvering effectively is half the fight. Removing "depth" detracts significantly from this.

Collisions would add something to the game, however, maybe it shouldn't truly be there. If it is there, it should be a very bad thing, like causes something like a negative affect on the crew of the ship ramming, making them lose moral and thus be less effective or something;)

Ramming could be a special ability that appears when your shiels or hull integrity reach critical. A last ditch effort to take the opposing bugger out with you.

I think it sits in with cannon.
Ramming should be in as an option.
Last-ditch and as maybe an ability in large fleet battles. If you're going down you may aswell try take them. (eg Hull <10% integrity, Ram ship becomes available on tactical path)
I think it was worf in command of the defiant:

I think Ramming should be in the game, but if your at the point in a battle were you have to ram, you probably aren't doing so well and will be easily evaded. As for the 2d vs 3d combat, were did you se that? Everything I have seen hinted at 3 dimensional thinking, you will roll your ship to protect vital areas, but going to z minus 2000 km wouldn't help with the arc of the phasers.

If they have it in the game, I would definitely want it to be a 'Special' ability that only triggers under certain rare conditions.
And should be guaranteed destruction of your ship (if you are the one initiating the Ram).
This would help mitigate the potential abuse.

it will be 2D but i expect it to be very similar to ST legacy, you can move up or below something but not a whole lot.

As long as it doesn't freeze up every 5 seconds like Legacy does on my comp now.
That thing is buggier than a fly sandwhich.

It is like submarine warfare in a vast man-made lake.
While you have a very large horizontal axis, you have a rather small Vertical axis -- You can only go 'Up or Down' a little bit.
