I think that in the game due to events that has happened The federation could be smaller and new small empires could have tooken foothold in the outer reachers of old fed spaces

What events could make it smaller? I don't see the Federation being any smaller. Bigger in fact.

No way the Federation is getting smaller. The Federation grows exponentially. I believe it is in the 2600's that the Federation is spread across the vast majority of the galaxy. It was in a book, can't remember which one. But even if you don't go by the books, just remember that the Federation will never stop Boldly Going to Seek Out New Life and New Civilizations.

While I don't see this happening in Star Trek Online, never say never. All good things do come to an end.

Smaller might be a problem if the game is skewed toward players choosing to be Federation captains. If that happens, then there will have to be a lot of territory to keep space "empty."

I can't see any reason for the Federation to shrink, if anything it would have expanded significantly. Cryptic have mentioned that Starfleet have discovered a great deal of new technology by the time of STO, including transwarp conduits.

With the advent of transwarp conduits, setting up starbases and forward operations centres becomes much easier and, by extension exploration of areas even further into deep space using regular warp drives faster.

Also, since all ships would have to do to set up new "beachheads" is construct and deploy transwarp conduits, through which prefab starbases can be sent, the Federations rate of territory expansion would be extraordinary.

I don't see that happening at all. Has a Federation member race ever left the Federation?

Heck, they seem stronger for it.

The Klingons are already gaining ground when it comes to building it's territory. The Gorn are surely not going to be the last. I'm wondering if part of the sequestering of the Gorn planet was to indoctrinate them into the Klingon Empire, let alone offering the Gorn the chance to expand 'their' territory (remember the Gorn are very territorial, and if they were to gain more, they'd readily defend it as their own).

With the relationship between the Federation and the Klingon Empire degrading, I can see them keeping their expansion plans a secret. Without a doubt they are expanding outward and away from the Federation and Romulan Star Empire. And they are probably more willing to make alliances with those who wouldn't impede their expansion (this was part of cause for problems between the Federation and the Klingons), let alone try to take over the Klingon Empire (part of the reason why the Romulans and the Klingons broke their own treaties with each other).

Hes right in a sense. If you want to go by the novels (hold you "novels arent cannon sh**, just listen), then after the Dominion War, several members left the federation, brining the count down from near 182 down to the 150s. But at the same time, its been many many years since the Dominion war so im sure the number of members it back up to around 182.

Also, even if federation members leave, it doesnt mean federation controlled space shrinks. The Federation may lose claim to colonies and member systems that leave, but the Federation wouldnt lose that much territory in the end. Most of Federation Space is unihabited systems anyway.

:p

how's that going to happen when your ship is nothing but a pile of debris?

I think STO could certainly change the story. For example the restoration of an aggressive Klingon Empire has led to the Empire swarming into the space of the ally that formerly trusted it, taking back or taking over territory at rapid rate, initially taking the Federation off guard. Now the federation has to fight to win it back. Stuff like that.

We don't want smaller. We want BIGGER.

Size DOES matter.
