no, i think it means something, seeing as cryptic has been saying to wait for CO to launch before we get full details about STO things.

It certainly could mean something, but the official CO FAQ is still vague with no launch date, so does this represent a real launch date?

Nothing from a game production standpoint, but Knight is right that it will have an affect from a PR standpoint. You don't want to overshadow one game with another, or waste your efforts promoting two games at once. I bet we'll start seeing a good amount more info after CO is released.
However, Cryptic seems to be pretty tight lipped about specifics of game mechanics and just sticks with generalities. Not that this is a bad thing, they don't want to pigeonhole themselves. j/s'n

and their source (for those too lazy to click the link)
At an event taking place in the UK today, Cryptic's Design Director and Executive Producer, Bill Roper, informed Strategy Informer that Champions Online would be released in the US and Europe on 14th July 2009.
Expect more details on Champions Online from this event soon.

This is just for PC, right? Any word on the console release date? It'll be interesting to see how close together they are.

Lets wait for the May 8th announcement.
The launch of Champions Online has more to do with freeing up PR stuff and reducing concerns of Overshadowing.

Certainly looks very reasonable and believable, and if true, I expect their website will reflect it shortly. If it doesn't, then I'm still suspicious.....
Ever skeptical,

What May 8th announcement?
I think hes referring to the Fake Zinc conversation. FZ said that there was an announcement to be made on or around the movie launch. whether that is true or not anymore though remains to be seen.

I knew about the fake one ... but now that you mention it, I had forgotten that Craig said something about watching STO around movie time.

Im pretty sure the fake conversation had something about a May 8th announcement ... because i read it before it was a known fake. I started texting my friends about it and I didnt find out until the next day it wasnt a true Cryptic interview.
Who ever is responsible for doing that should be caught and assimilated ... and then vaporized.

I really hope the success or failure (not trying to jinx it here) has little or nothing to do with STO. If CO tanks(again, no jinx) does it take STO with it? Is Cryptic counting on the success of CO to support further developement of STO. I'm sure they are to some extent but I hope STO gets all the develpoment resources it deserves if CO is not received as warmly as they hope. (seroiusly, no jinxing).

What May 8th announcement?
I am speculating that something will come about with the release of the new Star Trek Movie (based on tweets and stuff). I suspect it will be Beta Apps.
maybe we can get our hands on the alien creator, to get a feeling for it, like w.wright did it with spore, and/or to fill their database with the results... or a few ingame videos... or the beta subscription form... who knows..

IMO any date for CO should have little to nothin to do with either the release of STO or the release of info on STO.
As they are two entirely different games with two different Dev teams.
That being said my opinion has been wrong before and I believe that this thread could use a little Dev input in order to curtail and fears or rumors generated either accedentaly or intentinonaly by this thread.:)

As Amazon has the release date for January, 2010, I excitedly hold my breath in anticipation of Pre-Order bonus and Collector's Edition announcements.

I agree with you too Draco. Maybe now with Champions if the release dat of July 14th is 100% correct and i'm not disputing that, then Champions development must be in final stages and whinding down. So If the date is true, and people have said they need 6 weeks before release to go Gold and to start distribution etc, not sure if that's correct, need someone to clarify. Which would mean end May possibly our around then to go Gold.
So with that in mind do you think, they will start to bring Dev's over from Champions onto STO?
Also i think we should not all start rumours and Chinese whispers so to speak. But what i think might be a kind of good thing is, as STO is using the exact same engine for Champions and this is theory, will also be using same sever technology for Beta Etc. Then would it mean the same process for STO might be a little smoother maybe, as they've gone through it all with Champions now. I know that each Game is different but at the core is the same so who knows, i'm not to worried, I think STO is still on track, but that's just me though.

I think it means that STO is closer, but that is also a given with each day that passes. With Champions on Line launching it just means that the development side of the house may have one less imminent game launch to worry about. But whether this means that the CO team will help the STO team get the game done sooner or not who knows.

For City of Heroes, there were changes in the program up to the end of Beta. It's been a while since I was in Closed/Open Beta for that game, but there was some time between end of Beta and the 4-Day Headstart.
When the game launched, there was quite a few bug fixes and tweaks that the Devs would have wanted to put into the game when it went Gold, but thanks to it being an MMO, it wasn't such a big deal. :)
When CoV was being developed, the intention was to have two separate Dev teams for CoH and CoV. But it was hard to convince NCSoft that the two deserved separate teams, since the publisher was thinking of reducing the financing for the CoX projects. In their eyes, CoV was merely an expansion, so there was no need to keep the separate Dev team.
For CO/STO, Cryptic has more say in having two separate teams (and a third one for the other one they have that they have under wraps) for the two games. With financing from Atari, there's more leeway to keep the two teams separate (as in less need for sharing people and resources). That doesn't mean they can't help each other and all that.
As CO heads towards launch, I wouldn't doubt the PR 'machine' will ratchet it up for that game, but that doesn't mean that things will go quiet for STO. There will still be a need for info on the game to keep up interest.
Will the movie help with STO's appeal? I wouldn't doubt it (as long as the movie doesn't bomb:eek:), but it shouldn't depend on the success of the movie.
