Hi everyone, Draco again with another question for everone.
As we have been told there will be a dozen or so ship classes(and no I dont remeber where I read it)
but im almost sure it was Zinc.
anyway... what dozen or so Fed starship classes would you like/expect to see in the game? (Outside of any of the new classes ie. Oslo,Excalibur, ect.) :)

NX-91101 (Don't know what class it is)
Intrepid
Defiant
Akira
Galaxy
Oslo
That's all I can think of and all I look forward to seeing. Although I am sure they will release some more new ones that I might get excited to see.

Every ship seen from TNG on should be in the game even if they are not playable right as the start. Its known that in Trek they do not just drop ships for no reason, i mean they have been using the excelsior class for damn near 80 years or so. so that just shows that they should have everything that was created from TNG and on.

Operation Iraqi Freedom Class. (Yes, that war is still going on in STO. Those people STILL hate us. And it explains why there are no Arabs in Star Trek too).

I agree that there should be pretty much every ship design from as far back as TNG. I mean as long as I can get my Akira ill be happy. Ilm still going to want to try out most ships though and having the most amount of possible types of ships will give the game that much more playability and ST feel.

I still don't full understand how classes are going to work.
It seems that we won't even have traditional ship classes, and instead will be given customizable ship templates,to which we could recreate a previous design.
(unless of course I read the Ask Cryptic on the topic the wrong way,and I hope I did because I'm not too keen on the lack of true ship classes)

I think there will be classes but within those classes you will be able to modify certain aspects of your ship to make it unique or possibly function differently.

Yea my friend itseems to meyou read it wrong.
From my understanding youwill be given a true ship class and then will be alowed to modify its parts, but will never truely be alowed deviate from the basics of that class. ie. a miranda will always be a miranda, it may just have newer parts like nacels or pylons. I refer you to Screenshot #15 .

I'm hoping to see the Achilles class starships that were shown in a few of the Star Trek video games. Most notably from Star Trek: Bridge Commander and a DS9 game which the full name escapes me.

It was said in the chat with IGN (The Voon chat? Is that was it was called??) that there would be a dozen configurations, and it was not specified whether this was per faction, or total.
In one of the Ask Cryptics it is elaborated that configuration refers to the general "silhouette" of the ship, such that ships like the Centaur and Miranda belong to the same configuration.
Class and Configuration do not appear to be synonymous. Things like "Miranda" and "Galaxy" are classes not configurations (though Craig did refer to the starting configuration as the "Miranda configuration"). Configurations will probably (and this is just my guess) dictate customization, such that you might be able to switch out a Miranda class primary hull for a Centaur class' (or the primary hull of another ship in the same configuration), but you will not be able to switch out a Miranda class primary hull for that of a Galaxy, since the Galaxy is in another configuration.
EDIT: From the February 19, 2009 Ask Cryptic
For instance, you may start out in a light cruiser. In this configuration, you will find ships like the Miranda class and the Centaur class. Both these ships have a prominent saucer section, and two nacelles that hang below the saucer. Both these classes have a similar configuration that is nothing like, say, a Galaxy class, Defiant or Nebula class ship.
EDIT 2: Similarly, I think it's a reasonable to assume that the Zephyr, Akira, and Oslo all occupy the same configuration, both due to the fact that the already revealed Akira and Oslo have a very similar structure, and because the Ship of the Line entry for the Oslo says that these three ships will be heavily modular and share components. The Defiant, Steamrunner, and Saber may then occupy a third configuration as these three have the common trait of having their nacelles built directly into their hulls, and while they don't look a lot alike, they still look more alike than they do to any other canon ship IMO, and unless Cryptic comes up with original designs to occupy the same configuration, I don't know where they'll be placed.

Wow, BreachAndClear, I have to say thats a pretty good deduction of the Configuration Vs Class. It makes a lot of sense, the logic is there, and its practical. I hope you are right, because it would be a little dull to only have 12 ship classes per faction.

Star Trek: Dominion War
Saber, Galaxy, Donut Ship, Miranda, NX-91001, Akira, Oslo have all been seen in screenshots/footage/ship-of-the-line things, and I'm really hoping that the Steamrunner is in the game (a personal favorite). As for Klingon classes, nobody cares about those anyway

I care, though i like small, fast, hard hitting ships instead of tanks.

I think more people would appreciate the Klingon ships if they didn't have so many different variations of the exact same design... The Bird of Prey (B'rel, K'Vort, D-11 & D-12 Scout ships). But looking at the 2380 edition of the Starship Recognition Manual (SRM) for the Klingon Defense Force, there really isn't that much variety of ships to choose from:
Negh'Var (Dreadnaught)
K'Vort (Battleship)
Vor'Cha (Attack Cruiser)
B'rel (Cruiser)
K'tinga (Heavy Cruiser)
Klolode (Heavy Cruiser)
Bird of Prey (D11/12 Scout Ship)
And then the Raptor from Ships of the Line. So that gives 9 ships to the Klingon Defense Force so far (maybe?) The 2380 SRM has 1 book in total for KDF, but the 2377-2378 SRM for Starfleet has 3 different books to cover Starfleet ships "still in service" so of course people will be more biased towards those.
As for a dozen Starfleet ships I hope to see (not including the Ships of the Line ones):
Nebula
Akira
Galaxy Mk II
Entente (Galaxy Refit)
Intrepid
Prometheus (Not sure how MVA would work but still a cool ship)
Sovereign
Nottingham
Norway
Achilles (even though it's a non-canon ship)
New Orleans
Sullivan
Steamrunner
Saber
Nova
Defiant
More than a dozen, but w/e.

I havetosay that this makes a great deal of sense and I would prefer that it be this way as to the way I understood it. thanks for your point of view it was inlightening.

Seriously, I hope they do too. I cant remember the name of the larger version now, but its a MUST to include in the game. You could have a lower tier BoP and a higher tier. That would be fantastic. Thanks for mentioning that.

The K'vort class cruiser is what you're looking for I believe.
It is, and it is no "battleship" like someone else mentioned!

Just quoting the technical manuals. Blame the writers.
starting to go a bit off topic from the OP here but since we're on the subject here's an article about the different size BoPs i read yesterday, i found it interesting, a lot of people here probably already know about it

I want the Nova class...could that be the mystery "shovelhead" (http://uploads.startrekonline.com/sto_screen12_0.jpg) ship from the gameplay trailer? the pic on memory alpha (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Nova_class) looks similar

It does have some features that resemble a Nova class however the nacelles seem to be positioned "downwards"! Interesting had not noticed it before thank you!
Perhaps it is a modified Nova?

The 'shovelhead' looks more like a heavily customized Galaxy class if you look at the neck and secondary hull. The Nova doesn't have a neck at all.
