I think it would be funny if instead of putting out a beta sign up list 'and a billion folks that never even
posted here sign up on it' you just secretly pick the beta day, then message ALL current forums
posters with a beta key....THEN if there is room left, have a sign up for the non-forum folks.
I think it makes sense, you want testers that will find bugs, and report...who is most likely
to do that? Folks that just sign on a list hoping for a quick sneak peek, or some free gaming?
Or
Folks that really care about the ip and the game, enuff to come here regularly and discuss, suggest ect..

How about...no. Your idea basicly equates posting here with "deserving" to play beta, but that idea is flawed. Just because people dont post on the forums doesnt mean they dont read them. And even if someone doesnt read the forums YET, that has no impact on how welll they would be able to beta test. The STO beta is going to work the same way as the Champions beta: once the Devs are ready to beta test they will allow people to apply from the main website, and they will choose applicants based on whatever their standards are.

Forgive me oh everlasting know it all,but...
When asked about Beta test slots Cryptic has said that they will pull from the forum community fist as they ALLWAYS have.
For proof i refer you to Awens "so you wanna be a beta tester" sticky.:p
not saying you have to post just saying you have to be a forum member thats all

This is pretty much how SWG picked testers when they revamped jedi (the first time). Every player that logged into their test server during a certain period got invited. The first time the players heard about it was when the invites went out.

I seem to remember them saying that if you wanted to be involved with the Beta, you would need to at least become a member of the community. Posting in the forums is not needed. But membership is.

Well i'm certain that there is in fact a large population of gamers that will often wait for beta testing just to play something new. I've heard and read about it before and those types of people are far less likely to actually be productive in a testing envrionment.

Flawed.
There are probably close to 82,000 member accounts on this forum. Too many to just give them all beta keys. Unless it's a beta stress test.

There really only seem to be 6.5k active ones, though. Like really active. :P

I'm biased.
I like the idea.
Some folks even if they have loved or hated what has been going on with this development, they have been following STO every single day since or before 2004.
I don't know how you validate that for people...but those are the folks who would treat it very much like their own baby too.
You know who you are.
Good luck.

What a chlidish post....plz refrain from such postings in the future. I'm sure the company has a method for selecting who they want to invite and who they don't. Flaming the forums is just not right.

It would be difficult for them to invite you to their beta test if you don't register anywhere :)

I would imagine that they have already started compiling a list based on the Forum members.

Something I'd like to add to this discussion, for whatever its worth, is that there are some FIRST DAY forum members who have been with Champions since the beginning and are still there now that have not been invited to Beta, even though they applied.

Probably based upon space, as well as not meeting other criteria. Beta is never a guarantee. Sometimes there are things that simply prevent you from selection.

Oh, I understand. The real determination is the things you selected(computer specs, etc) when you created your account. Not WHEN you created it. I just wanted to throw that out there for the people who think simply being registered is all that it takes :o

As long as I'm in Beta, I don't care how they pick.

I would say that is not entirely accurate either. 'When' you created your account, could be a determining factor as well. It could simply be one of the many factors they consider when making selection, so I would say it is incorrect to say that it is not a 'real factor' in determination.
Beta selection is not a guarentee (unless you are awarded it early), but the more positive actions you take, may help your chances. Selection may simply come down between you and someone with the exact same criteria, with only an earlier forum registration being the determining factor.

I just hope they get a good pool of testers that help hammer down the bugs and issues for a good launch.
