I did a search and could not pull up any info on this.

Was wondering how this will work in the game, With whats been talked about for combat so far in space will you be able to target a primary targets and then secondary and so on or will we need to toggle targets like they do in other MMOs?

Or will you deal with multiple ship targeting based on bridge crew/system quality and/or AOE types of effects. (ex) I want to fire a spread of Photon Torpedoes, do they target multiple ships with a spread or would you get a graphic target icon and shoot the AOE where you drop the icon?

The best rumor I have heard was that it was very Bridge Commander-esque.

Positional combat

B.C. had some fantastic sub-system targeting!!

If it is like that at all... ...wow.

I recall seeing in episodes ships firing multiple phaser shots from different arrays at several targets. I may be mistaken, but if you have multiple arrays does it not make sense to do this. I mean a battleship never aimed all it's guns at the same target at once.

From what has been going around it's going to be like Kinneas said. I personally am really hoping for something like that. It allows you to set up some really good strategies with friends. You attack from the rear and target their weapons systems the enemy focuses their shields on that side and your friends jump out and start attacking from the front.

Depends if you have the luxury/energy to do so?

IMO concentrating your fire as much as possible in the same spot, & scoring internals as fast as possible is very important. One should rotate to fire all arcs into the same spot of your opponent when possible.

Every point of energy usually matters and dividing up your power over several targets 'could' be bad.

Again. Unless you are UBER.

but if you wanted to draw a group of enemies off it could be effective. Or if the ships were of a smaller class such as three destroyer on a dreadnought, the multiple targeting could give the capability to disable the three ships more rapidly than engaging one at a time.

This is a good question. I could see some kind of screen that shows all possible targets. Within that list there is a set of targets that is in range (everything out of range is greyed out) and it might show special symbols on certain targets to show importance to or soemthing. From that list of targets in range you could select, depending on the level of your targeting system, a qeue for targets that you want your ship to attack first.

forgive the lack of any sort of visual here but i think you will get the idea.

1. enemy ship A (queu 1)
2. enemy ship B (queu 2)
3. enemy sentry drone A (queu 4)
4. enemy ship C (queu 3)
5. enemy sentry drone B (out of range)
6. enemy sentry drone D (out of range)
7. enemy ship D (out of range)
8. enemy sentry drone C (out of range)

So for instance... the targeting system assessed these 8 targets.
4 are in range
3 are high threat targets and 1 low threat target (and i queu targets for attack based on that priority.
4 are out of range.

Thats my idea. Feel free to criticize.

in one of dev posts i saw that they want to makepossible firing at multiple ships during pass and maneuvering

I would think to fit with how the series and movies feel there wouldn't be an expressed "target" function in the game like in WoW or EVE etc...

They've stated that ship combat will be tactical and I would assume you would choose your target for each weapon fire/burst as you used those abilities, perhaps with a main target selected for tactical purposes such as directing shields...

If you've played Starfleet command you will have a pretty good idea of the space combat

I think a system of 'Priority selection and ranking' like Thundurr mentions would be able to help facilitate that.

Ideally, I would like to automate most of it, so I am not having to try to navigate the ship, and tell each weapons bank what to target -- basically having a number of attack/targeting patterns hotkeyed.

I do like the idea of having multiple targets with different priorities, it takes some of the burden of tracking ships away while allowing for a lot of tactical control. For big firefights, this would be very useful. I don't know the exact method of implementation, but the concept is one I would like to see.
