View Full Version : POLL: Engineering, Science, or Tactical?

It has now been confirmed (http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/66095) that there will be 3 major career paths in STO:

With the major careers in the game being Engineering, Science and Tactical, you could say, “Oh man, there’s only 3 classes in the game, how boring is that?” But we’ve purposefully made them really, really wide in how they function. So within those classes, or within your career choices there’s so much that you can explore. The player can say, “Look, I’m really going to try to learn these skills or really try to push myself in this direction and maybe it’ll work or maybe it won’t. If it doesn’t I’ll just go learn these skills now and play this today.”

That said,

Which major career path will you take in STO? (http://www.polldaddy.com/p/1526762/)

While I love all these categories as they are portrayed in the ST universe....I voted science to comport with my real life profession.

I voted Science. Why? Well, obviously I can improve my own ships with engineering! I can fight better with tactical! Nobody has the slightest idea what Science will do so, of course, following my own axiom of "The unknown is always more interesting than the known" I had no choice.

Well, also I think it may lend itself to more investigatory and interesting gameplay. Whether I want to be a diplomat (sociology/xenopsychology) or a anthropologist or doctor, this will be the line that has the most flexibility for problem solving outside the usual dotted lines of MMOs.

Then again, I'd be lying if I didn't consider both Tactical and Engineering as potentially interesting too. Tactical would probably be my second choice as I suspect Engineering will be the "crafting" class and crafting (at least so far in the games I've played) hasn't really engaged me. I tend to like and hang out with crafters and entertainers more than other fighting classes/players as I gravitate to the role of combatant "protector" for noncombatants and enjoy that role in games where that's an option. In Eve you'd often find me escorting miners in low sec or helping entertainers through quests or collection content in SWG.

But Science is a mystery. What will it be? What will it do?

At the moment, Tactical just leads Science for me. However, I'll wait and see what options there are within them before a final decision. I voted Tactical for now.

Problem is i am usually roleplaying myself in any game and/or setting!

Eventhough i look forward to commanding a science vessel one day, i myself am no scientist nor an engineer so the closest thing to real life would be the tactical path!

Still i am hoping there will be more choices upon launch...

my main will be Science
then ill have an alt for engineering and tactical

We're going for Science!

Exploration and scientific discovery is something that is very passionate to our family. So we will definatly become part of the Science tree.

i am either going engineering or tactical. depends on what each can do. i will most likely make the final decision based on two things; Beta experience (if any) and the ability to make multiple federation characters.

Science and exploration always felt to me to be at the core of what Star Trek was about. I'd have to go science.

Science and exploration always felt to me to be at the core of what Star Trek was about. I'd have to go science.

Fortunately you can do what you want, remember James T. Kirk was no scientist but his ungoing mission could be seen as such: exploration, scientific research and diplomacy!

So all in all i doubt it matters much what path one takes...still i am looking forward to "fly" a science vessel myself eventhough i will not take the science path myself!

These poll things are cool, however, it kinda sucks that they do not make an official one. Maybe they are saving it for the near release dates... Anyways, I wonder what career paths are available for Klingons. Warrior... Warrior... maybe another Warrior... Maybe they will change it so that there is a class for attack, defense and scouting... Who knows...

Don't forget the Klingons need the same brances as we do, who else would keep those ships flying and so on?! :D

Voting blind, as others have said, means we're just guessing -- but I know Exploration will be my big thing, so I picked Science, for now.

Still, all three areas offer a wealth of possibilities. I reserve the right to change my mind later! ;)

Cheers,

KOS

Not to be difficult, but to try to answer the question honestly, "all of the above" would be my choice. I'm a generalist.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
--Robert A. Heinlein, Time Enough for Love

If "all of the above" isn't an option, then next best would be Science + Tactical (i.e., Exploration) for one character, and Engineering for another because I'm assuming that STO's designers are planning to define "crafting" content as gameplay that's exclusive to Engineers.

And if even that's not an option? Sigh. In that case, Science, I guess, if it's designed to be about exploring complex systems.

It's still way too early to know. Where's some hard info on character skills?

Don't forget the Klingons need the same brances as we do, who else would keep those ships flying and so on?! :D

I expect the same three branches exist in the Klingon Alliance (Kang's wife, Mara, from "Day of the Dove" was also his Science Officer, for example).

All Klingons serving in space are Warriors by cultural dictate, but I expect there will be different job-related skill sets -- which is what the three branches ultimately represent.

As you say, the Alliance needs all kinds of skill sets to keep the fleet functional!

Cheers,

KOS

Wow, someone who knows less about Star Trek than me :D

Well I never considered myself a ST genius or anything...and am willing to bet many know more than I, but that does not mean what I said was wrong. It is true in the real world as well as in ST. All MDs are scientists first and foremost. However, it is not that I misunderstood that poster....just that technically medical can fall under science. In real life I am a mathematician, but scientists is the closest thing I can associate to.

I think your career path won't affect what content you see as much as your faction choice. Whether or not you are Starfleet or Klingon. So I don't see too awfully much, there may be some specific career missions that really take your role into play, but we really want to make it so that no matter what career you choose or no matter what role you want to play with in the game that you can still experience the content that, you know, maybe your friend who is going the tactical route saw and thinks is really really cool too.

Heh, careers are stat buffs alterations, not really affecting gameplay :(

Tactical. Should be the strongest in combat situations and so the most difficult target for player killers and griefers. Additionally Worf is my favourite character and I always experimented with tactics in "Starfleet Academy".:D

True enough so basicly there is no one way is best or limited for that matter! You still get to be that captain you've always wanted to be no matter what path you choose!

Still looking to command a science vessel and explore which will be my main focus in STO, even with a tactical background...

Though I am more Tactically, interested, I also would be interested in playing with the 'weakness' of a non-tactical line, using the 'advantages/Opportunities' it might present.

What I choose is really going to come down to what each line has, I'm not really set in stone on how I want to play but seeing as how everyone will probably go tactical I was thinking science, but if science doesn't offer something "cool" in the way of battle abilites then I'm not going to bother. Thinking of that, what does everyone think each profession will be getting in terms of abilities and the such.

jbarker82

I always thought that if I was able to have a job on a starship that I would be the helmsman. I liked the thought of actually being the one piloting the ship. As that doesn't seem possible, i'm going to go with engineering as being able to craft, upgrade and repair things seems a pretty interesting route. I might add on a few tactical abilities too and be sortof a Miles O'Brien character.

I also choose tactical, because I was always a fighter not a diplomat. Well lets say, 70% fighter 30% diplomat. I think I am more like Commander Riker.
