I'm not much of a poster. I keep my ear to the ground and my eyes on the websites. I want to play a great MMO.
That said, there are three that really intrigue me: DC Universe Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and, of course, Star Trek Online. Unfortunately, I'm a very busy man. I am a firefighter, a husband, and a soon-to-be father. Money doesn't grow on trees, either, and I won't have the funds to support all three. So how will I choose? DCUO is an exciting concept, but I feel that it may just become a mmof (massive multiplayer online fighter), and I have little interest in playing one of those. That leaves SWTOR and STO. Both offer an immersive and interesting property. Both are being developed by excellent companies. I have a few friends from SWG that will play SWTOR. I have old friends that are huge Star Wars fans and big KOTOR fans that will play SWTOR. So what do I want?
I want to play STO. The devs are approachable, the forums are full of people with passion, but are not COMPLETELY judgemental, and (most important) the game looks like it will create an amazing Star Trek experience. It wasn't always easy. Cryptic started this daunting process by purchasing the rights to a partially made game. They made the controversial choice to start from scratch. Next, they had to decide what era to create the game in, a choice that would surely alienate some fans. Then they had to fight the player-crew verse np-crew fight, the most heated argument, IMHO, to date. Through it all, you listened to the fans, kept us informed, and went hard with the decisions made. Just wanted Cryptic to know that you are winning at least one person over, winning the battle of 'space mmo' supremacy with at least one man. Keep up the great work, ladies and gents!
P.S. I'm working on those SWTOR guys, and a couple may be starting to crack...

Don't forget the more recent controverspy, the lack of player ship interiors for free-roaming and social purposes.

jakeeyes,
I totaly understand wanted to play with friends you already have. I plan to suck some of my Eve friends to come here to ST:O to play. But, I also feel that new environment brings new friends. So I wouludn't focus on the friends you would "lose" by going ST:O think of all the friends you could gain!

If you keep bring this up someone may mistake you for Warrior41 or aka Sameet that is his pet harping issue lately. Which he picked up sense he has delcared the graphics issue "fixed".

I'm not exactly the shy and retiring type so I tend to share my displeasure or concerns more than kudos but I'm ultimately with jakeeyes. Cryptic's put forward some very intriguing ideas about the kind of PvE gameplay we'll be seeing and that's primarily why I'm here. Those ideas, procedurally generated missions and IPvP, could well be close to what I've been hoping MMOs would ultimately latch onto. Man, it's been a long wait and depending on how things actually go it could still be a long wait.
I'm also delighted with how they seem to be implementing NPC crews.
I didn't come here as a Trekker, no that's something I'm learning as I go, but as a gamer and a serious gamer who spends perhaps too much time thinking about the nature of immersive gameplay as both a roleplayer and a simmer (lite). MMOs have tried some interesting things in the past but none have quite the potential STO does for dynamic, immersive, PvE gameplay. And that's the biggest hurdle MMOs face. They've figured out immersive PvP (Eve Online is the paragon but the LoTRO approach works in its own way) and immersive economies (Eve again but also early SWG) and roleplaying elements (SWG still reigns here for all its other warts) and non-interactive evocations of setting (LoTRO creates a wonderful backdrop).
But the actual day-to-day stuff we do in MMOs has never felt very believable (aside from early SWG for crafting and resource gathering but that really didn't do the setting any favors). Maybe with STO we'll see nonrepetitive PvE content that does fit in with what we know of the setting?
I hope. There's more I want but I won't get into that here. Cryptic's at least said the right things about some stuff that's important to me and that's more than I usually run across. It's why I'm here. It's why I care.
It's also why I can be a pain in the arse at times too. :D
But, yeah, for the most part Cryptic has my confidence and my hopes. As a jaded gamer I'm always braced to be disappointed but I find being hopeful is generally more fun.

Excuse you, I'm completely judgemental, (or is it just mental?) don't categorize me with these open-minded wimps!
Oh, and not only is STO the better game....we have tacos.

Well said. I don't usually say nice things about developers due to past experience with douchbags like SOE, but Cryptic seems to be open and honest. That is a very big rarity for companies nowadays.

But there are ship, star base and structure interiors for missions/quests/etc. so no real worries here.

Very well put, and a great way of looking at it. Even my wife has said "hun, you already made up your mind, put it on the christmas list". Your point may have driven it home.

Furthermore, I have always loved the "battleship" strategy involved with Star Trek ship combat games. Layer into that the customization of both ship and crew and the added strategy of having PC fleets, and we have ourselves a winner!

I imagine you will have plenty of friends before the game starts, most people are in a fleet already or are active on the forums and seem to be building up an understanding for one another and try to respect each other witch i see as a strong foundation for a potential online friendschip to grow on :)

I know this is my most anticipated MMO. Like the OP, I have a few that I'm watching, but I haunt these boards and not those because I think this is the best game and the best community (I include the devs in there as they are active in the community too).
I want to play a great MMO...
From the "looks" of it STO may become just that, and welcome by the way! :)

I've been on these forums longer than any other. This community has been great from the beginning. It inherited the awesome guys from the STO forum when Perpetual was trying to make it. And more awesome people joined as Cryptic released info. From there the community as a whole, including the Dev's, have grown stronger and closer with each battle with each other.
Keep up the good work Cryptic. Live long, and prosper.
P.S. The SWTOR forum isn't worth ****

There's a reason why this site is better than TOR. This site actually MODERATES its forums. Trolling and spamming isn't allowed and when people do it too much they get banned. They still haven't been able to IP trace the alts created by banned members and I'm 99% sure of which ones those are since they are stupid enough to complain on MMORPG.COM about their threads being closed. Overall, douchebags are well filtered out and this is a good place to have deep discussions about game mechanics. Definetly the most mature gaming forum around.
Not so on TOR. Those forums are plagued by trolls and spammers from MMORPG.COM and SWG who spam the same garbage day in and day out. It's a lot of folks arguing with people who want Bioware to make SWG2 even though the devs said it is a linear game and not sandbox. That game is turning into a community of players that I don't ever want to associate with. But what do you expect when bad behavior is tolerated on a forum?

You keep up the good work sir, and by good work, I mean life saving work, and of course converting those Star Wars guys. I love a good game like then next person and KOTOR was one of the best, but Star Trek has been a cornerstone of my entertainment and moral upbringing. Star Wars is all well and good with its Western Philosophical explorations, but Star Trek explores all the moral and philosophical grounds and does not preach to the people, but rather lay out examples of different ideals at work and lets the fans decide what they want to take away from it all.
Wow... just wanted to say Hell Yeah! and instead went into a rant... damn english major college education.

Well said. I like Star Wars too and they were always fun movies to watch. But Star Trek for me was where you went once you grew up and moved past simple stories with cool explosians.
