View Full Version : Could we possibly get an animated timeline?

Star Wars: The Old Republic just released their first timeline, and as you can see (http://swtor.com/info/timeline/timeline1), it is animated. Obviously Cryptic has some great artists on staff, and IMHO it would be very cool to see something like this detailing the events that have been described thus far in the "Path to 2409" updates. Thoughts?

Wow that's a great little extra thing to do for the community. Cryptic does have some great artists and I would love if they had the resources to do something like that here. That being said, I don't want something like that to take people away from actual game development.
Count me in the "I'd love to see this" column.

I agree. Though I love what Cryptic has been giving us this far. I think they should take things to the next level as SWTOR is going to provide some pretty stiff competition. An animated timeline would be great to make selections from to read the timeline updates.

Hmm nifty flash timelines are nice but seeing that makes me think their dev team have way too much time on their hands...(time that could be used coding and testing).

How could someone complain about a Dev team having too much time? If the STO Devs had more time and resources we could get stuff like that! You're insulting a GOOD thing...

No thats time that wouldve been spent on a Better thing: In game content. :D *nodds*

That narrators voice is fantastic, fits perfectly with a story like that.

I would want something more 'Star Trek', like an LCARS computer display with a computer voice reading the Path story.
However, you are talking about hiring a voice actor, studio time, website work, etc, which I can see as being cost/resource prohibitive. We might see some more stuff once Champions gets launched -- and hopefully does well.

I just don't know what to do y'know? I know I shouldn't really play both due the life sapping amount of time that would take, but right now I can't pick from them. I'm definately going to try them both and see from there, meh, I don't know what I'll do.

I doubt they had the same people that code the game make that flash... LucasArts and Bioware have whole teams just for their web content.

The narrators voice doesn't surprise me since it sounds like one of the voices from Mass Effect.

Bleh, I just keep getting more and more interested in this Old Republic MMO. KOTOR was an amazing AAA title. KOTOR II is probably why I'm unsure since it was rushed and didn't have it's real ending (they couldn't complete it in time so they skipped a bunch of story). If this MMO's story is as good as KOTOR's I think I'll be in.

Well if Cryptic/Atari has a seperate team with sufficient funds then I'm all for it but at the moment is not critical. Our web content team is doing good with constant Ask Cryptics, multiple Ships of the line and 5 timeline updates done and 18 more years to go.

I think it's Lance Henriksen, atleast it sounds very much like him.
I reckon cryptic should one up them and do the timeline using using the game engine. It'd be a double whammy of showing off the game while informing everyone of the events leading up to 2409.

I think it would be very cool, but maybe you would be asking to much to the devs.

If Cryptic did it, wouldn't that be a bit...derivative?

Agree with Cormoran, a new video showing the in-game engine depicting a major timeline event would be sweet. It doesn't even have to be from the timeline, just more videos works! :D

They could even hire some of the shows actors to do the narration. Have patrick stewart in for one, shatner for another and so on. that bit's more wishful thinking though. :o

It is indeed Lance Henriksen, who was the voice of the...general/fleet guy(sorry been a while since I have played ME) that you only spoke to over the radio in Mass Effect.

this brings up the off-topic point - is anyone else torn between the fact that both mmo's seem to be great and can't decide which one he'll end up on :P

I think the animated history on SWTOR is pretty cool, but I find contests with garunteed beta slots alot cooler.

You're lucky, I'm not just a Trekkie and Star Wars fan, I'm also a huge Superman fan who really likes the look of Champions. I'm giving up on real life until it gets better graphics.

You know, one thing they should actually do is put up a stardate clock, since it seems they are aiming at having Star Trek Online being exactly 400 years in the future from today, then all they would need to do is just write the HTML out to taking today's date and putting it 400 years in the future. Basically, instead of March 29th, 2009 it would be set as March 29th, 2409 which would roughly be Stardate 86240.34. Actually got one of the people on my site working on a clock like that :D
