Face capturing program or something.

Unlikely to happen since that requires uploading imagery, furthermore too easily exploitable.

Not to mention, my mug breaks camera's. I'd hate to see what it would do to your monitor. Best to let the graphics stay in game and us to stay annonomous (that don't look right so probably misspelled)

No.
People would simply take pictures of their unseen parts.

A sufficiently-customisable setup can let you use sliders to tweak position, angle, and size of various facial features (eyes, nose, cheeks, jawline, mouth and lips, brows, ears, etc, etc) to very closely approximate the structure of your own face. With a wide enough variety of hairstyles (including beards and moustaches), and a fine-tunable color palette, you can match everything down to skin-tone.
Heck, even just in Saint's Row (both 1 and 2), I can come up with a surprisingly-close approximation of my own face and build. :)

I've played Rainbow Six Vegas, which has this feature, and I've got to say, once the image of a person's face gets stretched out to fit the model, it looks HORRIBLE, and they aren't recognizable.

Impossible with the current model and texture usage.
Back in the days of Quake 3 where model textures were pasted images, yeah, you could do it easy. But Crytpic is using fully modeled faces with customizable vertex points to allow manipulation of various points, texture overlay, and direct mesh skin tone.
Essentially, they don't paste a picture of a face, they build the face.

Yes, I'd much rather use the creator to come up with a reasonable copy of my battered green mug then to paste a photo to it. That always looks wrong.

Yeah.........................that would go pretty badly with the little kids that will be playing this game. On the other hand, having a goat head as my head would be interesting! Nnaaaaaa Ba Baaa Nnaaaaa :D

I'm ugly. No please. I'd rather have the ability to give my ship a custom paint job, even though it might not fit. Like a a red stripe around the saucer section or an angel on the hull. :D

I'm not in favor of the proposal in the opening post. This is a game, forget the realism. That's my two cents.

You know...it'd be alright if the program simply attempted to capture the distinctiveness of that person's face and then duplicate it in it's 3d face tweaking abilities. That'd work and be much more logical than simply skinning the face with the image of your choice. Still, I don't think that'd happen :)...

I would. But we have enough problems recognizing faces. Actually recreating them in 3D generally requires expensive hardware like a light dome.

There have bene face editors in other games, mainly sports games that do the very same thing.
But no, it is unlikely for it to be in an MMO. There are far to many ppl that play the game, they would have to store thousands of pictures and then find a way, to sort and store them all. This would cause increased lag, because everytime you met a new person you would have to download the face for their picture and custom settings for their character.
Ever play Second Life. This game is laggy as heck in heavily customized areas because the thousands upon thousands of customized content that you have to download everytime you meet a person or area. The game is very innovative, but that innovation is the bane of it's crappy performance! And it's really not it's fault, because it is doing exactly what it was supossed to do. Provide a sandbox environment MMO for ppl to play in. It just doesn't make for a very fun game to play, with any fluid action in it :P
Anyway, MMO's are far better off to use content that is already installed by the user with client data, then use that data to manipulate a character likeness of yourself. With the amount of detail Cryptic is putting into character creation, I don't think it's to much of a stretch to think you could fashion a character that would look pretty darn close to what you look like in RL! And yet, it will still retain that artistic feel and look like it belongs in the game. Rather than somebody having the picture they took look to dark, or the lighting look all wrong on their face.
Custom content is fine in the game, if it can be built and used from pre-existing data that is installed on everybodies computer. But custom content requires either pictures to be loaded up to the server then downloaded by you, or pulled from the user, then transfered directly to you. This opens up all kinds of issues on lag, and possibly ppl running around with no face at all, because their connection timed-out to you and you didn't get their face! LOL

I suppose they could do this, like they do in EvE. Give you an elaborate 3D model that you manipulate in character creation. Then capture a picture of that avatar and the picture is what represents you in game! lol
Or they could use the High Polygon model and make a normal map from it, and the face gets sculpted into a low poly model. Then the normal map gets applied to it.

I don't think that's a good idea. It wouldn't be easy to make, it would require player custom made downloads and even if people wouldn't show their unseen parts, it would be ugly as hell.

as said before, good customization options in the facial editor can allow you to create a good likeness of yourself without needing to upload anything. It's not really that hard, i can even manage to make a Mii that looks like me (well, a basic cartoony bobble-headed version of me anyways)

Have to agree with you on this, I look at Miis that are created by other ppl, and out of all the Mii's there are a few that stand out, that I will say. Hey, thats Mr. T, Beavis and Butthead, Jack Black, Madonna, etc...
I consider the Mii editor pretty limited, but it is diverse enough to make some very startling liknesses, that you can instantly identify with. One can only hope that the character creator is diverse enough to make all kinds of characters, including different races of humans, like asian, indian, german, african etc...

On a similar note to my last post...
I will take a picture of my butt. I will upload it as a face. This will be a new custom Star Trek race of butt faces! The enemy will be defeated just by looking at me in their view screen.
Face capturing program or something.
They will not do this but you could take the time to make your toon look like you. But if you got a stalker in the game they would not have a problem finding you if they know what you look like.

Haha nice. While that would be cool I envision many 'funny' people have ***** faced toons.
To be fair the character creation is so complex that you could create your own face anyway by the looks of things.
**EDIT: What?!?!? It bleeped out the scientific word for a male's reproductive organ??? lol that's ridiculous.
