Hey, ok, so this isn't a recruiting thread and there might have been one about this before but.. I am very curious to see how many people are going to want to play as privateers/pirates. So far I haven't found many which is weird b/c most other scifi genred games have significant merc populations. If you're undecided on a faction (like me) or want to play as a minor race, post a reply.

You haven't found many because we've been told that there won't be any freelancer type career paths. Its Starfleet or Klingon Defence Force.

Of course the Orions are siding with the Klingons, so we may see some limited pirating with them. I really wish we had a third faction.... I guess we will wait for the inevitbale expansion.

Understandably. But I think the pirate concept can still be applied. There could be rogue Federation or rogue Klingon ships.. maybe some Romulans too. A lot of the renegade aspect we've been supplementing with RPing. I know that we are all going to have to play storyline Fed or Kling missions at some point but in contested areas I want to be able to excel. I'm a player that pvps alot in mmorpgs and I'm hoping for a pvp system that will allow raids and ambushes in contested space and some high-quality combat.. maybe it's a lost cause but I think we can make it work!

Yes, it COULD. But what you must understand is there are more people that want to play Romulans than Pirates. There are more people that want to play Cardassians than Pirates. There are more people that want to play Dominion than pirates. At launch, Federation and Klingon will be the only two factions. That means that there are at LEAST 3 other factions that would need to be added before they even think about adding a pirate faction. Realisticly speaking, that is several years away.

one of two things will happen if u try to step out of ur Starfleet or Klingon role to become a privateer.

1: u simply wont have the abillity to "go off the rails" as it were. for example u wont be able to fire on firendly ships.

or

2: u will instantly be pummelled by the nearest NPC for violating some behind the scenes rules/moral code

most games of this type (with strict factions) make it impossible to stray or have sever penalties.

Unfortunately it has been stated that privateering won't be at launch. I think it would be great, because I'd love to nab any federation defectors, and I love the idea of Player owned space (like in EvE). Perhaps at a later date, but not at launch.

And I wouldnt privateer, but I would go after those that do :-)

I don't get it. Four of the biggest ST characters were renegades (Q, Khan, Shinzu, Sybok) They filmed three whole movies (STII, STVI, STNem) where the whole theme was about rogues..how can this NOT be represented in some playable way in a game that claims to be ST? can you imagine how boring the series would have been if it was ONLY feds vs klings??

One of the biggest appeals for me in watching ST was that each episode had new characters (some good, some evil, some in-between) and it was never a cut and dry division of forces. Even in the dominion war there were new races coming in and choosing different sides, even changing sides!

Does this mean that the only ships we're going to see in game are going to be fed or kling??

In STO's time period, the Ferengi have joined the Federation. So there is a possibility that Federation players will have access to Ferengi ships, Vulcan, as well as other member races, in addition to the standard Federation ships. The Klingons have "absorbed" the Gorn, as well as the Orions and Nausicans(sp), so all of their ships will possibly be playable as well. On top of all of this, we will be able to customize our ship's design and appearance.

All games start somewhere as with STO, Federation or Klingon. I do hope other factions are added as the game becomes a success.

Really? Is that somewhere in the "Path to ... " features? Cause I haven't seen it mentioned that the Ferengi have joined the Federation.

There's a difference between being just in the game and being playable by the users.
The Borg are going to be in the game as well. We've been told there will not be PC Borg, at least not at launch, likely not ever.

I plan to be a privateer, but I want to form a band of merry men! :D

ok first, Sybok is nowhere near a BIG character in the trek universe. He was a villian for 1 movie. ?!?!?

Q, while he was the redheaded stepchild of the continum, he wasnt a freelancer or renegade. he was a "child" with the powers of a god, who enjoyed tormenting lower lifeforms to make him self giggle

I have no idea who Shinzu is, so i am assuming u are talking about Shinzon, and he was a revolutionary psychopathic mass murder, not a renegade or freelancer or privateer.

and lastly, Khan..... he is probably the closest thing to ur renegade/ privateer/pirate since he captured and used a stafleet starship for his revenge on Kirk.

the simple facts are the devs have decided (right or wrong) that this will not be a viable play style (at least for launch). So the closest you will come to this style of play would be as a Klingon, as they pretty much do what ever the hell they want, as a general rule of thumb. I imagine we ill see NPC character that fit ur "privateer/pirate/freelancer" label in the course of our adventures. But as of now this is not an available play style.

so u have two cjhoices, play the game as it is (and hope they add this function later) or dont play the game.

***** sorry i missed ur last question*********

if u play the fed faction u will be limited to Starfleet ships (in all likelyhood)

If u play klingon faction there may be some leeway as in general the ships of the klingon empire are more "family/house" owned (the oppisite of starfleet where the government owns the ship like a traditional military). we have seen a few orion ships and orians are part of the klingon faction, but we just arent sure if the orion ship we have seen are player ships or NPC ships.

i dont think that is correct, the devs have said we are in the KDF or Starfleet ..... if we were allowed to be civilianfederation players then i would agree we would be able to pilot ferengi, vulcan,andorian,etc... ships. but since we are only starfleet, i would say we only fly starfleet ships.

Klingon Defence Force is a little different. Where Starfleet is an arm of the government, the KDF is more like a malitia than a government military. most of the ships are owned by the families/houses, so it would make some sence to have the different race ships availbale to that faction. we have seen orian ships already (though it is still unclear as to their availablillity as Player ships or NPC ships)

I support the idea of faction-independence, even if it comes at some price. I will be faction-independent if the game allows it. I would probably hang around with the Federation Alliance more than with the Klingon Horde, much like Harry Mudd does. I just hope STO doesn't try to copy EVE or WoW.

I thin k that it would be fun to play as something like this but if they do not add it, It will not be a game killer for me so I will good ether way.

I think the biggest problem with adding a “Merc.” faction is creating a story line for them since one could technically perform missions for any faction. I would prefer they create the Romulan faction and leave the “Merc” faction as NPCs.

They would have there own set of missions just like the other Factions an it should not be set to a set of Races.

Yes I wouldn't worry too much that Mercs/Pirates won't be available upon release, many features can be added later via Patches/X-Packs. Also, it may be the devs., don't see a Pirate "faction" as fitting to their initial storyline/conent arch.

If you want to be a pirate, why don't you just go into low sec and wait for prey?

If this game is going to have piratical content, it will likely be written for races such as the Orions and Nausicaans. They will not be freelancers, however, since they will be aligned with the Klingons and against the Federation. I guess that would make them privateers, rather than strict pirates.
