Congratulations to Thehybrid and Coldsteel6d on winning the contest. This is a good move by Cryptic and I believe that most members of the community will greatly appreciate it.
From what I've seen in the comments above, if there's one thing we've shown it is that we can all be reasonable about something, as long as it is reasonable in itself. So I'm still hoping Cryptic will reconsider the lottery contest concept and just be a little bit more professional about things next time.
Personally, Coldsteel6d's story is my favourite. Turning around space flight capability and warp capability so drastically, that's incredibly creative.

1. The entry must be a response to the following description and the accompanying image on the Webpage:
Travelling the Universe on a starship, you’ve met a lot of different people from a lot of different planets. It’s rare for you to come across a new entity, but that’s a part of the thrill. So, when you strolled into the cantina at your latest docking station and saw an empty seat next to someone from a species you’d never seen before, you smiled, sat yourself down, and said, “So, where are you from? And can I buy you a drink?”
Your new friend may smile and accept the drink, or they may stand up in disgust because you’ve violated one of their cultural taboos, or they may throw their arms around you in glee because where they come from “can I buy you a drink” is a marriage proposal.
You tell us their answer. What planet are they from? What kind of culture did they grow up in? How did they end up here, sitting next to you in a space station cantina?
Introduce us.
That seems fairly clear, again, not trying to be a total d!ck, just find it curious.

It's important to note that a number of us take great exception to the events of this week. Attempts to gloss over those events are going to look obvious.
The perception is that there is a lot going on in this forum that violates basic laws of decency. Censoring discussion of the problem won't solve it, unless the goal is to drive away all but the most subservient of posters. Be honest - is that really the answer?
The threads pertaining to the contest controversy do not need to be open any longer. Our opinion was voiced in many ways and by many people. Since Cryptic has chosen a legitimate winner there is no longer a need for debate or discussion on the manner. Cryptic reserves the right (http://forums.startrekonline.com/announcement.php?f=24&a=2) (19 and 20) to moderate these forums in any way they see fit. I think they could have acted sooner on the situation, but in the end, does a day or two worth of weighing the issues and watching the discussion unfold make much difference? I kindly ask that you no longer try to bring up the constest issue as this measure fully satisfies a grand prize winner. True there is no runner up winner to receive the forum title, but do you think people will really advocate for that now?
The.Grand.Nagus

Apparently the second contest winner's entry was in violation of the contest rules (http://www.startrekonline.com/contest/alien) as well, as it did not address the required setting of why the alien species was sitting next to you in the space station cantina

While it is true it does not mention the cantina setting, it does mention all of the other things that were asked about the species and then some. At this point now you are beginning to argue over the less tangible parts of the contests and the subjective decision of the judge. The judge thought that Cold's story creatively described the aliens. He went beyond the bounds of the cantina setting, and wisely so that he had more words to use in describing the aliens instead of having to use precious words in dialogue. Presentation is also one of the judges criteria of judging and this is a subjective matter I believe that does not need to be fought.

hmm thats a good point, its just a race description and not actually a story based in a bar/cantina
meh...regardless, congrats.

the lack of a setting it in a bar/cantina, it is basically a description without any sort of mention about a bar/cantina

Hey, I didnt bring this up, I was just responding to the post of the person who actually noticed it. Either way though, this appears to be another example of overlooking the rules, or at least trying to justify not following them. Your arguments/justifications are basicly the same ones that were made for the original winner not obeying the word limit rule.

While, going off of memory, my initial reaction was that this entry too also broke the rules, upon reviewing the rules, explaining how the alien ended up at the cantina sitting next to you seems like a suggestion for the framework of a potential narrative, not a rule. I do not get the impression that we HAD to say how they got there, what planet they were from, what kind of culture they grew up in, etc. (chances are very, very few touched upon ALL of these)
This winner seems entirely legitimate, and I support his winning of this competition.

Interesting entry, and congratulations to the author! I still don't think that this "controversy" merits attention that it is getting, but it is good to see that Cryptic Studios are taking steps to appease the community regardless. I'm looking forward to future contests, even if the winners have to be chosen through some sort of random method instead of based solely on creativity.

I did leave the bar/cantina setting out but it was on purpose. The 300 word limit dictated that much had to be cut and I chose to cut flavor (the personal setting) in favor of facts and description. Since I assumed that the information I provided would be used at a later date to add content to the game I wanted to make sure that I gave enough info to achieve this end.
IMO that's why TheHybrid was over on words he added content and flavor. His story was a much better read. Mine was kinda dry and Wiki like.
As long as he keeps his beta slot then I guess its cool. Maybe he will let me be his wingman in beta. I can ram with the best of em.

I'd be inclined to give this more slack as the world limit was (in theory) a hard limit everyone had to abide by, presumably to make the contest manageable for the devs. Since the intent of the contest is to give an insight into a new alien race in general, that particular line seems more a guideline than a checklist of things to explicitly discuss.

Agreed. And TheHybrid touched upon all the requirements of rule one: the cantina setting, identifying the alien, giving a sense of what their biology is like, etc. But in doing so, it caused him to double the limit. The word limit for this contest specifically (because it supported a narrative) should have (IMHO) been longer since this contest specifically set up a narrative, and 300 words doesn't really allow for an interesting follow up, because, as Coldsteel pointed out, you have to sacrifice either "flavor" or "facts", and if you spend all your time creating a setting, then you'll never get to introducing the alien, which is the cornerstone of the competition.I think he made the best of the situation.
Also, if you want to be technical, it never explicitly said that we had to stick to the cantina setting, just simply introduce the alien met in said cantina.

No I don't have it. Unfortunately I do my editing on the fly so it was always changing. There were no "copies per say just one work that changed until the final version emerged.
But I can say that the flavor elements of my story were not as good as Thehybrids. He would have won the thing for sure if my "original" were compared to his winning entry. At least I think so. I have always been better at getting an original or unique idea down on paper then i have been at telling a good story.

Just out of curiosity, since you admit you purposely left our the bar/cantina setting that you were told to include, did you feel like you were breaking the contest rules? Do you think the people who did include it like they were told to do so should not have? Lastly, do you think it was ok that the original contest winner broke the rules? Just to be clear, I'm not saying what you(or the original winner) did was "wrong", but simply that the rules, as they were written, were broken.

grats on the win, but I found it difficult to scientifically reconcile their intolerance to g-forces, i.e. decent resounding slap could kill them (depending on the nature of their vulnerability of course). A quick wiki confirmed it, with the following as decent pointers:
High-g roller coasters 3.5–5 g
Formula One car, maximum under heavy braking 5 g
Maximum for human on a rocket sled 46.2 g
Brief human exposure survived in crash >100 g
Space Shuttle escape velocity = 3g
.. the last one particularly telling, as chemical rockets or magical space pixies, you're still gonna be exposed to 3g in achieving escape velocity (for an earth-sized planet). I appreciate the author says the aliens developed inertial dampers etc as a techno-solution, but it would seem to be a terribly fragile race for anything they did up to the point of developing that technology e.g. driving cars, falling down stairs etc. Which would seem to preclude their overall survivability.
Don't want to pick fault, I liked the story, but the staggering g-intolerance broke the fourth wall for me, sorry.

You are correct on the science that you have presented but let me remind you this is an ALIEN world we are talking about here. With only 300 words I cant give you a complete rundown of their native biosphere. In there natural environment they do not encounter these extreme forces. The main reason for this is that there natural habitat is at 0.25 G. A "slap" as you say on their world is not as hard or fast as one is here because it doesn't have to be to achieve the same result. So what we would consider a minor change is major to them.
As far as cars and other modes of transport. They really just don't exist. At least not at "Formula One car, maximum under heavy braking 5 g" levels. Don't know about you but unless I am playing in my Z-28 I don't go much over 1 G.
EDIT: For instance do we here on Earth fly around at 40,000 mph? some organisms can handle that kind of acceleration but we can't. Result, we don't do it.

I felt like I was following the spirit of the rules. Was it to the letter? Maybe not. I have not really examined it anymore closely. Perhaps I will. I read the bar/cantina thing as giving the writer a place to start. As a way to get there story going.
Originally I had that in there but I could not tell the story I wanted with it in inside of 300 words. I had to make some decisions on what to cut. The bar/cantina flavor stuff seemed to me to be less important then the fact content. So flavor was cut in favor of fact. I thought the purpose was to give the community a way to actually participate in adding content to the game.
There could also be a follow up contest in the future asking other people to add to this races story. With more facts in the original it would better guide future writers later on. There would have to be some way of adding to this story later because 300 word just wont cut it in the end facts or no facts.
In the end everyone had to make the call on what to cut or if to cut anything. I deemed the 300 word limit more important then the bar/cantina scene. That's my call. If it means I didn't follow the rules so be it. they can disqualify me at anytime.
I realize no one is really chastising me here. I just want to let you know my way of thinking so that this is better understood by anyone that cares.

I see, and thanks for the response. I think it would be nice if, in the future, Cryptic would only post rules that they are actually going to enforce. This would ensure that the competition is actually fair, and not divided into a group of people who followed the rules and a group who choose not to for whatever reason.

Congrats on the win, but I thought that in order to win this contest...you have to talk about what happened in the bar, not a species bio for the main computer. It reminds me of the planet identification contest winner...it wasn't what was asked for, but won anyway.

Much better start than the first contest winner announcement :) thanks for the turn around guys!
A better turn around cause NO ONE feels cheated. anyways congratz man great read it was more like a starfleet report rather then a story that is really in-depth, an STO should use it as a back drop to one of the races in the game i think i'd even play 1 well gratz again man an be sure to smash them bugs out for the rest of us

I thought after I posted my comments that they must come from a very low gravity world (assuming that's feasibly habitable as life is developing), as you say, the word limit prevented you from going into detail on that. Poor buggers would have to wear those g-suits whenever they are in any terran-standard environment tho (bless em)

Q: What of the places 3-5... Could it be like Winston Cup points and a good race for a season long standing
intoto?
I could see the difficulty if you do not have notes to refer to on submissions discarded..
However the current Contest Winner Tables could form a reasonable test group compromise for beta placements?
With or without fanfare? I trust the happy few [to paraphrase a past British monarch before battle]
To be discrete on the matter.. and not lord it over others.. without need of impossed sanctions to regulate the affair?

I just got into the contests this month and I actually missed this past one for March. Reading these threads have somewhat confused me...
Are we still doing screenshot contests for chances at the BETA? Or has it officially switched to a lottery system now?
