recently i came across ST online and started reading up on it, so far from what ive read you can only be Federation or Klingons.....
Is it possible to play as Romulan or fly Romulan ships? Not everyone is a fan of the good guys, and that would be a huge motivator or selling point for me and im sure many others to play the game.
Romulan tech has always been right with or better than Fed and their ships look 10x better in my opinion.
So is this possible now and if not would it be possible later on lets say in a expansion? Thats really the only thing holding me back ffrom playing.

Romulans aren't planned to be in at start, many hope to see an expansion for them (me included). Check out the FAQ and the sticky here:

You can create a Romulan with the character creator, but they will either be in starfleet or the klingon empire. You can not fly Romulan ships except possibly in a few missions.

Yeah, good point, since a Romulan is basically a Vulcan with a funny forehead....

Awesome, well looks like i will have to give the game a go when it starts up.
Quick question, lets say I start with Federation character and later when Romulans come in, will i be able to transfer assets to the Romulan or will it be 100% starting over ?

We don't even know when Romulans will enter the game, let alone when it will be a playable race. But judging from other MMO's you won't be able to transfer everything to this new character ...

Who said you had to be a good guy? Our pure Cardassian fleet will start off in Federation ships and we are not going to be nicey nice packed with politically correctness. We're going to do our thing and wait for the true expansion to begin.

I meant playing as the Federation or Klingon which now tend to be the good guys. Im just not the bandwagon type, even with watching the show, sure i was always pushin for the good guys cause its the the natural thing that is taught to us when we were kids, but secretly every time Picard came up against Roms, deep down I always had a sinister hope that the Enterprise would get blown to hell and back. Sure that would kinda kill the show but it would have satisfied me =)
Does that make me evil =P
Never cared for the Klingons either. Cardassians were always kinda neat but still not to my liking.

Hopefully the Romulans will be added at a later date as members of one of the two existing factions.

That might take a while ... I doubt we will see Romulans or any other race (such as Cardassians, Ferengi or Jem'Hadar) playable soon after the launch.

In my opinion they should have the federation as one faction, and an alliance between klingons, romulans, and cardassians as another. Sure its not very canon, but it would solve the population imbalance.

Seeing as how Cryptic seems to be promoting character choices and customization, I doubt the Romulans or Cardassians will be added as stand alone factions. For instance, the "Klingon Empire" of STO doesn't consist of just Klingons, but Gorn, Nausicaans, and Orions too (plus custom races). People might still be scratching their heads as to how an alliance forms, but I'd venture to guess that the Path to 2409 will reveal that in time.
For the sake of maintaining as many player options as possible, I don't see the Romulan Star Empire literally translating into what we saw on screen, but rather it may turn out to be that the "Romulan Star Empire" might be the Romulans, Remans, and Cardassians (and maybe more races). This would of course require Cryptic to explain how the Cardassians end up with the Romulans, but if they can do it for the "Klingon Empire", then they can do it for the "Romulan Star Empire." Who knows, maybe some remnants of the Son'a persist, any ally with them, etc. I really hope that when the Romulan Star Empire that Cryptic will take the time to be creative and beef it up with some more "official" races.

Romulans seem like a no-brainer for a first expansion.
I'm glad the dev team has chosen to focus on Federation and Klingons to start. It is a a classic rivalry, and by choosing to focus on two factions it allows them to spend more of their resources doing a good job on those instead of being spread too thin to start. It is a bummer that the Romulans are on the side line early, but I think STO will be better for it at launch. Plus it gives us more to look forward to later ;)
