If hit detection IS going to be in the game, won’t there be a problem with people going around continuously ramming ships (in high security areas). I wonder how the “police” would respond to someone ramming a ship in high security space! That all said, it would be pretty funny going around PVP ramming. Ram off anyone? :D

ramming will only be allowed if you are in combat. Probably a skill in the UI or something. Most likely, if you ram something just by accident (or on purpose, but not in combat) youll just bounce off or auto stop before you hit them.

so you can finally do your Jem Hadar ram like they did on DS9 :)
Still ramming a vessel would seem like a tactic or a last resort thing to me, hopefully it will be ingame!

Well in dominion wars for the computer warp bashing was a viable tactic, I found that if I was stuck on a level I could go to Warp put all power to the forward shields and if done right destroy the enemy ship with little damage to my own. This however this is rather unfair when dealing with real players that aren’t the computer, one second your flying from a battle you just won and the second, half you ships been ripped off. So warp bashing would be unfair and probably won’t be in the game as for ramming on impulse power that might be there.

Warp bashing in Dominion Wars....................I never thought of that. I just use the short cut key combo thingy that let you destroy targets manually!!! :D

yeah i hope its in then people need to look out. if they see a astriod they will have to move around it not run into it while there afk and the ship just stops moving.
it will also mean small ships will have to take care while trying to fly around a big ass battleship not to fly into it.
could also be fun when your fighting the borg and all of your ships are almost down for the count but the cube is also almost gone ramming into it with a core explosion would win the day i would just have to say RAMMING speed!!

I remember playing ST:KA back in the day and collisions (ramming) were enabled. Surprisingly, it helped the gameplay I think because the damage done to your ship was pretty severe and it forced people to actually use tactics in battle. Later in the game's lifespan people started to warp-ram constantly in online matches which was really annoying but if you destroyed the nacelles of an enemy ship then they would be unable to goto warp, so it kind of balanced itself out. I think we need to have collisions to keep the sense of realism in STO... I don't really want to see peoples ships clipping through planets, bases and other player's ships like in EVE.

I agree, ST:KA did a great job of handling ramming. It often left both ships pretty close to being disabled. There should not be a ramming command in STO, if you bump into something, you take damage. This will allow people to use the environment to their advantage, for example if 2 smaller ships are fighting a bigger ship, they can lure the bigger ship into an asteroid field. Then the smallers ships will have the advantage because they could maneuver around the asteroids while the bigger ship will have more trouble.

Hopefully ramming will not be included. I think there was an article regarding STO in which is was alluded to that ship ramming might promote griefing as allies "accidentally" bump into each other. However, it was not explicitly stated that ramming would not be included.

For the record, ramming IS in the game.
The devs have commented numerous times on tweaking the AI ramming conditions. There was one specific occasion i remember where a dev had to change a Klingon "Boss" because the second he engaged you he cloaked and rammed your ship.
In addition, Craig has said a few times that ramming is a viable tactic, but one they are working on balancing.

I just hope they make sure that swarm ramming attacks are balanced.

Then, as someone else suggested, hopefully it does not work against allies, and that it's not some kind of one hit kill..

Maybe if u ram something your shield power takes a beating, thus ur overall power. Also once ur shield goes its just the the players ship and the enemy ships' shields.
This may create alot of problems. There may be cool benefits of a system like this, of which we just dont know of yet.
