Travel time: is it going to be a nightmare like eve online, set autopilot, go do homework, eat, shower and watch some tv, then come back to see your still heading to your destination?
Size: is it going to be maps like eve online or ace online where you have portals or gates? or world of warcraft where it has huge maps that just load from one to another? blackholes maybe?
Missions: will there be missions where we can fly side by side our favorite characters on star trek? like, assisting the enterprise escorting a science ship through hostile space? or defending deep space 9 from a klingon offensive?
Types of play: i hear about resources, will there be mining? ship building? marketing? player based economy?
rare items: will it be like legendary weapons from ace online (make them yourself), faction from eve online (hard to get, but sellable) or like world of warcraft, farm instances/raids till you get what you want? or will there even be rare items?
Ships: will we be able to play outdated ships, like from the orginal star trek? can we play stations? like deep space nine, be like a marketer/trader/producer? or maybe own stations? like a shipyard?
Paint/color: can we costomise the look of our ship within reason?
owning: can we own more than one ship? if there is mining, and we like to mine for ore or whatever, will we be able to hop into a pvp ship or a pve ship, etc. when we get burnt on mining? or will our ship be able to do all? maybe with item boosting?
maybe all these questions have been answered, maybe none of them, spent 2 hours reading post, i didnt find my answers.

So many questions indeed. It's still too early to ask such things. In the meantime, Vote for Pedro, he will make all of your wildest dreams come true. :)

Lots of questions yet to be answered.
Travel time will hopefully not be like EVE. EVE got boring traveling from one galaxy to another with them all looking the same except for lighting. Hopefully with warp drive on SFO, travel time will be reduced. Even if its not, please developers, make the galaxies more interesting than found in EVE.

Well I will try to answer most of these, time travel, in STO will there will be worm holes and subspace conduits for short time travel, missions unknown maybe if your really advanced you could play along side original characters but you have to understand many like Picard or 7 of 9 are no longer in active duty at this time in the future 7 of 9 left and Picard is retired but still is an ambassador. I do remember the devs saying something about older ships but only in the holodeck and that’s not confirmed. Paint/color yes you can put decals and paint you ship in any manner you please and as for owning multiple ships that is still being decided upon, most likely one ship will be able to mine and fight there’s no reason it couldn’t a science vassal for instance might be better at tasks like mining though.
Hope this helped

i dont want space to be so small we all trip over each other as the universe is vast i think we should have a fairly sane type of transport so if i leave my ship in warp for say 1hour i may travel 3 sectors or even 6 i dont know the math i just dont want 100 players to be in every sector i come across as space is vast and there will be som much to do and farm small areas will be a bad thing but i guess as they use the alpha quadrant as the first space hole then add the others we will be able to expand to more new worlds.

lol they cant leave out picard :P always hope for time travel to the past
O.o that would be good missions, "repairing the timeline", going back in time to some of the top episodes and movies where you fix the timeline back to the way the episode or movie played. i dont think more needs said on that, just think playing the game of your favorite episodes.......................................... .. =D =O =B =D =O =D o.o O.o O.O o.O

The guy who necro'd the thread was the OP. I'm guessing he registered here, posted those questions, and finally got round to checking again only recently.
You're right, though, we do know the answers to many of these questions now. So in the interests of helping the OP, if he's still around...
- Travel Time: Won't be that long. Devs want to make a game, not a space sim.
- Map Size: The game is instanced - it's not a single seamless world. So there are loading screens between areas. But once you're on a map, maps are pretty large.
- Missions with Canon Characters: Probably.
- Types of Play: Yes. There will be crafting and gathering in the game. No mining mentioned, but 'scanning anomalies' and 'collecting bio samples' were mentioned. There will be a market. We don't know details though.
- Rare Items: There will be rare equipment/loot. No details though.
- Ships, etc: Older ships are in the game. Miranda is one possible starter ship. Constitution-class (like Kirk's Enterprise) is a Tier 1 cruiser. No player-run stations at launch, though.
- Paint/color customization for ships: Yes. Can adjust trim and detail colour. Can significantly alter look of ship too; swap saucer, nacelles, secondary hull, etc.
- Multiple Ships: Yes. We keep all our old ships as we advance, and we can collect more, etc. There are three basic types of ship, Escort, Cruiser, Science. You can do some Science-oriented stuff with, say, a properly equipped Escort. But in the end you're still better off switching to a Science ship if that's what you wanna do. So there is incentive to have multiple ships.
