heh i know this is quite a suggestion and might be quite hard to do as everyones voice is different so it may be hard to have a universal voice recognition system but still good idea

how bout voice recognition?
i mean imagine being able to call out to your crew "reroute power to the forward deflector"
or "evasive maneuvers"

could you just imagine how cool that would be
it would add that sense of realism to the game

star trek online would go where no other mmorpg has gone before

i mean seeing everyone thats called out on the series
in 10 seconds the captain could have made 10 orders
and have crew working on them
now imagine trying to that typing lol
it would drive me crazy
if voice recognition was implemented this would
officially be the best mmorpg ever to be invented

already star trek online is going where no other has gone
so why not go the extra 5 lightyears and add in something
truly awesome

First, welcome to the forum.

Second this was brought up awhile ago and some rather good, and bad ideas came from it. I am sure it is many a page back now. i also think this would be great. It would also be nice to have a push-to-talk comm badge/mic also.

It is doable with work (there is already voice recognition software) but it would have to be something that is toggle-able on/off for those that don't want to us it or without mics.

Could set push-to-talk IG to one key and Ventrilo to another key. That way you could still use both.

i was just thinking that you would have to do a push to talk
key for it but still the technology and software is out there
and a mic is just $5 from dick smith nowadays
but yea gotta have an alternative lol cant rely on a mic
and not everyone will like using a mic but you could execute
maneuvers so much faster and easily and it would be far
more realistic then pushing buttons
i mean did picard control his ship and his crew by
pressing buttons lol

You can do this if you want to and have the money. There's plenty of voice recognition software on the market. You'd need to get a third party program (this might cause T&C problems with you and Cryptic though) to operate your mouse for you and key in certain movements, clicks and key presses (i.e. the ones that tell your crew to do certain things) and allocate those to certain commands you give through the voice recognition system.

It would be a fair amount of work and pretty costly but it's doable. You cannot expect Cryptic to do it for you though, it will not be built into the game.

well as i said its a suggestion and as i said it would be hard to
do but it would be a good feature to have in the game and im
theres quite a few people out there that would get the software
to do it but having some sort of base system would be nice
like how there are add-ons in wow that the game accepts
maybe there could be be a system cryptic could put in like that
where a third party program could tap into easily although with
that there would also be problems in security i suppose

with the economy as it is you could probably hire someone to "play" the game for you as your crew while sitting back in your captain's lazy boy calling out commands... route it through a decent size plasma screen tv and would almost be like having a main viewer.... :D Starfleet/ Klingon uniforms optional.....

lol I actually visualized that happening as I was reading your post.

For me it's something that would be fun to have but I think it will get in the way of voice chat programs like Ventrilo which I'm certain fleets will use to communicate when doing large-scale assaults. This could be alleviated with a push-to-talk button of course.

Also the only game I've seen do voice recognition well is Ubisoft's EndWar and they spent years researching the best algorithm for that.

I don't think we'd be able to see it at launch at this stage but maybe in a patch after launch.

I can see it now....
Player "engage"
computer "end game?"
Player" Engage"
computer "end game?"
Player "ENGAGE"
computer "shutting down game"

we may yet see it i mean technology changes a hell of a lot each year

Sadly it would be a bit of a nightmare to get voice identification to work

firstly you have to understnad the premise on how it works

As you say a word into a VR platfrom its notes the modulation (speech pattern) of the word you say, it then tries to match it up to the relevant 'command'

i.e I call into a VR platform and want to speak to Mr Brown, the platform say 'please say the name of the person you want to speak to' I have a lisp(or a cold) so it sounds like I want to speak to my Blown, the VR doesnt recognise it so it asks me again, a second time it doesnt recognise it, I may then be asked 'do i know the extensions (shortcut) of person I want to speak to, I tap it in, the VR then notes that speech pattern with that VR, so the next time i call in and say 'Mr Blown' it will recognise it as it now has that pattern under his name.

Its not feasible to do this on the PC for this game, if it did it would have to be client based as opposed to Server based, I.E Ventrilo interactive (fictional name), where by you select a shortcut and add a speech pattern to trigger that shortcut.

hope that was enlightening for you :)

Yea voice recognition has never worked too well. Regardless, the game would still have to be programmed not to use it since many players may not have mics and couldnt use the component, unless the game ships with a mic, but I doubt that.

But.....if ANY game were to make voice recognition cool it would be STO. Yea, it fits beautifully. A great idea you have and I give you props for it. I had an idea once. That Nicholas Cage should stop acting, but thats not going to happen either. :(
