Alot of the time i have noticed that there is usaly a breif war of words (or diplomacy if ur picard) between two oposing ships before combat actuly starts wich leads me to wonder if it will be possible to hail ships that arent in your faction? does anyone know, has it ben mentioned?
sry if there has ben a thread allready made about his

Due tot canon it will very likely be possible. Also it would make no sense not to be able due to universal translators... Also diplomacy would have zero chance if talk wasn't possible. Furthermore, should the romulans ever become a playable faction then they depend on communication. That's one of their ways to test the strength of the opponents...

i wouldnt see why not.
you can probarly hail npcs and players but i render most players wont respond and will fire first ask questions later.

Hi,
There is the issue of moles in PvP. Most MMOs with active PvP don't allow communication directly between sides to help decrease this. Obviously, there're ways around it, but allowing free communication tends to make it much easier to relay valuable information on tactics and such from one side's PC chat to the other side. Still, they could do it any way they want, and being able to hail the enemy ship would be cool. Perhaps they'll allow full free communiation outside the PvP sectors, but once your in a tactical combat situation in a PvP sector, you either can't communicate, or can only communicate basic Hails ("Retreat or die, human!")

its very cannon yes but do you think that they will actuly put it in game? i havent played many mmos (wow and war is all) and in those cross faction talking wasnt possible, im hoping that it will be sto.
id love to play a romulan when they get realised as a faction and your right, it just wouldnt feel right with out some talking first with them.

Even in wow it seemed pretty stupid to not allow cross faction chat, but it was understandable from a story-perspective. However I cannot imagine cryptic to force this upon us.

I like that idea, id really hate for someone to go give away a raid or somthing but i still think there needs to be some kinda comms. Your idea is great i hope they implament it.

YES there should be cross-faction communication. It would not be Star Trek if the player didn't have the opportunity to propose a peaceful resolution before a physical one.

I think outside the PvP areas this is fine, but PvP areas are sort of a warzone, that is, implicit in the name, war has been declared in that sector, so it's not implausible that ships going into a warzone would not bother much with hailing the enemy to try and settle things peacefully. But elsewhere in the 'verse I think it'd be fine.

They would not stop us from talking to people just because there not on your side.

You can't stop the issue of cross faction "spies" or "moles" by limiting cross faction communication. Here's how anyone serious about circumventing it will do it. They play a low level alt character and join an active fleet on the oppoosing faction. They listen.
Information is relayed out of game via Ventrilo or teamspeak, maybe they will sit and listen in on their opponent's voice server.
So this reason for limiting cross faction communication is bogus.
What is a good reason to limit it is name calling and baiting and plain abuse from PvPers of an opposing faction. I think Aussies call it "sledging" in the context of a cricket game. Open cross faction communication leads to this. If the comms channels are monitored and ppl get warnings/suspensions/bans for this behaviour then it should be manageable.

Hi, the sledging is a good reason. In terms of cross faction spies, I did mention that I know it doesn't stop it, but if you are only allowed one faction per server per acount, and no communication, a mole would need to maintain a second separate account to be able to relay between both sides. Again, I know this can be done, but it makes it more difficult, and so it would likely happen less often. Many games, such as WAR, DAoC, others do this. It does not eliminate the possibility, but makes it more expensive, which will decrease the amount of it happening quite a bit. Being able to just relay freely to the other side would probably lead to widespread abuse of the system. Again, faction limitation is per server, so if you want to play both sides you can, just not on the same server. Perhaps it's not as bogus as you think.

Nothing is served with this, even if you are allowed only one factions characters...
Also Cryptic has stated that it might very well be that there will only be one STO-server worldwide.
So what to do when you want to play klingon for a change? delete all older characters?...
unlikely

Howdy Treff,
Well, I'd heard the one server thing, certainly if it happens it would change the whole discussion. "Nothing is served with this" might be a little bit absolute as statements go. Other games have used this type of system, I would guess there is some utility in it. Maybe STO doesn't need anything like this at all, but summarily dismissing it as completely useless?
Anyway, I am looking forward to the PvP aspect, and if they allow open comms, I will be happily throwing out the borrowed Shakespeare phrases from Undiscovered Country during battle! "Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war!"

From what I have been told, Cryptic's other mmos (COH/V) had a cross factional com channel. So unless there is a strong reason to break that pattern, I would expect to see it in STO.

I mean it as strong as stated, I find it useles to forbid trans faction communication in a game that is based on the internet, the one medium on earth that is all about communication between anybody.
There are million ways to trick this system, not the last being to simply go into teamspeak or ventrilo as mentioned before. About the disabling of multiple faction accounts, I think if anybody just really wants to spy on the other faction they will like set up new members of a fleet to delete their current character and go over to spy and then come back and being supported and pushed by the fleet... that's how i'd do it if i found the need to (which i don't).
So I meant it as strong, and yes you probably will be able to engage in battle with shakespear :D
As starfleet officer i am required however to give you a fair chance to surrender before destroying you, yo you probably have the first shot on me ;)

Who said I wasn't going to be a Starfleet officer? Just more in the Kirk vein than the Picard one. "General Order 24, Scotty!"
