Are they goingn to allow higher level/rank people help out lower rank people?
Say if I have been playing for a year and have a crazy powerful ship and I finally convince one of my friends to buy the game. Will I beable to team up with him and help him out on his quests/missions? I would assume you could because MMO's are for poeple to play together but I hope there isn't a bunch of solo missions that nobody can help you on.
Now if you can infact go help your lowbie friends I have another question.
Will there be solo only missions that you can only do on your own?

if u want to repay a mission u wont get much out of, other than helping your friend, then yes. In CoX, a lvl 50 toon could still run lvl 1 missions if u want to help, so i am confidant they will continue this in STO. Are way over powered for the mission though, and it gets boring REALLY fast. if u are that much farther ahead of a friend, i would suggest making an ALT toon to group with him.

Well, like you said Beaver, most MMO's are for group gaming and generally allow for either solo or group play for almost any mission/quest or whatever.
I quite like helping out Newbs if I can and I can't really see how the game would work without letting some higher 'ranked' players give you a helping hand if they so choose.
I would be surprised if there were any missions that you had to specifically do on your own as it kindof renders the whole multiplayer aspect redundant. I would say the missions/episodes/quests will probably follow standard MMO forumla allowing you to choose to do a mission solo or with friends.

While it wouldn't make sense for all mission types, what if there was adaptive mission-AI for combat missions with the idea that given the advancement of communications, your mission "objective" could call in reinforcements should it find itself outnumbered? The game would then have a way to scale the encounter based on what you brought to the fight.
Again, not all mission types would benefit from this. Exploration, delivery (unless running a gauntlet to make the delivery), diplomacy might not work with such a mechanic.
