I just remembered Captain Kirk saying "Put it on the screen" and the screen filling with a view of another ship from a third-eye camera perspective. Lots of other space games do this too, you can select a ship and zoom to it and check it out.
Anyone know if this will be in STO? Because it would be really awesome to be able to do that with ships within sensor range, or with friendly ships with which you can establish a comm channel when out of sensor range.

I have to admit .. this is a good one ! All you are looking at is an external view of the on comming ship. You might need to togle the "view screen" hot key or something to make it come up .. but yeah ... that's an interesting suggestion.

My guess not until we're flying from the captain's chair. i.e Bridge Commander view as opposed to Starfleet Command view.

It would be nice to be able to toggle that option on, like a map, but instead it goes to youor viewscreen, and you can bring up various bits of info about the ship and such :)

wellll not neccessarily .. though I could see why you would come to that conclusion. I was thinking about a seconday view screen .. to one side. But that may not be what the OP had in mind.
If it is the setting in which you described .. then you are correct. That will be a feature to be seen at a later time.

Actually a mini toggle-able view screen would be neat idea to.

Well, he may be refering that it was a feature on Enterprise too, which predates TOS time frame, not the actual years TOS was made. Chronologicaly.

I would like to see it as a small side window in the UI, or even a 'Viewscreen' option -- where a large viewscreen opens up over the 3D ship view that is used for space content. Would be nice to have 'sensor' data appear -- the better the sensor(and crew), the more info/detail appears.

Well having a screen in the bridge and having your crewmates around you while you and them were watching the screen and discussing if there was something on it( a ship,a planet,a station etc..) is what everyone was hoping there was in the game.Sadly every posibility for this to come true was vanished with the removal of the interiors of the ships and bases while you play the space part of the game(exploration, space battles etc...) .(There will probably have a bridge with a viewscreen on the instanced missions that will take on the ship interior but exept that don't hope for anything more for the moment)

Don't try and speak for everyone because, unless you are a psychic, you don't know what everyone wants. Interiors aren't high on my list of priorities.

How many times are you going to post the same, FALSE crap?
Let's go back to the beginning... Not once, in the entire run-up to the trailer, did anyone from Cryptic state that the game would have interiors. We were shown some screenshots that clearly SHOW interior spaces and Craig Zinkevich told us that STARBASES WILL, allow me to repeat that, WILL HAVE INTERIOR AREAS. The ONLY thing that has been stated as not being there are free-roam interiors, and it has been said that if Cryptic can make them have a function that creates fun gameplay then they will release them in an update as soon as possible AFTER launch.
Having a free-roam environment that provides NOTHING in the way of GAMEPLAY or FUN is a waste of time and resources.
So STOP LYING and SPREADING FALSE TRUTHS!

Ummmm sorry .. I think this is totally misconstruing the entire thread. IMHO the OP was not insisting on ship interiors .. but rather attempting to simply see the on comming ships on an alternate screen (as far as I can tell).
I think that "most" understand that ship interiors will be available later on in the development of the game.

The idea of having a "mini-viewscreen" sounds interesting. It'd be good if they could do it in a way that resembles the Cross-Com from G.R.A.W., where you'd have your main screen and then a comm window that'd activate when you recieved a hail form Starfleet/KDF HQ or another ship.

It could easily be a very small screen minimized to the top right (or left) hand side of the normal screen. Either toggeling a hot key .. or clicking on the screen would emlage it. There could even be an option available to have alternate sizes.

I think it should look like the Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator from 1982 so I can play it on my Colecovision.
Actually, that game had a captain's chair version:

Man, wouldn't it be fun to get that and re-rig it with a gaming computer and actually play STO. Or is that geeky? It'd look great next to my MAME machine though.....

That looks kinda like he screen when you get hailed by another ship but i think you could use it just as easly to get a closer up view like u talked about.
And i think i read somwhere there was only going to be one place where you could actuly walk around in. And that would be the bridge.

This screenshot is from perpetual's version of the game. But I see no problem with having a little viewscreen window pop up so you can look at other ships up close.

I personally think that it should be incorporated, but not be a priority. I think that the devs should focus on third person ship combat and such, instead of trying to re-create bridge commander.

Generally, I am a HUD Minimalist, so I would want a toggle switch to expand and collapse the information.
In the NY Comic Con Dev discussion, they talked about how people have different angles of desired viewing. I am more a SFB type person, where I will probably play at the maz zoom out scale - getting an over view of the battle - as opposed to those players that would want to play virtually from their ship POV.
So again, I would like a small tab/button that can open a real time 'inspection'/Scan window to get greater detailed info.

Regardless of where the idea came from .. yes that is very much what we are discussing .. and a pretty good idea: with one twist to it :
Being able to minimize or expand it:

I could see a VERY small icon on one side : about 1 inch square. I could work for incomming hailing .. even working right into Cryptics plots for varrious missions (this part might have to be added later on) ... and it could easily show on comming vessels as the OP indicated.
Click on the icon .. and : bingo .. the screen as shown ( or something similar).

You know, if they make 1st person POV available in ship combat --- like how Flight Sims allow you to zoom in to the point that you are basically 'infront' of the plane, instead of behind it -- it could open up possibility.
From a 1st POV, one could make a UI SKIN, where the art work 'frames' screen with 'Viewscreen' art. Granted it would not be 'perfect', but it would be something (depending on modding restrictions).
For example, here are some custom UI Artwork for WoW screen/UIs:
http://underworldexodus.com/forum/forum.php?mode=view&forum=UIForum&post=835
http://underworldexodus.com/forum/forum.php?mode=view&forum=UIForum&post=792
As you can see, the artwork basically lays as a different layer. So if 'space view' was the first layer, this 'custom' UI would be the second layer, and the Buttons/Tabs/Menus/etc would be on the third layer so you could click on them.

I would prefer something more available in game .. more like the example illustrated earlier...

This could be easily minimized to a very small icon that can still be seen just enough to understand what it is until it is needed. Even then it could still be an optional display.
Even better : If Cryptic sets this up where certain features could be drug over to a second screen (for those who have that option) ... this would be really cool. Main screen for normal view : Side screen for peripherals... ie: this view view screen .. chat boxes etc.. ( but that is another discussion ).

Me two.
I was just suggesting the above as something for the player that desires a 'looking at my view screen in the bridge' type UI.
