In your opinion, what do you think the monthly fee of STO should be? I know the typical fee for most MMOs is 15 a month.. However I think it would attract more players if it were say, 12 or 13 dollars a month. I know this topic is likely to be very touchy, however, with the way the economy is at the moment, I think that it is something we should discuss. Not to mention, the movie hasn't launched yet, so the more "intelligent" players to be are here, rather than those that are here to just troll, and drop the game after a week or two.
Opinions? Feedback?

With all the mmos I have played Im predicting a 14.99 price tag for monthly service. It seems all mmos start at this number then go down depending on how fail the game is.

i would expect 15 a month, 13 or 12 if you pay in a large enough bulk. i think the number of people that are willing to spend $12 per month on a mmo and not $15 is minimal, and while the economy may or may not improve by the time of STO's release, MMO's cost alot of money to develop and maintain; you make the game significantly cheaper, would make them reduce the quality of certain aspects of the game.

I think 15 is standard, but I'd pay in the 10-15 range depending on how the HOPEFULLY free first month went.
I think one way they could drive our fee down is if they changed load screens into advertisements, the same type on Hulu and such. Not blatent in-game, but 30 sec or so of ad as you change systems or go to a planet. It's in the theme of the shows! Something dramatic, then commercial! Please be gentle...

I'd throw the discs in the fireplace if they pullled a stupid stunt like that. There are enough commercials on tv. I don't want or need them in my game.

Anarchy Online did that. Plus, in what I'm suggesting, it's ONLY during load screens. If it dropped the normal 1 month payment to half its normal amount, would it be worth it? (15 to ~8)
BTW, I'm a man, and I can change, if I have to, I guess.
EDIT, just read your other one, and you are now my hero. Saw him at Epcot last summer.

It wont reduce the quality of certain aspects, it'll likely draw in more players, to at least try the game, because of its slightly, even by a dollar lower pricetag. The power of lower pricing is extremely powerful.. hence the .99 cents thing. Even if its a penny, most people go for that, even if they lose quality on it.

How was he? I saw him once a bunch of years ago(early 80s I think) and he was great.

They'll just have to see what the supply/demand graph tells them is the best option.

since i became interested in this game, i decided to look at other games cryptic developed, City of Heroes/Villians had advertsiments of the game in the loading screens, absolutely horrible, it would definitely be a gamebreaker if they did the same thing in STO.

Ads during loading screens would kill the game for me, not gonna lie - I wanna see my ship streaking valiantly through space while I wait, not some ad for Cocoa Puffs!
Depending on the quality of the game, I could even see myself paying as much as $20 a month to help make sure the game is awesome, seeing as it has so much to make up for it terms of past Star Trek games, with the obvious savings if you buy several month's worth at a time.
In my experience, it doesn't matter the if the price is $20 or $2 - if the game isn't worth playing, no one's gonna pay for it. Make it awesome, and the dough will come rolling in regardless of price.

1. Well, to each their own. The poor college student in me cheers it on. I think PBS has wrecked your brain to the thought of commercials. I just know that the same 5 load screens gets tiring after a while.
2. That it is.:D
3. He was pretty good, but I missed him preforming Alice's by minutes. :(

Aye, it would kill the game for me. However, some of us, like myself, are somewhat disheartened that most MMOs cost 15 dollars a month, sure I understand what it goes towards, but even a dollar off is another dollar in my pocket, and I can stay another extra month every 15 months. =D

companies are in the business to make money; a large amount of them find $15 a month to be the amount that would make them the most money, lower monthly fee would make less money, and the money would need to be cut from somewhere.

It's been my experience that most pay 2 play MMO's have a higher quality overall. I'd be willing to pay 12-15 a month if this game does well.
Microtransactions.... not so much. I wouldn't like to be nickel-and-dime'd

$15 a month is an insane bargain. if you play 30 hours a month, you're looking at $.50 per hour charge for entertainment. what else gives you that much bang for the buck? some people play more then 5 times that and pay less then $.10 a month.

Microtransactions are awesome for many business models even MMOs but I dont want that to be used in Star Trek. Basicly you will be paying .99cents or 1.50 for new ship parts or to level up to the max level or to pilot the best ship.
The nest model I have seen is 14.99 a month and if you buy in bulk like 3 months or 6 the price goes down a dollar or two. For me I pay for 6 month cycles to save money.
I have no doubt that Cryptic will use a similar model.

Maybe Cryptic'll end up charging a low cost (read: $8-10) for the first month or two, just in case raving fans end up not-so-enthusiastic about the game, and ramp it up when more factions become available and more people log on to play Romulans or Gorn.

My sentiments exactly! Microtransactions are the bane of my online existence - I can't justify spending a REAL $1 or two on something I might never use!

Yes, but MMO's (for the most part) are pay-to-play, while many other games are 1 time investments. In the long run, MMO's rip you off compared to other types.
I just don't want a pay for ingame stuff, like a few Korean MMO's. Give me a monthly fee and I'll do fine.

I dont consider them ripping you off. You pay to use their service. That covers everything the company needs to keep the game in working order and allows them to pump out more quality content. We will get free content patches (if they are like every other mmo) then down the line like a year we will pay for an expansion.
Thats what a MMO is to me I pay a monthly fee to play and then I give them another 50 bucks for the next chapter of the game and keep playing.

Exactly - I mean, MMOs are far more cost-effective than, say, a trip to Gameworks or the local arcade, and if you throw in Vegas for a comparison, nothing can beat MMOs in terms of pricing!

Unless of course we can go to Quarks and bet real money and win real money Oo! I wonder what the conversion rate would be of Gold Pressed Latnium to American Dollars. Hmmmmm:confused::D

Oh NOOOOOO - nonononoNO - I will NOT have gold-diggers running around making as much money as possible and then selling it for real-life cash - that just ain't Trek!
I see it being $15 USD but I would pay $20 if the game is good.

Ahhh true. There was a thread about the threat of gold farmers and a gambling facility would encourage them.
Oh well I will make my money else where.

True undercutting works. But what I think is that Game Companys know that 15 dollars a month is an accepted price tag for mmo subscriptions. Its enough to make a profit if they have enough subscriptions and the players dont feel like they are losing that much money cause if you spread 15 bucks over 30 days its not alot.

Yeah, I mean, I'd pay it. Just seems like, for a game like STO, personally, I would be likely to play it for a very long time to come, just seems like over time, I would look at the total amount I spent and go....
