i have hear allot of talk about star trek canon this and star trek canon that but my question and concern is will STO only stick to star trek canon? Should they? It is my opinion it will be allot better if they don't. im not talking about missions and history and stuff like that. im talking about equipment, technology, and things of that nature. for instance, now we have fighters and air craft carries if they don't have it in space in a highly advanced version with well practiced and researched tactics then that is just absurd. also what about things like point defense systems on ships....i couldn't imagine being in a space WARSHIP that didn't have some kind of point defense system even now we have the patriot missile system and the nemits class aircraft carrier has a state of the art fleet wide point defense system to take out missiles and fighters. another point is bombs...where do they fall in to place? shouldn't i be able to drop bombs on my foes and plant space mines we have all that technology now and i doubt earths military stop using and researching these things. geez there is just so much stuff to go on about in this topic so use ya mind and think hard help Cryptic think of what they my be missing. I look to my fellow gamers and trek fans to elaborate on this idea and debate it....

Well your premise is entirely flawed. The game is set 40 years after 'cannon' ended - therefore, unless we want time to have stood still for 40 years, cannon will have had to be put to one side and the technology/ ships and equipment will have advanced.

Well, since this is a major game, the first REAL game that Star Trek has on a computer. I know, many of you will debate on that, but in my opinion, Paramount should stick STO into Canon.

Well, since Canon often contradicts itself, as well as having it set in the future where no canon has been written, then logically they can't stick to canon and make the game. They can only stick to mostly canon.

QFT, this is completely correct.

As it's already been said, STO takes place some time in the future so the argument of sticking to canon is moot - however, in reading the "path to 2409" entries it's pretty clear to me that Cryptic is using existing canon to build that future - which is pretty exciting to me! If all goes well, we should see 2409 as familiar , but with plenty of new places to explore and new stories to immerse ourselves in!

I agree that the future creates a place where Cannon really doesnt apply. But I think the devs need to keep in mind certain key things about what has been estabilished in the past and make sure that it makes sense to do something in future.

Like we have seen the Klingons through Kirk and past Janeway. They arent hard to figure out. They like to fight they hate most races and want honor and glory.
It may be the future but I dont see Klingons changing much in that regard. I dont think they would be like "Oh hey Romulans you look like a trustworthy fellow join us on our quest for glory"

I say make sure it makes some sense before adding it. Dont change or add something for the sake of adding something if it woulnt make sense.

STO = canon + 40 years. Therefore, talking about canon = oudated :o

So much to read in this thread regarding this... too much really. The answer is "yes" it should.

Everything should stick to canon, but its just not possible.

I thought Cryptic was now kinda making the canon with STO. Is this a case of "only time will tell" if STO gets accepted into canon?

It's only a matter of time before a new ST series comes out, regardless of whether it's 3 years, 5 years, or 10 years down the road. I think eventually you'll get another series that takes place post Nemesis (unless they go for a modernized reboot) that will steamroll what Cryptic establishes, such that not only will it not be canon, but it will end up heavily contradicted.

This thread is a little moot. the ONLY thing considered official canon by CBS, owners of the Star Trek IP, are the shows and the movies. While STO draws upon canon, it is not considered official canon.

Unofficially, writers often draw on existing sources. Since STO is well-crafted AND since everything they do requires vetting by CBS, I have no doubt that some elements will find their way into official canon some day.

Read what you quoted over. You are not flawed, your idea is flawed.

Yet you all talk about the Defiant, and it too is way outdated

Canon, semi-canon, and kitbash are words that do not belong in an MMO

I really hope English isn't your first language. I'll try to make some sense out of this.

Point defenses: A system to destroy ordnance before it hits the ship? Ships in Star Trek have had that from day one. They're called shields.

Bombs: Seems ship to surface torpedoes fill that role.

Space mines: Generally impractical considering the vastness of space. The few times they've been used in Star Trek "canon" has been in a relatively small space like a planetary orbit or the mouth of a wormhole.

Despite the contradictions, STO should do the most consistent job of respecting Canon.

Canon, semi-canon, and kitbash are words that do not belong in an MMO

While I agree with that sentiment, "familiarity" IS a word that belongs in an MMO. People want to play and experience what they're familiar with from tv.
