Hiya guys! I'm opening up the next volume of Ask Cryptic. We're doing it a bit differently this time around, because I'm going to ask you to focus your questions on Character Customization. With that said, let the questions begin. :)

I'm very interested to see what kind of questions folks come up with! I'll offer just a couple, one that's perhaps a little off the wall and another that might be considered more conventional.
Are there any unique races that members of the development team have come up with, just in the course of noodling around with the character creator, that might show some of the diversity and flexibility of the Character Creator? What's the most outlandish Awen-original species to date?
Will there be limitations to which faction a player can associate a race with? For example, even though the Orions' are nominally associated with the Klingon Empire in-game, might I be able to associate my Orion character with the Federation?

With the recent image of the Starfleet officer on a snowy planet in a white uniform, I was wondering if we had uniforms for specific environments (deserts, Arctic) and if they were customizable too.

Say we want to have a Spock like character (Half Vulcan, Half Human) do we have to customize this ourselves or will there be an option to have this done automatically?
Say, Half Klingon, Half Vulcan?
Or Half B'Joran, Half Cardie?
And to this extent, would we get both the stats. from both races.
So if i had a Half Betazoid and Half Klingon, would i get empathic abilities the same as Deanna Troi, But also get Worf's Superior strength??

In the future, will there be extra customizations other than the ones that come with the release of the game? I'm sure that the character customizer would be very expansive at release, but I'm sure that there will be other things that players will ask for, or just some [very] Trekky elements that the staff at Cryptic may have forgotten about.

Will we be able to add elements to our uniform that will identify what player fleet we belong to?
That leads to a sister question, as with CoX, will we have the ability to toggle between different uniform looks? Like maybe between a fleet dress uniform and a fleet combat uniform?

Will there be options for non-organic life? For example, androids or rock people. Can these have gameplay effects, for instance androids don't get sick but they might suffer the effects of energy dampening like the planet Sisko and O'Brien were trapped on (DS9, Paradise).

Alright. I know some of my fleet members have these questions.
1. Can we make a Caitian character? As in can we have cat ears on the top of the head, not the side of the head, haunched, bare feet and a cat tail?
2. If I make a custom race, does it have to be named, and if it is named, does it get entered into the database making it easier for others to actually play as that race?
3. What nick knacks can I add to the uniform to help differentiate my character from everyone elses, like Worf's baldra? Can I choose another color for the shoulders besides the standard command, science, operations colorings?
4. Will I be able to change features of my character after the fact if I feel like I want to change them?
5. Is the alternate Starfleet uniform we saw in the latest screenshot the result of beaming down to the cold planet or actually a customized uniform the player put together?
6. Can we have something that isn't a uniform for alternate dress?
7. What limits are there in place to keep players from creating copyrighted races, like Wookies?

#1 If you create a species will you see others of the species you created?
#2 If there is a species for example the Vedians and there not in STO can you create that species?
#3 When you create a species will there be a mode some time in the future where you can create your own style of Starships, space stations, interiors, ETC?

What naming restrictions will we have? Obviously no Picard's or vulgarities I assume. But can we have a 1 or 2 letter first name? What about initials as our first name? Do we have to have a first and last name? Will names be unique? Just the first name or the last one too (assuming we have last names)?
In short what restrictions / requirements are there on naming beyond the Picard clones and vulgarity issue?

#1 If you create a species will you see others of the species you created?
I think this one is fairly simple, as inside the instanced mission system, you'll see other player's avatars. :D

What sort of body size and scaling will there be? Can we make a 7ft tall heavyweight Andorian or a dwarven Klingon for example?

In general, what sort of facial/body features can we add e.g scarring, tattoos, ridges (tails?). Two examples below:
Ex1 - Could I create a character that has visible implant scarring related to a time when he/she was a Borg drone?
Ex2 - Can we feature war wounds on our characters like Chancellor Martok has his eye patch, could we have characters with say one ear or weapon scarring etc?
Three
Will it be possible to swap out biological parts for part-machine, such as a mechnical arm or leg?
Four
Can we modify our character's look & feel as the game progresses?

Will I have access to all the Star Fleet uniforms I've seen in all the incarnations of the show's and movies.
Are there capes? =)
Can I get the police uniform from the biker cop in the Star Trek 2009 trailer? (the robot guy)
can guys have long hair?
Are there "Off Duty" Clothing options?
Will I get to make outfits for holodeck adventures? (gangster suits, super suits, etc...)
Are there environmental suits?
Can My appearance be altered after I have started the game. Can I go and "re-do" a character after I have progressed through the game changing appearance class and skills with out a penalty or having to start a new character?
How many character's can I make?
Can I be a robot?
Are there helmets or hats?
Are Borg parts in the clothing options? (like seven's eye piece)
Can colors be adjusted on Items not showing department? (science, security..etc)
Are there any differences in the create a player and the create a crew member?
Are there cat races?
Are there animal races and if so what animals?
Can I have all the Champion's online customization parts and clothes lol? Can I wear a super suit.

1. Animoids (Humanoids with animal characteristics) are common in much Sci-Fi and while few appear on screen in Trek there are still many examples. Will we be able to create species like these? Will there be a number of fur options as well as Animal based facial features?
2. Will there be an option to choose a characters "handedness". Can we make left handed characters?
3. How will uniform customizations work?
4. Headwear - will either or both factions have some headwear available to them?
5. Accessories - What kinds of accessories and personalizations are possible? We've seen scars. What about Piercings? Tattoos?

If we design our own species, do we get to fill in the blanks of the history, flaws, and bonuses of that race. More importantly if we design our own race do we get to 'discover' them somewhere else in the galaxy?

I think that focusing the Ask Cryptic Q&A is a great idea. I'm really looking forward to seeing what people come up with, and seeing what other focus issues come up in the coming weeks.
Every single Star Trek series has featured main characters undergoing either surgical or cosmetic alterations to appear to be a member of a different species, whether for clandestine operations or research missions -- are we likely to see this feature in the game at all? Along similar lines, will we be able to grow/shave facial hair a la Riker, or change our hairstyles midgame?
Also, is there going to be any sort of Starfleet (or Klingon Defense Force) record system, by which our characters' backstories/accomplishments/postings will be visible/researchable in the game?
Can a character be customized to do better in certain environments? Say, a character who is adapted to high gravity worlds, or is amphibious and can breath under water.
Will we be able to make tactical, or field uniforms? Beaming down to a planet in their standard issue ship pyjamas, even if they knew they were heading into a hostile situation, always struck me as unwise.
Any chance we might be able to choose how our character moves? Say, you could have someone who looks very confidant and always strides about looking straight ahead with his head up and shoulders squared; or you could have someone who seems a little jumpy, tends to look around him a lot and holds his hands away from his sides a little, like he is ready to draw a weapon (maybe twitches a bit from time to time :D).
I imagine that the answer will be no, but I just thought I'd ask; if new character customization features are added in later expansions, will there be any way to take advantage of them without having to start over from scratch (quadrupeds for example)?

I was wondering if we can have scars in the character creater. In specific I would like to have one eye that is damaged and milky white from a great battle. If there is eye patches that would be good too.

When character species are being created, will there be that varying size like a Ferengi and a Klingon? Even then will we be able to change their height?
Will there be options to create cross species characters?
Would the product of two species gain abilities of both or would this be random like the dominant and recessive genes which determine humanoid attributes?
When taking cross species into mind, if there was a combination that was both Klingon and Human, which side of the war would you be on, or could you choose?
When customizing a character, will their be costume customization as well, say if I was Cardassian, could I wear their traditional uniform?
When taking character customization into thought, will characters be put into ships at the beginning that reflect their attributes, like scientific, combat, etc.?
When customizing characters, will we choose which profession they will join or will that be decided in the game?

I want to know more about the uniforms, how customizable are they? Can you change your division color? Can you create an uniform that looks like the one from the TMP era or TOS? Can you change the rank pips and make them like the ones from TNG?
What about the Combadge? In concept art form the NYCC and the trailer we saw characters with VOY Combadges and in the Character Customization trailer we saw characters with a new Combadge, so, can we customize them too?
EDIT: another one, when my character gets promoted to a new rank, will it also be geting somehow old?
I don't know if this one enter in the character custozitaion categry but, I'll say it: Your own character may achive the rank of captain and beyond, but what about your bridge crew (or senior staff), can they achive the rank of captain? Can I have a starship in wich even redshirts are admirals?:pb

The Demo film was very clear as to what we can expect. In fact it answered so many of my questions that I almost drew a blank when writing this.
What stood out the most to me was the hair and eyes. Will a player be able to position the eyes where they want? How big/wide can they be made?
And the Hair. Will the character gen have the ability to give alot of hair strand detail or will it look like molded clay on top of our characters heads?
Last but not least: Zooming in How close or far away can we get to our Avatars?

Will there be 'body' customization (tall, short, fat, athletic, human, non-human, etc, like MassEffect or WoW), or will all races simply share the same 'unibody' - ie same body, different head? Will 'short' simply = shrinking scaling like swg.
How will you avoid having two different customized races using the same name? How about someone using a Star Trek Name for a customized race that doesn't match the fiction -- ie a calling a Vulcan w/Antennae called a "Kzinti"?
You said there will be different type od vulcans. Just how different? Blue skin, forehead ridges, 3 eyes? Or will there be logical limits - like limiting the differences to hair,/eye color, human skin tones?
Any animalistic heads - ie lions, avian, wolf, mantis/insect, octopus?
Seems like there is alot of variety. What are some examples of the limits?
When are you going to cut down that forest and show us a STO Gorn?

My first question may not be relevant so ignore it if that's the case.
-How are you going to distinguish the difference between premade characters (such as humans, klingons, vulcans etc) and custome made characters? Will premades have more options such as multiple kinds of head-ridges on klingons and such and will custome races get to choose their bonuses and weaknesses?
-To what degree will we be able to modify the humoid figure, will we be pretty much strickly human in size or will we be able to alter scales to make us larger or smaller or bulky or gaunt like and so on. Furthermore, would we also be able to have slight changes to our figure such as hunched legs or multi-jointed limbs or even elongated and slightly off proportions?
-Will there be extra appendigies that aren't so much usuable limbs like wings or tails or tenticles etc?
-Will we have options to remove or change parts of the human body like not having a nose that sticks out, or having no ears on the side of ones head?
-Will we have multiple costume slots for times when uniforms aren't needed?

I will third this, the customization is immense, but I don't want a twelve eyed Vulcan, or a blue Klingon. On that note I would like to be able to have the ability to create my own race with as many eyes and those eyes being as big and as far apart as I would choose to make them.
What are the limitations on known races?
What are the limitations for new species on release?
What are the hopeful changes to these limitations after release?

Are playable races all going to be bi-pedal humanoid types? Or are we going to have a wide variety of sentients ala USS Titan?
At launch, yes. Most player characters are going to be bipedal, although there will be additional body and costume options (like tails and maybe different leg options) that allow you to push the boundaries of that. Hopefully we can add things in later because we know everybody wants to play the Horta.

1. Will players be able to choose a first and last name for their character? Will there be an option to select whether or not your character just has 1 name or both the first and last name. (Eg. Vulcans seem to only have one name. Spock, Valeris, Tuvok, T'Pol). And obviously human characters as well as others have both a first and last name. Will Bajoran names work similarly to the show? (first names being their surname and last names being their given name)
2. Will there be a measurement system for feet and inches when creating the height for your character?
Will there be the ability for a player to create a subset of customization and save it, so future players can recall those restrictions in making an Avatar. For example, can I make a race or species called the Lornaught and restrict height, color and facial ridges so that when a fellow player wants to make a Lornaught they know what the species can and should look like?

"Esprit de Corps" Fleet Patches on Duty Uniform .
The Existing Star Fleet Community of old SFC Fleets have long held Identities through Avatar Patches.
Could the Design Team review and approve integration after censors review.
I believe you could have all the visuals in a paper doll kit to create any SF Canon Race to use on a Star Ship
even if the Faction you come from isn't playable as a whole?
Copyright infringements not withstanding.. how do we push the envelope and stay practical..
I do not envision the need for a Cape or Cowl here..Mild mannered StarShip Officer by Day..
User of Holographic decoys by night.. I would think the Shore Leave time is for a Wide Personal Civilian Attire Purchased from the DS9 Galleria.. Promenade of Course some Dress Code would apply to keep Rabbit Coats and go go boots to a minimum?

Can we alter the spine's curvature to effect their stance? Also.. we know nothing about stats and abilities. If i want a character that is agile and quick would that mean hes fast and quick on the ground but useless commanding his ship? Will agility even be a stat? Lol.. what stats will we have and what abilities can we choose if it is an option?

I second the question how hybrid characters like Human/Vulcan, Klingon/El-Aurian, Bajoran/Cardassian etc. will be handled.
Will there be androids?

What are the limits of custom-species' abilities? It's a safe bet that you can't play Q as your player character in STO, (unless figuratively if you are trying to be a mad scientist but that's another story) but how close can you get? More specifically, what are the extreme limits in the following areas:
Physical health, strength, and resilience. This is an obvious area. If a character is created for surviving just about anything without active defense, what are the limits, and how would they affect gameplay? What kind of dangers does the character face, and what stats decrease the direness of such dangers? Temperature? Specific chemicals or types of chemicals? Germs? Falling?
Agility. If a character is built for speed, while sacrificing other attributes, how fast would such character be able to move, compared to a human's maximum speed? How else would it affect gameplay?
Psionic abilities. As far as I understand, in the world of Star Trek all humans have some limited psionic abilities, Betazoids can read minds and other brainy aliens can make illusions, and Platonians (who started as humans I think) can do telekinesis better than jedis. So, what psionic abilities would be available to custom races, to what limit, and how would game mechanics handle it? Remote viewing? Kinesis? Illusion? Mind control? Generic head-popping psionic attacks?
Jumping. How high and how far could custom species jump, and how useful or useless would it be?
Swimming. Will swimming ability and swimming speed be attributes for custom species? I assume this could go in the opposite direction - hydrophobia is a trait common to many fictional extra-terrestrial species; so would it be possible to free up some stat points or whatever by making your character hydrophobic?
Climbing. Would it be possible to make your custom species capable of climbing walls and ceilings like a gecko, or at least capable of pulling itself up on a ledge?
Flying. Whether physical or psionic, would custom species of space aliens be able to fly like Superman or birds or insects?
Teleportation. The transporter can do this, but some aliens can teleport themselves or others without a transporter, and through shields. Would this ability be available to custom characters, and to what extent?
Stealth. Would it even be part of this game? If it will, in what ways would custom races be adaptable for stealth, and to what extent? Optical camouflage? Electromagnetic camouflage? Acoustic camouflage? Olfactory camouflage?
Shape-shifting. Would this be allowed in a player character, and to what extent?
Economy. It's a safe bet that the Ferengi, as a pre-implemented species, could get some economic bonuses; but what about other custom species, qualitatively and quantitatively?
Now some other, more general, more esoteric questions:
Would it be possible to play a machine, like Data?
Would it be possible to change character species? Perhaps to a machine, like several "mad scientists" have done in Star Trek canon, or to half-machine, like millions of Borg? Or to some other thing entirely, like a brain transplant?
While this is insignificant in comparison to changing species, I will ask it anyway: would a character be able to get a sex change?
If the answer to the first and third questions are both true, would a machine character (in a world of already ill-defined machine sexes) be able to get a sex change?
If the answer to the second question is true, how would a species change affect species-related bonuses, rather than just appearance?
Is it possible to create a character that would be the best at one thing, like hand-to-hand combat, but completely incompetent at anything else?
Would it be possible to invent and program custom abilities or at least emotes, like making a character's head explode for no reason every once in a while?

Are we going to be able to have a variety of digits for our hands (2 fingers, 3 fingers, 5 fingers, 2 thumbs, etc.)?
Will we be able to have energy beings (non-invisible, glowing, possibly transluscent which could be by varying degree, depending on what would be allowable)?
Are cybernetics allowable, and how would they work in the game (such as Geordi's VISOR 'bananaclip'/cybernetic eyes)? And could we be able to make partial Borgs/recovering Borgs (Seven of Nine, for example)?
Will we be able to have multiple pairs of arms at launch or will it have to wait until after launch?
Would we be able to have multiple lips/mouths, bellybuttons (darn censors!), sets of eyes?
What about aliens that need exoskeletons to operate in Earth equivalent gravities? Would we be able to have characters that are niether robots or cyborgs?
Would aliens that are animalistic in appearance be represented through Costumized Aliens (i.e. such as the mongoose and cobra types in the episode that had the first appearance of Chief O'Brien as a security guard in the first season of TNG)?
Are any of the uniform options (from the movies, episodes, and possibly other sources) unlockable, or are they all available at start? Are there more options going to be added in to add variety to Klingon faction aliens (i.e. the Klingons themselves, the Gorn, Nausicans, etc.)?
Would we be able to have Captain's shirts (like James T. Kirk's green shirt) and Captain's jackets/shirts (like the set that Jean-Luc Picard had in the 5th season of TNG)?

Character Customization is such a diverse subject when it comes to any online game which allows such a thing, That being said i have came up with a few specific questions i feel would be appropriate for cryptic to possibley answer to give us some details upon Star Trek Onlines character customization.
1. With many online games character customization i find can be limited to specific character sets, For example another game i play already has predefined sets of options for customization although this does offer some diversity it is quite easy to reach a stage where the preset or predefined options become infact boring and limited due to the limitations and lack of creativity How has Star Trek Online decided to combat this?
2. In Combatting the problem of predefined sets of character customization how many options or sets of options will be available in customization for example how many different options are there available for the customization of a klingons very prominant face?
3.Will there be an extremely rich and diverse combination of customizable options available? say thousands of options open? or will there be a limit to what customizations can be made and will those limits be restricted to species specifics and also be predefined or is there going to be a very easy to use interface for maximum customization and effect?
4. In Customization of characters will there be other options such as selecting character hybridisation? Examples include: Romulan and klingon, Klingon and Human. Romulan and Human, Romulan and Reman, and so on....
5. As with everything in computer games the options are restricted to the number of files in the programs folders for instance there is a file for the shape of a klingons head etc, because of this has Star Trek online considered to problem of the predefined characters and the customizable faces/uniforms/accessories programming lagging the game somewhat say if the data of what a character looks like needs to be transfered over the internet so that on each person playing can see the character on their screens in the correctly displayed format?
I think thats all i have on character definitions.

6. In customizing a character i trust Cryptic has been able to make it as diverse as possible while averting the "World of Warcraft" type preset where a character can run round naked inside the game which i think is highly inappropriate.

My question relates to the abilities/skills side of character customization.
Vulcans have increased strength and mental abilites along with the Vulcan mind-meld and nerve pinch. Betazoids have an empathic power. Humans don't have any of these abilities So my question is this:
If we create a customized race from scratch, will we be able to add any traits or abilities to that race such as one of the skills/abilities mentioned above? Possibly through the use of a skill points system or something? Or if we don't want an ability like empathy or increased strength (such as with Humans) will there be an option for increasing certain other abilities like diplomacy or tactics for example, to compensate for this?

Will you be able to create a species with special abilities, i.e. telekinesis, high jumping, nerve pinching.
Will you have unique physiology depending on the species you chose, i.e. Denobulans take a long time to be assimilated
Will you be able to share your species with other players so they can be your species too?
Will you unlock more accessories as you go along, for instance buying a belt from a tailor
Will you be able to alter your characters accessories at any time?

Can you give us some information on the Cardassian character we say. Mainly in regards to the uniform being Cardassian and not the uniform of a current faction. Was this done to show we will have costume customization and/or so that we don't get the wrong impression that they are specifically on one side?

Well spotted! I was going to ask a similar thing. I possibly want to play an Andorrian, but eventually would not wish to play on the Federation side. In a similar way will all races be playable as all factions? Additionally I'm interested in whether ships and ship progression will be faction related (makes sense) or racially related (also makes sense) Andorrians and Vulcans are members of Fed faction but wouldn't an Andorrian have an Andorrian ship and a Vulcan a Vulcan ship?

or how will ranking show vs. the federation ranking vs a ranking system form a fleet or guild ranking how will that show on the uniforms for example if your a captian of a ship and you join a guild they always want to make you a rookie , with low rank but yet your a starfleet captain hardle a rookie in deed . so how will the two ranks be show or compeat on the uniforms, also what about shoes / boots and boots with special devices or coms embedded in them or a hidden weapon ?

Character customization… one of the things I most look forward to in any game I play.
It’s been said that we will have the ability to customize our uniforms to an extent (that they will always look like a uniform) will we have options for what uniform we can use as a base, like TOS era, or TNG instead of what was used in the later movies? Is there any chance that we could get the option to have a more casual style uniform like Troi wore in TNG?
Almost going with that, will we have any options for an off-duty outfit, for when exploring a space station or simple social gatherings like holding a party at quarks, or a fleet meeting?
Character options, to echo someone else, will we have options for feline like races, tails, ears, eyes.
And to expand on that, will we have the ability to add “accessories” to a characters look/uniform, things like Worf’s sash, a Bajoran’s earrings, a breathing apparatus to name a couple.
If you create a new race of your own how will naming it be handled? Will you get to name it? If you do, and I want to make a race called Icarians, would I be out of luck if someone already used the name for another race (unique names?) if that’s the case, how will making a 2nd member of that same race work?
When you create a new race will you be able to assign them stats, or abilities that would set them apart from another race? What about races that are used to different environments, darker planets, breathing underwater, or simply a harsher climate like warmer or colder.
And finally I too would like to know if we can change things about the character post creation. Such as modifying the uniform, or some more flexible features (like adding scars, or changing hair colour/style)
Or will we be stuck with the same look from day 1.

Another question, I asked in another thread a while back. Is there a possibility of releasing a stand alone character creation utility something like that in EnB. Some time closer to release maybe, which will allow us to define our characters ready for the game launch.
It would be great if the starter ship customisation were also available , maybe staggered releases of these as development progresses.

Is that a 50/50 Federation/Imperial race mix? This could get ambiguous...
On a related note, can we create a character in multiples of 1/3, like 2/3 Vulcan and 1/3 Human, rather than in multiples of 1/2?

-If a character gets wounded and is bleeding, with the correct color of blood be seen? (Human/red, Vulcan/green, Klingon/purple etc.)
-Also, again, if wounded, does a players uniform become damaged, requring a visit to a tailor or the Quartermaster to repair?
-Will Vulcans have all their inate abilities? (nerve pinch, mind meld, etc.)
-Will Doctors have to research to diagnose and find a cure for an infection/disease?
-Will tricorders detect unknown lifeforms and will be up to our crew members to figure out what they are?

What I really want to know more about is how facial customization will work. Will each individual aspect of the face be customizable in aspects such as size or will there be preset faces that we will have to pick from? Considering the track record of Cryptic Studios I am assuming that it is the former, but I am hoping for confirmation nonetheless.

Q. Will Klingon foreheads be customizable or selectable from an array of possible forehead ridge configurations? Worf had different forehead ridges from Duras, and Martok had different ridges from Gowron, every Klingon seemed to have different ridges (with possible familial similarities).
Q. The forehead ridges of the Klingon in the Character Creation preview video seemed to be mostly part of the texture (painted on) rather than part of the polygonal model (actual geometry). Will player-character Klingons have forehead ridges that are actually bumpy on the model or will the forehead ridges mainly be part of a painted texture?
Q. We saw Riker had a full beard for most of TNG and Geordi grew a beard for a while. Will beards and goatees be available to Federation characters? How drastically can you alter the visual appearance of an established race before it becomes “custom”? Like Can I give a human a Cardassian forehead and have it still be human or would he need to be a custom race?
Would TOS “augment” Klingons be available alongside and modern Worf type Klingons? If so would they be considered separate races like Andorian and Aenar or would Klingons be customizable to the extent that both looks are achievable?
And will a Koloth style greasy beatnik pompadour be a hair option? I mean the original series style, not that crazy poodle thing he had going on in DS9.

Its come up once or twice but I just want some clarification on what limitations both the klingons and starflight will have? In particular the klingons, I personally don't want to be any race I please, but I'm sure you guys have already come up with a solution that still allows lots of fun customization.

How far will the uniform customizations go? Will we be able to make minor changes or can we choose between completely different styles of uniform such as Voyager, TNG, or First Contact-Nemesis uniforms?
