I made the grievous mistake of reading the comments section attached to the recent STO article over on MMORPG.Com ...
Sweet Kind Baby Jesus, deliver us from haters!
I know I occasionally growl at the forums here when people disappoint me with trollish behavior, or mindless whinging -- but , generally speaking, the level of discussion here is quite good. At the very least, it's usually entertaining. To put it another way, I've only found the need to block two posters in all my time here. Even people I disagree with on most points can still be reasonable in their presentation.
Not so much with the MMORPG.Com comments section ...
It wasn't so much the people with obvious axes to grind which put me off (people who stubbornly refuse to understand why player crews aren't yet practical, or why free-roam interiors won't be in at launch) -- it was the level of lies and intentional half-truths thrown about throughout the commentary -- things posters stated as true about Star Trek Online which just ... aren't.
I realized pretty quickly that most of the commenters don't even want the truth; they just want to shout and scream and rage. Hopefully, those who really want to know what STO is about will come here and look around for themselves.
As someone here said a while back (Varrangian?), the ultimate irony is, I'd bet you five strips of latinum and one Gorn-made donut (Gorn make great donuts -- few people know this) that the majority of the "they've ruined Star Trek" haters will try STO anyway.
And if it's good and fun (and odds are it will be both -- Cryptic does good work) they'll lie yet again and say they always knew it was great, and that they played it from day one of beta.
We now return you to your regularly-scheduled forums, already in progress ...

I don't even bother with that site anymore because it has been overran with trolls. It seems people there just flame bate and spout random insults at will. The mods there don't even seem to care. Its sad though I use to love that site had been a member since 2004, and finally gave up.:(

im still a member of mmorpg i do agree its very troll heavy, i get around this by taking everything i read there with a pinch of salt.
I also find the majority of posters overthere are "i know more than you" type of people and god forbid if you enjoy a game that that haters hate then your in trouble. I do agree i think the moderators should seriously consider getting out the ban stick :P

I've been spending some time in the STO section of their forums. I see a lot of the same things there too (not trashing the site though, just talking about some of the posters is all).
The other thing about over there that you have to keep in mind is that it's really convenient for the fans of other games to drop in to visit "the competition" and try and seed some negativity. They know it's a bit harder to do it here, although they are here too at times.
In a way one could almost take it as a good omen, since clearly some of them must be really worried about STO taking some of their play mates away. ;)
Then of course you have some from here posting over there under a different nick with the intent of making certain issues seem like they're more important to more people than they really are.
Oh what tangled webs we weave......

yeah, these forums are totally devoid of any kind of retarded posts, people just flaming for the heck of it... and it's good to see that.
for instance there is a thread where somebody spelled vulcan wrong within the subject and on any other forum there would be a plethora of peeps flamin about how this guy spelled it wrong and how retarded he is for doing so... spam spam flame spam
but here everyone just got on with the subject, like whatev. thats great.
hopefully it stays that way

I have to wonder if the editors at MMORPG.Com have simply decided to focus on news reporting, and to let the forums go largely unmoderated -- except for obvious things like bigot posts and such. It sure seems that way.
It reads like the inmates have taken over the asylum. I'd noticed the slipping down, over the last year or two, but the MMORPG forums now really do seem to have become ... startlingly senseless.
Thanks for your input JMD. I'll ask the Gorn to send you a donut, pal. ;)

I've not really been over to MMORPG.com much. Massively has been very positive, as have most of the comments.

Massively's contributors have also been very positive about us as a community, which is nice. It also shows that we are being watched!

Awarkle, Hagon, Trekster -- thanks for your insights, gentlebeings. Much appreciated!
Gorn-made donuts should be beamed to each of you at the earliest possible opportunity ;)
(Yes, Hagon, Klingons eat donuts -- they just make sure to pretend to hate them, if asked)

Thanks for the tip, Mars. I'll take a look at Massively as a news source. MMORPG seems to have become "compromised" as they say in the spy movies.
Oh, I've heard that the fellow in your latest icon is ... also a fantastic swimmer. ;)

You got the first one of the thread, pal! Look closely at my reply in post # 6.
I hope you don't mind green icing -- the Gorn are rather insistent about that detail ...

More like THIS (http://flickr.com/photos/karya_sac/517391072/) I think. The striping is supposed to evoke Gorn scale patterns, you see ...

I had to stop reading the thread over there, the comments on the little snippet for STO were overly self-important and negative. Walls of negative text were simply too much for me. You can find a flaw in anything, from Heidi Klum to a game. They seem intent on finding and dwelling on the negative.
So far I've been impressed with what I've seen out of STO with some disappointments of course. I believe we've all sat and dreamed of what a great Star Trek MMO could be, and what we envision isn't always a possibility. Hopefully enough people can give the game a chance and judge it based on its merits rather than their own expectations.

I'm not a regular over at MMORPG.com but I did have a look the other day because of the article on STO. I also had a look at those comments and got pretty annoyed at the people raging about no interiors at launch etc ..... However, I have found that on most other sites like that STO and it's community (us ;)) have gotten a very positive response. It's nice to know that people are looking at us and seeing a good example of an online community.
Long may it continue!

Not to blame everything on alcohol, some people are just ill mannered.
But I have to wonder if many of the posts would change if people were required to take a breathalyzer before they post.

I don't understand why people post so negatively, i'm glad that most of the poeple on this site are positive about the game, and are only taking into account facts when commenting. Personally I would only ever post here about STO, this is the place to be!

You should check out their Star Wars Galaxies forums... Yeesh! I may hate what SOE did to that game with the CU and then the NGE, and I don't hesitate to point out that had they simply FIXED what was wrong and added content instead of re-inventing the wheel twice, they would NOT have lost so many subscribers.
But those people over there hate everything and everybody. No-one dares go over there and even suggest that SWG has improved since the NGE. The whole forum will fall on them like revenous wolves.
You know what I think? I think that those forums consist mainly of the people who have been banned from official MMO forums, and based on their behavior, it is no mystery as to why...

I wouldn't put too much salt to the poster's comments there. You can nigh say anything good about a game unless it's popular opinion without getting hosed with flames from what I've heard and what little I've cared to read.

Well really it's pretty tame over there compared to a lot of other forums, and I like the more free wheeling aspect of it actually. Over moderation is stifling, and actually usually helps breed a different sort of undesirable element on a forum. The mods there do step in a lot, but usually only when someone reports, and even then they use some common sense instead of a "it got reported I must act" approach. That and people over there generally don't want the mods to fight their battles for them.

Ah, the Internets.
Understand that certain individuals who have been following this project for years have made a home at MMORPG.com, and an industry out of manufacturing outrage. One of those individuals was wildly successful in transplanting that industry to these forums, for a time.

Haha, yeah, just go to any sports related forum, MMO is quite civil.

Well, even in real life, compare an argument in a Sports Bar compared to say. Star Wars vs Star Trek. I doubt you'll get into a fist fight over SW vs ST.

I see such sites and slacking moderation like cheap clubs that let anyone in that can afford the $1.00 drafts/well drinks and a pair of shoes.
I prefer sites that hold their posters to a higher standard. Got a negative opinion. pony up some credible facts and be respectful, instead of ranting negatively like its the JerrySpringer show.
Biggest problem is the lack of accountability.

For those of you who want an intelegent disscusion about mmos or any game for that matter visit
Escapistmagazine.com
( no I dont work there)
but it is the most level headed online gaming community i have ever come across, they allow some profanity ( not excessive or racial slurs) its an all around good site with good articles.
( in addition it is the home of Zero Punctuation a comedical set of game reviews)

I also took a look at the comments at MMORPG and I definitely think there's a lot of hate-on for STO going on over there. I also got bored pretty quickly - no one is saying (or yelling) anything that hasn't already been discussed (and debated, and argued) on these forums until those horses were beaten into Elmer's Glue...

I only go there now for the amusment. The people that like the games they are playing are in their MMOs enjoying life, so of course all the sour grapes have loads of free time. It's gotten really bad since World Of Warcraft kicked the hell out of Star Wars Galaxies and some others and ended their existence. Now the fans of those games are running around to every forum for every new game in development and making such intelligent conversations as these:
THIS GAME WILL FAIL
THIS GAME ISN'T SANDBOX
THIS GAME SHOULD BE MORE LIKE SWG(my favorite)
THIS ISN'T A VIRTUAL WORLD,IT'S A SINGLE PLAYER GAME
ANOTHER BLAND MMO WITH NO NEED TO GROUP
THE DEVS DON'T LISTEN TO THE PLAYERS(which is really their way of saying "we got banned for trolling."
BLAH
BLAH
BLAH
They are mostly a tiny fraction of trolls who are never happy and never will be.

Yeah. I don't go there any more either. Constructive comments are usually (not always, but usually) ignored; there's no point in trying to fight the poor signal/noise ratio.
And just imagine how some of my more detailed concept posts go over there....
Mostly what I wanted to say here, however, was that the original subject line for this thread needs to win some award somewhere.
Funniest thing I've seen all week, not excluding the video of the dog chasing rabbits in his sleep.
+1!

I'm a regular on another game forum that allows a lot of offensive posts, and I'm bailing out today after an offensive post a few of us reported that will not be deleted.
It's not worth getting frustrated with the haters.
You wonder what the poster did?
He created a picture for the developer's twitter following thread. The picture is a Photoshopped Nazi picture - the lead developer as Hitler and his followers (presumably we would be the followers since we follow his twitters).
But apparently it's cool with the admin. they refused to remove it.
So I'll remove myself... I felt the poster intended to offend the members in the most serious way he could. If they can't moderate it - regardless of how offended anybody was - it shows that we are not welcome.
Fortunately most board administration is not quite this ignorant.
EDIT: I sent a PM complaint to that Comapny's board manager, within moments the whole thread was nuked and some very harsh words were given about the post and the members at large :( . This is why Cryptic has employee moderators. accountability. User moderators will often let stuff go that they shouldn't. With no actual company involvement, a thread can turn into a dirty mess.
