Ok - as some of you know I'm new to the world of MMO's so I'm hoping I'm not asking stupid questions that simply hasn't be asked because everyone else knows the answer to it already...

I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the concept behind guilds (or fleets as it is here in STO) I get that they are player created groups, but past that I'm kinda lost.

I've seen posts about fleet missions for example - Does that mean that higher-ups on a fleet actually can create missions for their fleets? To what ends? (other than Role playing of course) would fleet missions give me experience or whatever?

another question I have is about starbases - again, I've seen posts talking about fleets getting their own starbases, how would that work? I mean, would they need to gather the resources as a fleet to get a starbase, or do they just get a starbase by virtue of being a fleet? and then (less fleet related question) would they be able to choose where the starbase goes?

and I guess the biggest question I've got would be - I was poking around on the fleet forums and I noticed that a lot of these fleets seem to have been around from before STO and many of them have their own websites. is there something that dictates who could create a fleet? or a set of requirements before being able to truly have a fleet? or could a group of my friends and I just randomly decide that we want to be a fleet and start one up? And then (I guess this goes back to the starbase question) how do fleets register within the game (to get a starbase for example)?

again, sorry if I'm asking seemingly stupid questions (or ones that have been answered before) I'm just trying to get a feel of what fleets really are so I don't have to be confused in conversations and threads concerning them.

thanks

No need to apologize.
Most of your questions have not been answered officially.
However you do not need to organize a fleet before game is released. Usually in MMOs anyone can start their guild/fleet. Sometimes some resources are needed in order to better the fleet but you can pretty much have a fleet of just two ships for all we know.
Fleet missions are simply missions only accessible to members of fleets and usually require some minimum amount of participants (i.e if your fleet has 6 players then you can access a fleet mission that requires 5 ships).
The person who starts the fleet is responsible for fleets well being. He/She admits new members to the fleet and can assign tasks to other trustworthy members of the fleet to ease the management of the fleet.
In some MMOs you can get housing or storage facilities. Starbases may serve as such and much more if they are given/deserved in the STO.

first off we need to remove some ambiguous terms. So with Fleets, they would be like a guilds. Guilds are social groups which players can talk to each other through guild chat, and help each other in missions. If Fleets gets their own starbases, they will probably either in be placed in instanced zones like AoC or they will be placed in certain areas, also they will probably have a limited number of Starbases allowed if they are in open world. To form a guild, you usually have to fill a charter with a minimum number of players, as well as some in0game money. Websites and Vent arn't required to form a guild/fleet in a game but it is a strong selling point and many of the more experienced players prefer guilds with them. Warhammer needed 6 people to sign a charter where-as wow required 10 I think?

Fleet missions are separate then Fleets. Where-as fleets are guilds, Fleet missions sound like the would be more like raids. Large numbers of players, (generally the actual number varies, AoC had 24 whereas WoW had 40) fighting elite mobs to try accomplish a mutual goals. Most guilds are formed to be raiding guilds, so that they can fill raids every night with players that you know are competent.

Pre-game Fleets, formed solely to play the game, can work though since you haven't seen how they play it's hard to keep them formed, it's just a create way to stay interested and excited about the game.

ok - that makes a little more sense.

I figured that a lot of what I was curious about hadn't been answered yet, but thank you for clearing up what you could.
