Going back through IGN's old screen caps I noticed a few things that I really don't know what exactly its for, or what they are, what I'm refering to is this one right here:

http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/894/894459/star-trek-online-20080728033723529_640w.jpg
http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/894/894459/star-trek-online-20080728033722139_640w.jpg

I'm guessing its a planetary force field or something? Anyone know for sure I'm just kinda curious.

On one other note in this one

http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/894/894459/star-trek-online-20080728033726967_640w.jpg

Are those solar panels? I ask because I don't really remember seeing solar panel farms in the trek universe, so I'm just kinda curious, maybe a communications array or something?

Sorry if this seems self explanatory or was talked about when these screens first came out, but just looking for a quick answer, thanks in advance.

Honestly we never got any info about those screenies that I remember. In fact they were posted when the site went live, but everything we've seen since looks pretty different. I wish we did have more info about them. Good question, sorry I don't have an answer. It is possible it is something I missed though.

the first ones look kind of like alien space stations since they have what looks like "windows" on them

the 3rd link
On the site I think they called it a sensor array but whether they are for collecting data or power who knows

Ya, this site calls them orbital platforms.

Yea I wasn't all too sure considering there pretty evenly spaced around the planet.

I remember looking at those screenshots once and wondering the same thing.

The one that is supposed to be sensor arrays just looks silly :p

But the other one...hmmm...They might not be space stations because they are so close to the planet and large compared to the planets. Might be something alien that we just don't know about.

Yea I agree with the array one, it just seems silly. I can't really place as to why it does, maybe because its so big and sprawling? I'm not quite sure, it just seems silly to me, lol.

When I relooked over the shots with those things around the planet, two things came to mind either a ministarbase/observation platform, or some form of defensive array. I think why I was thinking the former is due to the fact there isn't just one of them, there are multiple and evenly spaced around the planet. Not to mention that obnoxious shape they have where they are "following" the curvature of the planet.

isnt it meant to be the argus aray which is technically HUGE. ?

although i could be wrong im sure there was meant to be some kind of technically observatory but they use it to spy on the romulans.

Look at all the big rocks.... this is obviously an array for defending the planet from frequent meteor bombardment.

I've already speculated on this ages ago.... but nobody listens to me :o

Here on STO they call it an alien orbital platform (as Truthseer indicated) that is "ready for docking". Maybe something like the pylons on DS9 where Starships can dock and disembark (maybe transporting randomly to the surface not allowed by aliens...?).

I had the same thought as you in the beginning, they only added the description later on ;)

or maybe something to do with the planet prevents normal transporters and shuttles? or even the planet itself is fairly "hostile" to life...

I hadn't even considered that, could be something like the Lothra homeworld. For trade these platforms would make sense, facilitating contact with oxygen-based species.

I assumed they had something to do with resource gathering.

I swear I saw something like that last pic in a TNG episode ... looks so familiar.

"Federation sensors keep watch over contested areas of space."

Is the caption on the Cryptic screenshots page.

Thanks for the info, didn't know the cryptic ones has captions, considering they have been releasing screenshots exclusively everywhere and not updating their own gallery, I hardly actually check it when I can just look somewhere else for the same + more, lol.

Either way those sprawling sensors are kinda silly lol. Theres just too many of them

I'm pretty sure those platforms orbiting the planet are either planetary defense structures or (more likely) terraforming structures...

The array looks good, resembles the Midas Array seen in Voyager, but considerably larger

I prefer that array over this sprwaling/snake structure personally, lol. I think it has just too many panels.

Has anyone else noticed that the trailer, the original one, that the Klingon Boarding party seem to have Federation Rifles and Phasers??

Me thinks there is a conspiracy, like in The Final Frontier!!

Just went back and rewatched it when you said that, lol;

I guess its one of two thing seeing as its really old it could be they just didn't have the artwork for the klingon there yet, or maybe each weapon has diffeent "Stats" or something, or just looks different and you have the option to choose what you want.

On a side note, a few seconds after that scene, there fighting on a planet in the middle of the day and all the rifles have their "flashlights" on, thats pretty silly lol

Maybe without them the Borg wouldn't consider them a threat. lol

Orbital platforms are certainly not one of the more exciting parts of star trek but remember that within the star trek universe so many things are automated.

Ya I brought this up in another thread. My guess is they just hadn't made the models for the weapons yet.
