I'm not sure if you did read it right. You do have a ship yes and you are a captain of that ship, but you are not Captain in rank. Hope that helps.

One more time... we are captains in title as anyone in command of any ship is referred to as a captain. Rank is another issue. There has been no real definitive word on if or how Starfleet academy will play a role in STO.

But if your goals was to scrub plasma conduits or clean the jefferies tubes, I'm afraid STO will not be for you.

We don't know about the Academy, there might be a tutorial or something. But you will start as an officer in command of a vessel (no starting as a crewman and scrubbing plasma conduits all day).

If the Academy comes into play at all it would most likely be in the form of the tutorial. Rank is a matter that hasn't been fully discussed yet.
