No offense intended, but are you going to have anything good to say about this game any time soon? This is your second thread talking negatively about it. As the saying goes: "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say it."

Actually, does a space sim coupled with a FPS sound like a pretty good game to anyone else? Especially when comparing its two halves to games that arguably define the genres?

Indeed; Cryptic coudl do far far worse than to make ground combat as (IMO) enjoyable as Quake IV, or better Quake Wars, were.

So far this game doesn't seem anything like that.

Appart from visual customisation im not sure you know anything about EVE - each ship has between 7 and 30 slots divided into 4 categories (high - weapons, mid tactical, low defense and rigs - roughly) and something stupid like 5000 different things to put in those slots.
Exactly how much customisation do you want???

Firstly - you didnt say visual customation in your first post - you said customisation - which is why I asked the question.
Secondly - I dont subscribe to the whole 'SIMS' generation of requring the ability to make my ship pink and fire flowers when i press the alt key. Real customisation is in playability - the ability to customise what a ship does - rather than what it looks like.
If this game allows us to move the warp nacells forward and put the bridge just over there and put a shiny bit there etc - but none of this has any effect on game play - then frankly - what an utter waste of time.
Thirdly - I know as much about STO as anyone else appart from the developers - which quite frankly means, I know very little about it.

I made the comment so obnoxious for a point, lol. While cryptic is good at customization, I mean look at their other games, I personally don't think that depth of "customization" fits in this universe, nearly as well as the comic book universe. I mean I'm for some customization, but not for the full spectum of colors and obnoxious things like that. I'll play the game regardless, but the first time I see a fleet of pink anythings coming towards me I think, that I might rethink my subscription. I'm hoping theres a "remove players colors" button, so everything shows up as gunmetal grey/blue for starfleet, and green for klingons etc.

Thank goodness you are very much in a minority with that way of thinking.
This may be an assumption and if it wrong I apologise but saying the above kind of gives me the impression you are a PVP and arent too bothered by the visual customisation over the effect customisation because you just want to get on with the killing.. and if so that is a shame as most of us hope for a whole lot more out of STO than another EVE by any other name approach.
I for one wholeheartedly applaud and anticipate the level of visual AND effect customisation we will be given that Cruptic is known for.. I dont want my character and ship just to be effective but to look cool also and I do not see that as an, and I quote "utter waste of time".

Far from it - if given the option I would spend as much time as possible improving my crew and fiddling with stats and hell, even organising the ships roster if i could - I love that sort of micro detail.
However, customising the outside of the ship, for me, is utterly pointless and also, for me, unwanted.
If im playing STO - i want it to look like star trek. Yes some of the ships showed minor levels of 'customisation' in the shows. Mirandas and nebulas with different 'pod' designs and the like, but quite frankly they looked 99% alike and recognisable. Thus, the ability to cutomise the outside of the ship to the extend described and implied here is a complete anathma to me.
Also - its a very short lived event. Spend 4 hours getting the ship looking 'just right' and then after a few days you forget all about it and its just the sprite on screen that represents you. Sure I may mention EVE a lot in posts i make, but frankly, its the only mainstream space ship MMO out there, so the parallels will always exist (yes I know this also has a FPS section as well, but we are only discussing the ships atm).
In eve - I started to forget what ship I was flying half the time because I spent most of the time zoomed out so I could see what was going on with the battle/mission/mining op and thus, what my ship looked like in minute detail, was infact, utterly irrelavent.
As for my 'eve' experiance, well, firstly I think its irrelavent, but secondly, no, you are utterly wrong, I was, infact a diplomat for my corp and pretty much 90% an industrialist. Main reason for this was that due to a crap internet connection (And a crap pc) any fleet battle of more than 10 ships = lag death for me, so I could barely engage in PVP at all. Hell, even some of the missions that had 50+ ships in them were hard for me to do because of my crap PC.
Thus, in summary, I find 'customising' my ship to be both against the spirit of the genre, and also, a waste of time as we will totally forget about it after using the ship for more than a few days.
HOWEVER - if the customisation affects the way the ship handels/ flying/ fights and would be recognisable to other pilots, then yes - it makes perfect sense (EG a large portion of the saucer section is taken up by a science lab and this is visable from the outside, then great, conversely if you have set your ship up for combat at you have torpedo tubes comming out the wazzu then id expect to see that on the ship model).
I can't see how Cryptic would have earned such a reputation for customization, if no one actually cared about it.
Having said that, I had hoped that changing something about my ship might alter its performance in some way. Like maybe one set of nacelles gives the ship a higher top speed, while another provides a higher sustainable cruising speed.
Or a simpler example, pick smaller components for reduced mass resulting in better acceleration/agility, or pick larger components for increased storage space and maybe room for a bigger warp core.
I mean, there has to be some kind of logic behind ship design right?

Especially EVE online. If they take the best golden nuggets of that game, they've got a winner.

I disagree completely. From the screenshots I've seen, the ships could look significantly different so as to be a "refit" style of vessel, for example, like the Enterprise in Star Trek The Motion Picture. In that film the Enterprise looked entirely different from what it looked like during the TV series. Cryptic would essentially be allowing us to create our own "refit" ships. One exception is that they would be allowing us the refit our warp nacelles and saucer section separately.
Also, you must keep in mind that this game is made by Cryptic and thus we have to take their past games into account. City of Heroes/Villains has amazing character and base customization. These activities don't lend themselves to merely "four hours" of gameplay. The character creator on CoH/V lends itself to countless hours of customization in and of itself and could be released as a stand alone game.
We also won't just have one starship for our entire careers, if we have eight ships total, then that's eight ships we'll get to customize. And even if starship customization isn't your cup of tea, there will be lots of players (like me) who will have lots of fun customizing our starships. We know that it'll be in the game, so really there's no use worrying about it too much.

Good example. The 'sovereign' variant they have shown is a good example - the NX-91001 - thats a sovereign with minor modiifications and a new 'pod' between the engines - I have no issues with this. Its still recognisable for what it is.
Also - if you looked at two consitution class ships, pre and post refit, they still looked like each other, just and updated version. Same basic profile. So if I can fly a consititution class ship, but its updated so I have the option to add more modern warp nacelles and the like - I also dont have an issue with this, or as you described it, having different era warp nacelles to the saucer option.
What people are describing here is far different - the ability to take practically any design and ship bits around, just at different sizes of ships. Me no like!
Also, you must keep in mind that this game is made by Cryptic and thus we have to take their past games into account. City of Heroes/Villains has amazing character and base customization. Yea... Thats the bit where I will just click 'next' 'next' ' next' - for what ever reason, it has no interrest for me. Evidentally im not sane ;). For me, if it doesnt have an ingame effect, i just cant see the point. IF the exact placing of a phaser bank defines the arc of fire of that phaser, or the angle of the warp nacelles or the type chosen will affect the speed, duration or whatever - then great, ill spend hours getting it just right.
We also won't just have one starship for our entire careers, if we have eight ships total, then that's eight ships we'll get to customize. Fair enough - I cant stand the SIMS, but I know lots of people worry about exactly what wall paper they put up and how they dress. All I worried about was making sure they didnt pass out on the floor or wet themselves! So long as I get the chance to fly an Akira, a Defiant, a Galaxy class ship - then everyone else can knock themselves out making their own versions and we can all be happy.
