I agree, we need more Klingon tidbits!
As for the screenies, this shot (http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/14270158/star-trek-online/images/star-trek-online-20090220050105551.html) for me is quite breathtaking.
As for the first one, could that be in a docking bay or factory maybe?

This is a freighter. It was known as the "Gourmall (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/en/images/8/8e/Groumall_and_bop2.jpg)" and commanded by a disgraced Gul Dukat in the episode Return to Grace (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Return_to_Grace_(episode)).
The Gourmall model was later redressed and used quite frequently (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Unnamed_Groumall_type_starships).
So, this is the first peek of a Cardassian starship in-game. Of course, this model has some modifications.

Quick reactions....
1. Cargo bay/laboratory
Nice. The lighting is excellent in this image; it really sets a mood when applied to the high level of structural detail.
Plus the table in the middle looks like it can be repurposed into a futuristic eight-hole pool table.
Which is nice.
2. Cargo ship
My honest reaction here is that the background is more exciting than the ship, which is probably not the reaction you want from players. (Or maybe it is, for the Briarpatch?)
The rendered appearance of the cargo ship, while it's probably the Groumall-type Cardassian freighter, just does not say "Star Trek" to me. If we were talking about a generic science fiction MMORPG, I'd still gripe that the ship's appearance is too "flat." But this supposed to be a Star Trek MMORPG, and as such that ship doesn't have the glossy qualities (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Image:CardassianTransport.jpg) that are a hallmark of starship in the Star Trek universe.
The background is definitely interesting, though. Mmmm... space donuts....
3. Miranda in a debris field
NICE. Flatfingers like.
I'm still not seeing the glossy look that ships in the Star Trek universe should have. (Just my opinion there, but I think it's a pretty well-supported opinion.) That said, the lighting on this ship is better than that of any other ship I've seen so far.
Part of the reason for this may be the relative sparseness of local space in this picture -- there's not nearly as much of the pretty "space stuff" floating around here as in other screencaps. Is it possible that there's a setting for "ambient lighting" that could be toned down so that ships in relatively cluttered space don't get washed out by an ambient light effect, but are lit (like the ship in this image) only by a single key light (presumably from the nearest star)?
That, plus more specular reflection for a glossy look, would significantly increase my satisfaction with the appearance of the ships of Star Trek Online as communicating the feeling of being in the unique and distinctive Star Trek universe.
One other request: I would expect the ambient light on this ship to be redder to reflect (literally) the color of the light reflected from the nearby planet. The blue tone on the ship is pretty, but it's wrong for the lighting environment in which it's set.
All that said, I like this image very much. Not only is the ship approaching nice-to-look-at, the debris and the odd formations on the planet suggest interesting stories to be told. Yay for that!
(One other small note: take a close look at that blue star in the upper right-hand corner: it's got diffraction spikes! Diffraction spikes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffraction_spike) like these (http://ccarboni.home.att.net/Trapezium_Region_Spikes.jpg) are an imaging artifact that is sometimes deliberately added to astrophotographs to enhance the beauty of bright point stars. As seen in the Miranda image, it's a very pretty effect. Some artist is paying attention to the details, and I for one really appreciate it.)
4. Ground location
Let's see... Klingon architecture... snow planet... ah. It's Rura Penthe (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Rura_Penthe), isn't it? :)
A little too bright, perhaps, but that's quibbling. Something I do like is that the LOD is pretty good even out to what appears to be a decent range. I hope we'll be able to set that level as players on our clients in the actual game; I like being able to see everything as far out as possible.
Incidentally, I notice that there are absolutely no UI elements displayed in this image (or any of the others). ;) So when will we get a peek at that?
...
Overall, a quite nice collection of new images. Thanks!

The avatar really comes to life in that screen shot. In comparison to previous screen shots with avatars, this one has way much better graphics technique. Up till now I was worried about those rubbery avatar uniforms, however something needs to be done with them too. I get that fantastic look that Cryptic is aiming for but can't you apply the same technique to all uniforms?
In any case the screen shots are amazing and make me very excited. The game goes in the right direction. Thanks Awen.

02-20-2009, 10:27 PM
Wow, graphics are better in every screenshots, I really like the details on the ground pic.
About the (space station?) shot, I like it, but the design don't look Federation or Klingon at all, maybe it's a neutral ship/station where players from both factions can meet?
The background is definitely interesting, though. Mmmm... space donuts....
Lol, sadly I think the same thing when I first see that one.

My honest reaction here is that the background is more exciting than the ship, which is probably not the reaction you want from players. (Or maybe it is, for the Briarpatch?)
I must agree here. The backgrounds and ambiance feels good, but this ship, http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/14270158/star-trek-online/images/star-trek-online-20090129112518617.html looks sorta like a toy model that blew a fart on a moon and left in a hurry judging by the vapor trails.
I'm not trying to knock the art department. I think they are doing a fine job. But can we get just a smidgen of attention back toward the ship textures?
Texturing can be awesome. Paint some more glowy windows, etc. and the ships could appear more alive! We will see planets by the hundreds (I assume), but we will have to look at our ship 24/7.
Don't get me wrong. I like the game, the concept, the design, and the art, up to this point; and I love these new screenies; but maybe, just maybe, some new focus on ship textures?

02-20-2009, 11:47 PM
My first impressions. Nice. The "Freighter" looks very similar to a mining ship or cargo ship from EVE and not similar to anything really recognisable from Trek. But It's not an issue for me as it is probably how a mining/cargo vessel would need to look.
(Watch someone tell me its a XXXXXX class ship from Episode 49 of TOS or some such)
Edit: I just saw that someone identified it earlier in the thread already, lmao. For my 2p it doesn't have to be "glossy" it has to fit in with the overall look for the game. The game is looking good from what I've seen so far.
Powerhelm
02-21-2009, 12:14 AM
Yeah I agree on the gloss part not being needed, I think it appears more as a staple in Trek due in large part to the use of models and time constraints as far as texturing them goes, Ships that are in space for long periods I doubt will be that glossy anyway. I actually prefer the less gloss look. Also look at the motion pictures and they too have less gloss than the TV shows, especially the later movies...

I think it is right that they only show us these generic images. Yes there will be ships, we will visit planets with buildings and we will wear clothes. There will be, some of us will be Klingons. I know everyone is eager to see everything now, but we must retain the biggest surprises for playing the game. There should be places we need to discover for ourselves as explorers in game. So to everyone who feels they didnt see enough, it is best that we only see glimpses of possibilities so that when we play the game there are lots of surprises left to enjoy and discover.

Very fair point, about console version.
What resolution etc. are these and will a console (presumably PS3?) be able to generate these?
If its doable I may go with console as 1080p on 50" TV has to look sweet.

wow. these are some of the best ones yet. I mean, let me go through 'em one by one:
1st: nice detail, good overall view. wish I knew something about to the guy in the backdrop. looks like a nice place to confront a mad scientist.
2nd: pretty tough, good-looking ship. nice colours, gret detail on the asteroids. planet (I'm guessing borg or extremely industrialzed) reminds me of coruscant in star wars.
3rd: amazing! I love the cargo ship! and the donut asteroid actually looks awesome. if this is in fact the briar patch (which I always thought was red) I'm gonna go and try and pick a fight with the son'a or something just to see that.
4th: my favourite from this selection. love the buildings, love the environment, and LOVE the cold weather uniform, although it makes the officer look like a leafs fan.
5th: in terms of ship development, I now feel like we're getting somewhere. the previous Klingon ship was an older class, but his one has been revamped and upholstered and whatnot. it looks like a new ship. also, I can see that crytic is putting alot of effort into each environment. looking at this location, one can tell it is the same one mentioned in at least three other screenshots from other selections. good job!
6th: possibly the sickest-looking scout ship I have ever seen. it is definitely the twenty-fifth century version of a lamborghini, and I salute cryptic for coming up with it.
7th: I love the sleekness like powerful design of the vessel. definitely on my list of favourites. also, I wonder what the story is for those little bits of blue debris in the background...

I don't mean to sound like a nowitall, but Stargazers have been seen. Picard's ship the stargazer was, well, a stargazer, and it is seen in The Battle. Also, the same ship appears on the covers of several of the stargazer books by michael jan friedman.

Nice screenshots. My only criticism is for the snow planet image: I don't understand why replacing the big glowing red panels on klingon buildings with big orange ones constitutes an improvement. Can't buildings just be buildings without glowing lines and panels all over the place?
Keep in mind that being conservative with glowing things and flashy design elements gives them more value, because the player is not being constantly bombarded by it. I think most people are ok with the stylized art direction; but excessive use of bright colours and glowing things will make the game look like World of Warcraft.

The screenshots were lovely.
My only concern is that this is the second time a 3rd party website has screenshots, that were not on the website, that has been linked in an offical Dev post, Any chance you could update your own website first? for those who's PC's can't access IGN for whatever reasons?

Oh, I can, I just remembered reading that someone wasn't able to at their work's PC, where as they can access STO's website, so inbrief, 'STO is more accessable to others then IGN', would be alot easier for fans

This is my own concern, why is it that we don't see this on the main website as well why aren't we seeing any new images going out to smaller sites? Are they simply not contacting Cryptic or is there some type of favoritism going on? Please dont take it the wrong way, however i keep seeing this going to other and more corp owned websites.

I don't mean to sound like a nowitall, but Stargazers have been seen. Picard's ship the stargazer was, well, a stargazer, and it is seen in The Battle. Also, the same ship appears on the covers of several of the stargazer books by michael jan friedman.
that was the USS Stargazer a constelation class ship. there is a new class created by Cryptic called the Stargazer class.

Lovely - but every space shot is yellow or pink or blue - I hope those are just the "scenic" shots, space is largely a massive amount of nothing, so it's black with little white spots. Just a friendly reminder.
Keep up the great work guys.

I'm having trouble with the way the architects of those (Klingon?) buildings throw energy around.. whats with the extra light sources on the outside of those buildings?
( I know I know, only 2 exterior building screen shots, too soon to judge)
Keep up the hard work!

The reason is marketing. They agree to post screenshots if they're the only ones who have them. Exclusive shots mean traffic, which means revenue.

I do kinda wish that they would at least update the website with a "hey look we just gave IGN some exclusive screen shots check them out" etc. They gave a plug for a few things, but not everything, so it half turns into a tresure hunt to keep up with the interviews/q&a's/other media which I kinda find silly.
I understand why they give exclusive media, but they should at least take the time to tell their fan base where it is. Of course maybe were seeing a new trend of them at least telling us on the forums, the past two exclusive content releases were stated here, lets hope that keeps going.

OH>>>>>>MY>>>>>>GOD!!!!!
My biggest worry currently is maintiaing my sanity until the game is released. So far I have been able to keep distracted by building mine and my wifes new PC's for the game, playing a lot of SFB ST:EF, and SFC and watching a lot of Trek reruns.
I'm really getting into Enterprise now.....and I feel guilty I didn't give it a proper shot when it was on the air.

Me likey, hey Mikey!
Seriously, these are looking pretty sharp. I wonder if we will be able to actually land on the planet manually or will it just go to a loading screen when our ship gets close to it? Personally, I would love to be able to set her down gently myself. ;)

I think the preferred word amongst guys in my clan/guild/fleet is that we are "Jonesin' for it". I looked up the meaning because being English it wasn't a familiar term. It's spot on and I too am Jonesin' for the release.

I watched all of Enterprise a couple of months back. I was really surprised at how good it was after being cut down in its prime.

I realize this is a bit unfair given that we've seen so few interior screenshots (2?), but when I saw the new interior shot at IGN, the FIRST thing I thought was "oh no, please not another generic warehouse" style game!
Perhaps I thought this because of Cryptic's history with CoH/CoV where just about every single mission in the game takes place in an office building, warehouse, or cave that all look pretty much exactly the same. They all had the same hallways (even if SOMETIMES in slightly different places), they all had the same plants and same vending machines (even if SOMETIMES in slightly different place) ... but overall ... it was always the same office/warehouse you ran the last 250 missions in.
Like I said, I realize we've only seen like 2 interiors ... but please cryptic .. PLEASE don't do another game where every single non-faction interior looks like its just a shuffle of "generic interior" assets.
We shouldn't see the same 'ramps' and 'workstations' in every single interior ... and only moved around a bit.
Like I said, I'm not saying they are doing this, but I am saying they have done it before in other MMOs .... and I can practically SEE my controller running up the ramp in this STO screenshot rooting a bunch of Rikti.

Personally, I think the Miranda zooming out from the planetoid (Image 9 I think?) looks absolutely terrible. TBH it looks more like colored concept art than a screenshot...way too cartoony/sloppy - the engine trail, the ship model, the planetoid...
...but most of the images look great. I especially like this new batch, particularly the Bird of Prey and the one of the Miranda variant. I have to say the latter looks way better than that Sacagawea piece of garbage that Perpetual designed. Looked like a freakin' sci-fi rowboat with warp nacelles.
These screens combined with the latest Ask Cryptic have renewed my enthusiasm, as if it needed renewing!

No, really. I think these shots are great and I hope they alay the fears of graphics being 'cartoony'. Top rate IMHO.

I see that the starship design direction is.... rehashing all current ship designs....
well. I suppose in Star Trek many ship models were reused for budget reasons XD Like the cardassian then klingon and now whatever it is freighter there.
