What is the currency going to be? The Earth has no form of currency and I haven't heard of Federation Credits. Not to mention what the Klingon will have, Blood wine?

Here is what we know thus far:

The Federation may have grown beyond the need for money within itself, but the rest of the galaxy hasn’t. Even within the Federation there is a sense of credits: transporter credits and replicator credits. You can’t simply decide one day that you want a starship and then get one, you have to have enough credits for that. Outside of the Federation, there’s a thriving galactic economy that uses gold pressed latinum. You, as a Starfleet officer, will participate in that economy on behalf of the Federation. As for cross faction trading – we’re looking into how black markets might fit into the game.

I think perhaps that the term "credit" has thrown everyone away from it's original meaning.

"Even within the Federation there is a sense of credits: transporter credits and replicator credits."

A credit isn't always a unit of currency, for instance if I'm in school and I have a project due, I get credit for turning it in on time. A credit in this sense is just an acknowledgement of work I have completed. Try this wording and see if it seems a little better...

Transporter Privileges or Replicator Privileges....:)

There is a discussion here about it: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=14076

Well...

There have been several threads on In-Game Currency options and we really have no idea what will be used in the game at this time... Credits, Latinum, supplies, etc...

...and "Federation Credits" have been mentioned in one form or another in the various Star Trek series, just not very often. Credits are used within the Federation and Gold-Pressed Latinum is used when dealing with outside races.

I believe Beverly Crusher mentions something about "her account" early on in the "Encounter at FarPoint" episode, just to name an instance. ;)

EDIT

Damn Loekii, beat me to it. :D

If Federation Credits are used, then I am to assume the Klingons will have their own form of currency. That being the case, will the two currencies ever be traded against one another. Such as a neutral trading post, similar to the one in WoW's Gadgetzan.

Hmmm..... good question. I don't know if a Klingon system of currency has ever been mentioned, or if they just use Latinum.

To be honest, I'd just prefer if the game just used Gold Pressed Latinum, instead of complicating it by have two or three differeny currencies that you have to trade. The economy system for Star Trek Online will just be a necessary evil for me to upgrade my ships with the best tech.

I certainly hope not. Infact, I hope they cannot be traded in the same faction. They are not currency as Gozer stated, but more like 'influence' that you save up and spend on customizing your ships from Command - and not players.

Klingons do indeed have their own currency, the Darsek. It gets mentioned even less than the federation credit though. I personally hope if cryptic is going with federation credits that they'd go with darseks for klingons before some ferengi currency.

Though if they do want it simple, i'd agree that it should be gold pressed latinum as thats what most everyone identifies with as a currency used in trek.

Wow... you're right, the Darsek was only mentioned in two episodes according to Memory Alpha (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Darsek)

I learn something everyday :p

There are a number of different currencies in Star Trek.

For example, we have litas (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Lita), isiks (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Isik), diraks (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Dirak), and quatloos (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Quatloo).
