Well really it isn't the smartest move to accept a pre-order from some random website when every other website on our net (including this one) says that they haven't got an accepted release date. Good luck getting your game! (insert sarcasm where necessary, thanks for reading)

I actually read the gamestop site to have a more deep laugh since we all know what release date and pre orders on gamestop are worth.

Ohhh .. I dunno about that . I would not just to any conclusions either way. You can also pre-order a Cehvrolet Camero ( I wouldn't mind having one) .. but you know the story behind that as well.

To tell you the truth I have more confidence in Cryptic producing STO than I do GM their Camero .

(BTW.. this is not intended to start something ugly... just that I would wait a bit ... like when Cryptic gives the green light !)

I wouldn't call this a scam... I mean, if the OP wants to put some money down on the sometime-in-the-future release of STO and try to get a copy on release day, why stop him? :)
As much as I'd rather go somewhere else other than Gamestop to buy my games (namely, Target and Amazon.com), they do have a somewhat flexible system on preordering. At least, they do from what I remember. I remember preordering Zelda: Wind Waker nearly 2 years before it came out... and when I produced the receipt to pick up the game, about 80% of it was no longer readable (receipt ink had faded)... but they took it!

The dudes at my local gamestop are always cool, but I don't do the $5 thingie. When it has a release date I go down and prepay the whole thing, and then I am first in line to pickup. (WoW)

They actually had a pretty fun party for the last expansion too. People got dressed up and everything.

I had preordered Starcraft 2 back in June of 2008 with a release date of december. So after december rolled around, I said "F*" it and unordered, especially since not only was the release date inaccurate, BUT it wasn't even starcraft 2 anymore, it was Sons of Liberty.

Sooo....

Release dates don't exist until the developer says so.

You mean until the publisher says so. :) Hopefully if they're nice they let the developer have input on that, but it doesn't always happen that way.

You guys are all mean. Who cares if he wants to preorder it now?

He'll get it whenever it ships, and that's that. It's not a scam.

He can cancel or cancel and order the collector's edition or whatever he wants to do. Maybe he was just excited about the game, you ever think of that?

I'm gonna Pre-order Duke Nukem Forever soon...... Because it's Duke, and there's something symbolic about it.

So I can understand the OP, why not show your commitment to the geek at Gamestop? It sure won't hurt the games image any if we all grab a little reservation.

Now the evil that is Gamestop, that's another story. But it's not stopping me. In fact I might just get two :p

Lets hope the game is released by Decembet '09. That only gives us 3 years to play before the end of the world on Dec 21, 2012.

Pre orders are a good thing. When EB/Gamestop get alot of pre-orders they believe the game is going to be huge, so they order more copys to sell in the stores. This way when the non-pre orderers go to get it there will be more copys for them to buy. (I used to work for EB). Also as the 100 other threads talk about pre-orders, nothing is set in stone. EB/Gamestop just pull a date from the air and put it down so we can pre-order it.

Another up side for pre-orders is that usually there is a "Bonus" for pre-ordering. Sometimes its an item that gives you a small bonus, it could be a cosmetic thing, or some times it is early access to the beta.

There are 100 other pots about this though...

Gamestop is the biggest retailer of video games in the US, so it is probably not a scam unless they are going to shut down there 3 billion dollar a year revenue to scam people out of STO.

The amount of preorders tell investors/advertisers how well the game is going to do. So by preordering it you are promoting STO.

Elrath
02-11-2009, 05:01 AM
As much as I would like to see a date set up for STO to be released, I am putting more stock on the website of STO announcing a release date as oppose to Gamestop. They missed it on Pirates of the Burning Sea and Star Gate Worlds. With the later not even in closed beta and as announced on mmo sites as well as mmoreport star gate worlds was cutting their staff before closed beta starts?

**Shurg** just my input.

Wow for the large part you guys are jerks. This poor fellow was just excited he could put down some money for STO. Whats wrong with that ?

Gamestop is not a bad company either. They have very friendly nerd guys/girls behind the counter that love to chat games, which you won't likely get that at Walmart, Best Buy, Fry's Electronics or other places. Yes I would much rather buy a game electronically, but do also buy physical games, for certain features like collectors editions that come with physical gifts like Fallout 3 (lunchbox), cloth maps, soundtracks, behind the scene dvds that you can't get with downloaded copies.

Also I agree with preordering being a great way to let the stores know that you are promoting the game and are excited about it.

Now about Gamestop being con-artists or trying to rip the guy out of his 5 bucks, this is just ridiculous. Gamestop is one of the premier gaming outlets and have better things to do then take a guys 5 bucks for nothing. I have preordered many times months and months ahead of the games release and they have always giving me the game, even when I lost my receipt they looked me up in the system and still gave me my 5 dollar credit.

So I say more power to the guy that got the preorder down! Its still a long time to wait for a game I agree with that. But I was excited to see that Gamestop had a date for STO even though its not set in stone, its still exciting to see. But don't give up your hopes that its going to be released on that date, as it more then likely will not be. :D

Okay im done with my ranting. Thanks for listening.

I pre ordered it as well from Gamestop on Sunday. Yes I know we have a ways to go but I still wanted my name to be in the computer for a copy. I also pre ordered because many MMO games I have seen on the website get a special early beta access. I'm not saying that will be the case for STO but I took a shot. If by any chance Cryptic announces a special collectors edition, for Best Buy or Target versions of the game i'll cancel and go buy it there.

I shop at Game stop and they are good and reliable source for pre-order games. I have an Xbox 360 and did a lot of pre-orders with them and they treated me great! Their not frauds or take your money and run. If they were like that wouldnt they be out of business by now? I will be going to my Game stop store and put my money down on STO and dont care how long it takes to get it because Game stop got a good rep in honoring pre-orders...Period!!!

Not sure why people pre-order so early. I always pre-order like 5 days before release that way you still are garunteed a copy on release over others who didnt.

well i never played 69.99 i only placed 5 dollar bill down for a pre order

Which is fine. You have your receipt and will be placed on the pre-order list. The release date is not needed to preorder, and $5.00 is the normal fee. Most people that venture outside their basement tend to understand that is how it works. Those that are saying you got scammed should be ignored, as they are incorrect.

If Amazon doesn't have a pre-order option for a game, it doesn't exist, or so my experience has shown me... I believe it has something to do with Amazon not publishing a release date or pre order availability unless said distribution compnay has published an official and verifiable release date due to legality and reliability concerns.

Not necessarrily. I used to work for GameStop and I had Mass Effect, Too Human, and Guitar Hero 3 on pre-order at least a year before it's release.

Just because GameStop is taking a reservation for the game doesn't mean it's coming out soon.

Im not one for pre orders except for games that offer nice bonuses (like special discs or in game content) or games that may not be available otherwise. Normally I just walk in on release day and buy it.

The difference is STO will be pc game, I havent bought a pc game in ages.

Nickinaround
02-14-2009, 03:12 AM
Okay a couple things. Pre-orders are for the game and can be put towards the CE edition or the regular edition. So if they do come out with a CE and you have put 5 dollar preorder for the game in general, they will ask what edition you want when you go in. You can always transfer your preorder to the CE.

Also if they start offering pre-order deals and you have already preordered it you will get the deal automatically. Most of the retailers have the same pre-order deals. Just look at Empire: Total War, Gamestop.com, STEAM, and Best Buy all offer the Rome Total War Gold Edition when your preorder the game. So its not like just one retailer or STO will be letting ONLY those that preorder at a certain place get the extra.

Ya think they could put some sort of pic on it.

There is no pic yet which is the point. Cryptic haven't made a picture for it yet. The pre-order system is not actually given as a blessing by game developers. They buy the games to fit the stock they have pre-ordered from us.
