In another thread someone was suggesting "an event that means everyone has to pool their efforts and come together"

And, frankly, I can't think of anything that could do this except a portal opening and a few billion Species 8472 coming out of it.

If they don't add this to the game - it'll be a HUGE loss :)

Just a suggestion!

its an idea, a possible one which has been suggested a few times, but frankly there are better races out there to do that sort of thing with (Borg for example) :D plus didnt Voyager make peace with 8472? so they wouldent have a real reason to invase

Voyager didn't so much "make peace" with Species 8472 as demonstrate a weapon against which they had no natural defense - in any case, I agree that we probably won't see them again.

That idea of an "everybody band together" event a-la the Dominion War has merit though - but with the Borg somewhat under control (see STO Trailer), the Dominion defeated, and Species 8472 hiding in fear, the only potential I could see would be some new, unannouced race joining up with the unstable Romulans to menace the quadrant. Seeing the effect the Dominion War had on the Alpha Quadrant, I can't exactly say I'm looking forwards to this...but it would make life somewhat more "interesting."

In a sense, Species 8472 is perfect for a World Event:

They travel through a set of dimensions separate from our own, allowing them to pop up as if out of nowhere, so people will have to be on their guard and be prepared to assemble quickly.
Meanwhile, there can be a back story about them infiltrating Starfleet Command or the KDF headquarters on Ty'Gokor or the like; a story that players can read on the STO website to provide some context to the battles they're fighting.
At the end of the event, Cryptic (or the ones they put in charge of such things) can post a video on the main site (possibly rendered or live action, but probably filmed in-game and creatively edited) in which the game's hero ship(s) (the new Enterprise, the USS Perpetual, the USS Fabulous, or the like) go into liquid space and confront Species 8472, and it will be epic (http://rikerdidit.ytmnd.com/).

I prefer the Borg, as I've always thought of Species 8472 as rather unimaginative killing machines... ...but that just means I'm less picky about how they're used then I am when it comes to, say, the Borg ;)

no there was another episode after that where Species 8472 had built a giant starbase in the Delta Quadrent and when Voyager went to investiage it and beamed aboard they found a giant infiltration training based around Starfleet Academy and basically at the end Janeway convinced them that the Federation was no threat to them and Species 8472.

Concerned about the threat posed by humanity, Species 8472 builds 13 "terraspheres" in the Delta Quadrant and recreates Starfleet Academy within as a staging ground for an intelligence gathering mission on Earth. The plan is uncovered by Voyager and peace talks commence. Voyager convinces 8472, led by an individual posing as Boothby, that the Federation has no quarrel with them - by that point, it had been learned that the Borg themselves started the war between the two species by invading fluidic space to assimilate the superior technology of Species 8472. from "in the flesh" season 5 episode 4 of Voyager :p

the only problem is Janeway gave them the plans for the nanoprobe weapons and the "truce" was mainly between that group of 8472 and Voyager... I believe the one pretending to be Boothby mentioned he would tell his superiors about it but couldn't guarantee anything. So if they do return there might not be any defense against them... lol be a good way to end the game when the time comes... 8472 comes in and wipesout everything...
