View Full Version : Will you roleplay?

Since there is a possibility of a single server I would like to know how many people want to chose the more hardcore style of gaming?
I'm not sure for myself, probably not but there just might be a night when I meet some nice people who can tolerate my grammar/spelling fiasco. I will read every quest text to the letter and even hit the full stop in the middle of nowhere just to have a look at the stars but I believe that's it for the most of the time.

I'd like to see ppl role-play I think it adds to a game and makes it fun, just as long as ppl don't talk just to hear them self role-play. I would role-play more in games if I typed more than 20 wpm and could spell and go out of character every once and a while and not get reprimanded :)

I can say for sure that I'm going to roleplay. It makes me a little sad that there wont be any chance of having roleplay servers, i made a serious mistake on warcraft not joining one in the first place. but even so the only thing that stopped me from roleplaying in that game the past 4+ years (despite being the only roleplayer in my old guild, or on the server) was quitting the game.

I hope to see some people roleplay in the different channels. Personally, I'm just not that into it.
For me it is more important that the whole Star Trek atmosphere won't be destroyed by people who named themself "KillaNoob" or "Jean-Luc Picard" e.g.
But I know it will happen and even the GMs will tolerate it. That's the way it is in LOTRO, WoW and many other MMORPGs and it won't be different in STO.

Roleplayes are easy to gank.
In WoW they always run around in PvP territory jut talking to each other.
As such easy ganking material: I hope we have them in this game.

What is ganking? If things are done to Cryptics standard quite possible. If Atari level is put forth, then most likely not.

Possibly - at least with one of my characters - depends on the kind of fleet I get into.

As much as I would like to roleplay... I probably won't be doing it in a video game. I need to see the emotion in the other players to actually get into the role.
I think i'll keep my roleplaying in the paper and dice realm :D

I will probably role play, but not in the sense that seems to be norm. Form what I'm reading in this thread, it seems that traditional RP is focused on speech. I'll be role playing a Starfleet officer's actions. But I won't be so deep in RP that I'll feign ignorance at non-Trek topics.
My goal for role play is to make the game more immersive for fellow players by emulating actions that one might expect from a Starfleet officer. For instance, I'll gladly offer other players assistance when they send out distress calls. I'll warn Klingon vessels to leave the area before engaging in battle (except during wartime offensives).
So I'll RP to an extent, just not as deeply as traditional RPers seem to go.

I am not the RP type. I like have fun in MMOs and by having fun I mean I like to crack jokes, say outlandish things and just do random crazy things. I play LOTRO at the moment and I run into RPers all the time and they just make me laugh, but I don't have anything against them. If Rping is your thing then have at it, but if you happen to run across me in STO while RPing, just be ready because I might just pick on you :)

You didn't make a mistake, roleplaying servers are just PvE-Servers with another name. People who knew the setting and tried to roleplay were actually attacked by other players. I tried to compromise a few weeks and gave it up after a month. For the rest roleplaying consisted of getting their characters so drunk that they saw pink elephants and dancing half-naked on tables.....

Personally, I can't really enjoy a MMOG without role-playing; to me, the most important role of MMOGs is to provide one with an online world that one wants to experience and interact with.
I can't wait to play as a noble Starfleet Officer!

I did text-based RPing for years back in the late 90's on AOL (back before AOL was the official ISP of stupid people). I can't get into it in MMOs though. Just doesn't work for me.

I do know that there are several major groups of ST RPG players (The Decipher PnP game) And the Starfleet International fan club that are planning on Role Playing in game....their biggest concern is seperating themselves from the freaks and pedobears left over from the SWG Twilek Sex Slave guilds.

I'll roleplay.
WoW crushed my roleplayer spirit, knocking it over the head, mugging it for all it's worth then laying the boot in until it was unconscious. but LotRo picked it right back up and dusted it off, giving it a shower, a new set of clothes and several hundred dollar bills. I'm amazed at how different those two communities are. How much i roleplay will likely depend on how mature the rest of the playerbase is about it. If I know many of my fellow trekkies I should be fine for the most part like i was in lotro.

Most likely my extent of roleplay will be to acknowledge someone who out ranks me with a "Sir". If everyone did this it would certainly help to maintain that Starfleet/Klingon military feel.

im pretty much in the same boat as SiskoBell here.
although that isnt to say i wouldent RP more in-depth when amongst a few people RP'ing their hearts away (dont want to ruin it for them you see)

I, myself, am still holding out hope for an RP server that I will be able to join even if nothing more then a unofficial official RP server. RPing in the ST universe is the main thing I am looking forward to with STO.
If however we get stuck with a single server then no I will not be RPing.

Well that is the point of the RPG in MMORPG ;)
I always read the entire text of every quest of mission. Makes the immersion into the world so much better. I think one reason players get so bored so quickly in games is they skip to "killl this" . They don't bother with learning about the virtual world they are playing in. Then after they've blown thru everything in a short period of time they complain of boredom. That's the type of player that needs to stcik with single player games because the whole point of MMORPGs was to immerse yourself in a gaming world.

Hopefully there'll be some sort of "Captain's Log" feature in STO... ...but if not, I guess I'll probably get a journal to keep on my desktop when I play, or install some sort of dictaphone application to run in the background.

speaking of all this "Well that is the point of the RPG in MMORPG ;)" i never understood the reason why people dont want to team up or group with other people  i mean heck it is a Massivly Multiplayer Online <insert genre> whats the point in playing a MMO if your not going to play with other people??
I never roleplay on purpose; I just kinda fall into it from time to time.
Just depends on how immersive I'm finding the game at the time, and what the people I'm with are doing (if they have spent the last hour talking about football and then ask me where I'm from, I tend to assume they mean what country, rather than what planet).
It can be a lot of fun when everyone is into it; but if it's just me I would feel like an idiot.

I RP all the time I get a chance to. It is fun and adds to the game. And yeah I like to just stop sometimes and look at the backgrounds.

I'd be careful on doing that. It can be seen as greifing. The same as I would not disrespect you for not rp-ing, I would like the same courtesy of you not coming up and ruining my gameplay by disrespecting me by making fun of how I choose to enjoy the game.
And do you really think we don't go OOC sometimes? If I am in a group and can plainly see they don't RP, I don't either. It's RESPECT.

According to Cryptic this game was supposed to be like epsiodes of Star Trek, so a Captain
s log makes sense here. As a long time fan of trek , a captains log would be bad *ss! Thou hopefully I won't be writing too much of this...
Captain's Log Stardate 3454.2
Ran into some starfleet crrewmen on the outer edge of the quadrant who seem to be afflicted with a griefing disease. They seem to have a very unusual desire to spam hateful remarks to random ships and follow them like klingon lapdogs all over space...

That happened to me recently on WOW and I'm playing on a RP server. Don't know that their major malfunction was, but they followed me for half a map spamming gibberish that no computer could even comprehend. Some players DESPERATLY need some education, because their words are so garbled I can't understand them. I finally just transported away. I sincerely hope those type of players stay in WOW or SWG(a once mature community now infested with ignorant morons)

I abide by the Prime Directive, and all Starfleet regulations
I Feed the Hungry, I bring the sick medicines
I vanquish those whom would do harm to others.
I am a Federation Captain
So whats to RP?

What you are doing is fine for RPing - staying in the character of what a Federation captain would do.
What others are speak of is actually becoming their character ... what quirks do they have? accent? favourite place to travel to? hatred of certain races? Actually talking and thinking like their character and not putting anything of their real-life personae (unless they want to) into it.

People play these games for different reasons.
Other forms of entertainment vary little in that regard as well.
You can go to a movie with a friend. Afterwards, your friend thought it rocked because of the amazing action sequences and use of CGI. You were disappointed because the character development was laughable and the plot, all but non-existant.
Different strokes for different folks.
And a lot is based on expectations of the individual. However, the person at the helm of the project has to know going in they're not going to please everyone.
The point of a game is to be an entertaining diversion for the player. If you find entertainment in immersing yourself into your character and the virtual world the MMO offers, that's great for you. If another person simply enjoys the game play mechanics and loves grouping up with their friends/guildmates to go thrash some PvE mobs or fellow PvPers and not give a rat's backside about the lore, that's great for them. Neither is more valid than the other because you cannot define fun for anyone but yourself.

How can you not RP in the Star Trek universe?
Well, considering everyone has their own ship and there are no interiors except during missions, it doesn't seem like there will be very many opportunities for roleplaying at launch. Unless you consider a group of ships hanging around in space typing into the chat box roleplaying.

I'll definately RP at least lightly.
However before you look down at RPers be aware that some of them can play as well or better than you. I started a RP PvP guild in SWG that boasts some of the best PvPers out there, should they choose to abuse you.
I'm all for fun in a game and there are plenty of times when I like to just be normal (guild chat was always out of character) but if the situation or mood strikes me its really fun to engage in RP about the game, it makes it more real.
At the very least I intend to carry the flag for RP when I go into PvP. Bring it Klingon dogs! Today is a good day to die!

What is ganking?
Sucker punching, fighting unfairly or just plain old outnumbering. For example load ganking: killing someone as they are loading in.

I for one, have a vivid imagination and am a Trek Fan to the core. I have had alot of experience in MMORPG's (the RPG part stands for "role playing game" hint hint) with both the hardcore RP crowd that can tend to be elitist and condescending all the way over to the non rp "gank" types...I'm more of a moderate.
I will be roleplaying my character, a Captain within Starfleet. My actions will reflect as such as will my speech in game, however if someone attempts to contact me in an ooc fashion..depending on how it's done and what they are trying to say I will respond briefly with my response in OOC parentheses such as ((Hey man, welcome to the game. I'm a major Trek fan as well. Want to join me for a mission?)) .
I've never really been a snob but I do freely punch the ignore button each and every time I see spammers, trolls and other childish behaviour. I tend to stick with the folks who also enjoy rp.
Hope to see some of you out there.

I'm heading straight out and playing far and away. The homeworlds are cool and all, but I'm more for a lost in deep space exploration experience myself. It makes it that much more fun when you happen to run into someone in the sparsity of life in space.
