Finally, real character design options! I may not be the most diverse MMORPG player, but I know when someone has done their homework and made a good system for character creation.

I am concerned about the body customization though. It seemed there was only a set of generic bodies that could be chosen. Maybe I'm wrong, and they let you change the size and dimensions of the character's frame, but I didn't see much indication of that.

At any rate, no other Trek game has come this far, and I'm still looking forward to it!

Unless they limit our options by faction, (doesn't sound very cryptic) it seems likely that you can make a close copy of any opposing faction race.

No romulans either, suppose we can customize a vulcan template with ruffles/ridges on the forehead, or mimic the new romulans from the new movie.

I get the impression the Character Generator won't disappoint to many folks.
Just a matter of do you spend all day customizing your player, or click randomize and go.

I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. Garak may have been unique, in that he was Exiled and not affiliated with the Cardassian Union anymore, but everybody who looked at him still knew he was a Cardassian, and treated him in whatever fashion their own views on Cardassians dictated. Furthermore, physiologically he was no different than any other Cardassian. He had the same love of heat and hate of cold. The same "Stats" as it were. We dont know how the race system stats will work but I will use terminology from traditional MMOs, to better illustrate my point.

If I create my Cardassian as best I can with the tools available to me now, and then later Cryptic decides that the Cardassian exoskeleton gives an inherent Bonus to defense which did not occur to me when i made him, I want that bonus. Conversely, if they decide Cardassians have an inherent weakness to Cold-damage, but there was no way to represent that at the time of Launch, I want that penalty. I want a "proper" Cardassian that is physiologically treated like any other Cardassian in the game, get what I mean?

Also, it would be nice if any NPCs who hate Cardassians(I'm looking at you Bajorans) would look at my Cardassian, and respond accordingly.

not star wars...... sure the first trumpet rise sounds alot like williams, but the main theme is almost note for note SEAQUEST DSV !!!! they put it to different intraments but the melody is really close to the seaquest theme.

I completely agree! The music was EXACTLY ripped from star wars! There was NO variation! Please please please tell me you hit the guy who made that crappy piece of synthesized crap. The starting music was great though, it sounds straight from the movies I am guessing? On a nicer note, the customisation looks awesome! I think I might make a vulcan human hybrid...

Judging by where the cardassian appeared in the vid they'll be a preset race, so you likely won't have to create your own one.

at first I have to say that this video just looked awsome, I can´t wait, creating my own alien races. But the background music totally destroyed the feeling of watching a star trek video. By listening to that music, I couldn´t stop thinking of the klingon, taking out his lightsaber to attack the vulcan^^

Now id like to request you finish this up with a video for the stats page for custom characters. If i remember right that supposed to be customizable to.

As for the music, I agree that is not up to par with what i hope, you can take artistic lisense, but not get carried away plz, the origional track was always good. In defense though, i am a fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars, and i dont get the vibe of Starwars other than i few notes. I do agree with the Seaquest which seriously brings back memories. Kinda miss that show...

Well, I'm stoked now. At least about character generation. I still think there ought to be some "racial" modifiers for if a player chooses to be Human, Vulcan, Klingon, Romulan, etc, etc though.

But I guess this route really does give us the opportunity to play a Klingon in the Federation much like Worf if this is fully in the player's hands.

Well I just got one question- Whhheeeennnn? For more then 4 years now I have watched the attempt to get a mmp oline up and running. Both time the developers got some nice screen shots in and kept a lively post and news letter. i have been visiting this web sence it went back up on morp.com game list. I am sorry if this sounds negitive the work so far seems good I like it. The images are very nice good job to the progammers. The charactor vedio is cool besides that I would have to be able to play with it to tell u more. I just don't want to be told the game got scraped agian. Well good luck "break a leg"( all games have some puzzle and story line to them.)

I have to say that this is definitely one of the best updates about the game yet since we get to actually see the progress that is being made on the game, and it looks great! There was never any doubt in my mind that Cryptic Studios would do an excellent job with character creation and customization, and this video completely affirms my faith! Some of the content in this video is mind-blowing and I cannot wait until I am able to start creating my own characters with what looks to be a very comprehensive character generator. Thank you very much for providing this great update!

As for the character video, it was nice to see. Given that most players are likely to choose human/Vulcan/Klingon for their race, I hope there'll be enough customization choices within those recognizable races to insure that not every Klingon looks the same.

Speaking of which, I wonder... will it be possible to construct a Klingon with the appearance of one of the TOS-era Klingons still affected by the mutated human Augment genes?

Or have they all been "cured" (whether they wanted to be or not) by 2409?

Why yes it is. Cryptic is known for their high level of customization and this is no different. Notice how you can move facial details like scars around. That there is a level never seen before. At least not by me.

Why yes it is. Cryptic is known for their high level of customization and this is no different. Notice how you can move facial details like scars around. That there is a level never seen before. At least not by me.

Here's a unique caveat though: When we were customizing blueman and added a mustache over the already-present scar, iinm there should have been a gap where the mustache cannot grow through the scar tissue. This is, of course, IRL. Not a complaint Cryptic, just some really, really, really nerdy nitpickery.

Awesome work, would like to have seen more varied adjustments in facial structure like different head sizes, cheek fatness, and jawlines. You know some more defining features of the face that really set a characters face apart from anothers. After all, we will all be wearing uniforms. we need all the facial customization we can get!

I've always been (and remain) a bit of a character customization snob ... I believe this to be one of the most important parts of the game as a matter of fact. It's the players first event, first introduction to their character.

I guarantee when the game launches I will spend HOURS creating the perfect character before I let myself Iog in to see the universe I've been waiting for (for so long) for the first time ...

I have to say that with this short video, about 80% of concern for STOs character customization was blown right out the window. Well done.

I do still wonder about some things. Like how much customization WITHIN a single species will there be possible ... i.e is my only hope of NOT being a relatively cookie cutter human (a hand full hair styles/colors and eye colors, etc) going to be to add head ridges?

What about body type?

I have to say I nearly cheered when I saw the nose slider in effect ... allowing you to very granularly change the length of the nose (as well as, apparently, the prominence of the nose ridges that were added). If that level if customization exists for all the facial attributes I'm going to be very very very very happy. (think: eye size, eye separation, eye angle, mouth position, mouth width, ear size, ear position, etc etc etc etc)

Cryptic: a request / plea ... For those of us who will spend HOURS making our first character JUST PERFECT ... will you please let us choose a name (reserving it for our entrance into the universe) at the beginning of the character creation process even before we start playing with appearance? :)

Wow what for an amazing trailer, it looks really good to me and i like the different customization options a lot!
One question came into my mind when i saw the cardassian looking character in the trailer:

Will we get race-specific starships for each of the original races of the star trek universe?
For example, if i would choose a cardassian character, would i get a cardassian starship at the beginning of the game und get other cardassian ships later (Galor or Keldon class ships)? Or do we Cardassians have to fly in klingon starships :)?

Well I am thourghly happy, however, now I have so many more questions. If im in starfleet, and I decide I will be andorian, can I use there ships. Like an ally. Will all the other species ships that are part of starfleet be included, and the same for the klingons. Will you see a fleet of combined arms, like something out of DS9? I would love for this to be true, moreover, I wont be hating you for just having starfleet ships, its not the ship, its the relationship you start with it. As long as Cryptic can deliver on what it's promising in the video, it's great that so many people have found something that can get them so revved up for this game. I even agree that this is a highly appropriate feature for a game set in the Star Trek universe. So I'm definitely not criticizing anyone for being excited by this video.

What I'm not getting is why this video is attracting such wildly positive comments. Allowing customizization of the physical attributes of characters is hardly unique to Cryptic in today's computer games -- Bethesda (for example) does it for single-player games; SWG has it; and I believe there's at least one middleware package that does nothing but physical character customization.

So why is this video of character customization for Star Trek Online generating so much enthusiastic praise?

Would a similar video showing something of the range of starships available in this game and their potential level of customization get the same level of positive response? Or less? Or much more?

Other games have great character customization yes ... but there are also some VERY popular and successful games that do not. WoW for example. People are excited by this video because it shows pretty well that at the very least we're getting for STO something far better than WoW's model of "pick one of 7 human male faces with one of 5 facial hair options".

The only race that they refer to as being short usually are fat. And thos are the Pakleds and Tellarites. I know I have seen an episodes that had some peasants that were short people on the show.

Point being is, I just wondered if we could create characters that would actually be short? Or would all the players be roughly the same body build, and just scaled larger or smaller. I hate when MMO's do this, because they never really feel short, just small. lol or child-like version of a regular character.

Just looking for more details on variety on overall shape. I am most pleased with the detail they have done with the face!

One thing I really noticed is that you can change the size and placement of scars, rather than having specifics scars in specifics locations. I'm guessing you can also change the severity of those scars, since I noticed you can change the depth of facial features, such as nose ridges. This is a huge departure from previous character creators. What I noticed is, that the scar intersected a mustache and beard, but had no effect on the mustache and beard. Realistically, the scar tissue wouldn't be able to grow hair.

Would it be possible to have scars procedurally eliminate hair growth where they intersect hair features?

I just went on a long quest to find a species that might be short in star trek and came up empty handed LOL
The only race that they refer to as being short usually are fat. And thos are the Pakleds and Tellarites. I know I have seen an episodes that had some peasants that were short people on the show.

Point being is, I just wondered if we could create characters that would actually be short? Or would all the players be roughly the same body build, and just scaled larger or smaller. I hate when MMO's do this, because they never really feel short, just small. lol or child-like version of a regular character.

Just looking for more details on variety on overall shape. I am most pleased with the detail they have done with the face!

Also, I would like to be able to make a Hierarchy member, their heads are somewhat unique, and I would really like it if I could change the fat ratio of bodies, even though everyone is thin in Star Trek, unless they're old or alien.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I have to admit being a little surprised at the extreme level of praise being lavished on Cryptic for this video.

I certainly don't mind that it's got people excited! As long as Cryptic can deliver on what it's promising in the video, it's great that so many people have found something that can get them so revved up for this game. I even agree that this is a highly appropriate feature for a game set in the Star Trek universe. So I'm definitely not criticizing anyone for being excited by this video.

What I'm not getting is why this video is attracting such wildly positive comments. Allowing customizization of the physical attributes of characters is hardly unique to Cryptic in today's computer games -- Bethesda (for example) does it for single-player games; SWG has it; and I believe there's at least one middleware package that does nothing but physical character customization.

So why is this video of character customization for Star Trek Online generating so much enthusiastic praise?

Would a similar video showing something of the range of starships available in this game and their potential level of customization get the same level of positive response? Or less? Or much more?

Again, not a criticism; I'm glad people are so happy about physical character customization. I'm even pleased to see this video myself. I'm just curious: why such a particularly high level of excitement over a feature that was expected for this game and that other games have?

Info on the game is great, but I htink there is a sizeable portion of people who think we;re not getting enough, or that we're not getting it fast enough. Sure, we can read all the Ask Cryptics and say "cool, that's gonna be in the game" but this character video is "real", people can see it and not have to speculate about what it's going to look like, what kind of options there's going to be, etc

Well that's just my opinion anyways, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't as excited as anyone else, it looks SWEET. The only problem I'm having now is deciding whether or not I'm going to stick with my Andorian, or go with another race (most likely custom created)

I know... the ability to apply different colored textures and modify a humanoids face, with a variety of head bumps and ridges seems vastly unoriginal, the did this in the series because they didn't have the 3D power we have got to day and had to settle for anything they could do to a human actor, while there always has to be a start, i hope this is only a tiny bit of where the character creator is going because they DO have the power to make any sort of 3D creature they want, sticking to a single basic humanoid form will only really doing what most games already do... ooh... shall i have 3 ridges or 5... i dont expect spore level of character creation, but some genuinely unique characters would help me see that these game designers are not clinging too tightly to the IP... something FAR FAR too many games (and movies...) are doing these days... just so incredibly unoriginal and boring, sure its nice to have your favorite IP made into a world you can finaly be a part of... I would just like to see it try and go beyond its box a bit..

I'd just like to point out that you are comparing a 2009 release MMO to a single player title, a dying MMO and a middleware program. If you compare it to recently released MMOs and MMOs that are dominating the market currently, you will probably find that Cryptic is leading the way with character customisation. In fact, the character customisation we are being promised in STO far exceeds the character customisation in SWG. From previous Cryptic entries, such as the CoX games I can well believe that what they are saying we will get, we will get. With exception to Bethesda, what Cryptic are offering in the way of character customisation with STO far outstrips the competition in this regard.

Another reason why this is gathering so much attention and praise if for one simple reason - the is Star Trek. Every single Star Trek fan has, at one point or another, imagined what their own race would look like in the IP and has created every detail in their minds. This gives us a chance to - within a certain set of boundaries - add our own mark to the IP, even if it is not lasting. It's literally a dream come true for many and a way for them to finally immerse themselves in Star Trek like never before.

You are looking at this feature far to generally. I myself don't really care for the ability to create my own race but I do see why people are so excited, specifically over the Star Trek IP.

--FlatfingersIt's been my experience that people are always excited when a character creator video shows up, probably because it gets their imaginations going, and one's imagination is really what keeps being a member of a MMOG pre-launch community interesting, at least to me.

I'm one of the people who actually didn't much like the character editor in "City of Heroes", because every change I made to my character was an extreme change; it was switching from one pre-rendered component to a completely different one (I guess, though, that this may fit kind of well into their comic-style universe). In this video, however, I get the idea that we'll be able to make some less remarkable changes to our appearances, too; things like being able to edit the shape of our noses and mouthes. Maybe it won't quite be like in "Star Wars Galaxies", but if it's anything along those lines, with some nice foreheads thrown into the ring, I'll be content.

Sort of like a Cardassian(Gul Dukat) in a Cardassian uniform commanded a Bird of Prey? On the actual show? Theres a story to be told with every character, so who's to say the Cardassian flying about didn't shipjack the Defiant class ship he just blew you up with.

Now how many of you will try to add your likeness into the game, sure it's easy to make an alien, but how easy is it to make you as a game person. lol :D

I hope the do something different with size sliders...rather than just being a proportional slider...which makes for short races just being a reduced scale rather than shorter, which looks poorly in my opinion.

I am sure the music is just temp fill, and something much better will be in release.
