I dont think anyone has said this yet (at least i hope no one has). Anyway, I play city of heroes, and the name of one of my characters on Liberty is Mr. Vulcan. A few weeks ago i was doing a mission with a group and i said lol. I was then immediately "attacked" by the group because vulcans hide their emotions so they cant express humor. Then, i said that rather than lol standing for laugh out loud, that it stood for Logic out loud when i said it. Anyway just thought i would share this. I hope it carries over into the game when it launches.

What i hope doesn't carry over into the game when it launches is people that think it's ok to "attack" someone for not role playing their character correctly, or as will be the case for me, not role playing it at all.

Even though role playing is fun and even thought it can be annoying when someone comes in who ruins the mood. I have to agree with the sentiments of Hagon.

No one should be attacking someone for not role-playing or being out of Character. And frankly… you’re a bit of a whack job if you do feel the need to outburst in anger because of it. Not to mention a rather huge hypocrite because the moment you jump on someone for being out of Character, you, yourself have just done the very same thing.

Instead, stay in character and address their out of character habits in character as strange or un-becoming of your character…Methinjk it is more fun that way and less offensive to everyone.

Tell them...no don't say that.
Try telling them your Vulcan is a "V'tosh ka'tur"
Now you can show emotion and still be as logical or illogical as you see fit.

Unfortunately I have a feeling that there will be a lot of "True Fans!!!" attacking other players for being out of character, or for not having watched every single episode, or for not having memorised the background to the same level as they have. It's rather inevitable. I really hope it doesn't come up as much as I think it will though.

On a related note: RPing a Vulcan does not mean that there should be no expression of emotion. Vulcans are not robots and do have a sense of humour. A good Vulcan should be in command of his emotions, but this is not the same as pretending they don't exist -- and of course, not all of them should be instant experts at this lifelong struggle. I've always been of the view that the reason Vulcans don't typically show an appreciation of humour is more due to human attempts at humour being unfunny by Vulcan standards, rather than any absolute rule against laughter.

Just my thoughts on Vulcan roleplaying. :P

Well here is how i see it. With newer mmo's coming out starting with WOW. I think that if you join a role playing server then your expected to role play your charactors. If you join a pvp server then you should not whine about being killed all the time. Now that being said if you join a normal server and you should be able to play your character, ships, etc... how you see fit as long as it does not violate the terms of agreement that cryptic has up.

I kind of wondered how emotes would work for Vulcans, if they would be disabled, such that if I type /smile, it says '*insert some name* has a blank look on his face.' Or if they'll be enabled and it's just up to the player to use them or not use them.

I concur with this sentiment.

Well you should have left the group. That was no reason for them to attack you because you "lol". Thats just plain dumb and stupid on their part. Also, they really not true Vulcans anyways. A Vulcan would have not have attacked you but wonder out loud, whats so funny? And remind you that Vulcans dont show emotions just logical thinking. Thats it. To meet out physical harm on a mistake is crazy.

I agree.

I still am holding out hope that they do not go the single server route and atleast break it down to 2 servers (RP and Standard).

There will be many that want to RP in the ST universe and at the same time there will be many that do not. Of these two groups you will also have a sub group or those that RP ONLY (you also should be RPing on a RP server) and those that will flame/grief (verbal, ingame physically grief, as well as the IRPWN'R name kiddies). To avoid trying to get the two to work together they should just seperate them. Lets those that RP, RP and those that don't, don't.
