View Full Version : Will we see museum ships?

Not sure if this was talk about already, and if so my bad.

But I got to thinking how cool would it be to have a couple ships from the TV show in the game. They could have all the decks and rooms, and you could just walk about checking out your favorite ship in the game.

These ships would be museum types, not traveling anywhere, just sitting in orbit around whatever planet, waiting on people to visit them. And yes you could instance the ships to make it work.

There is of course the USS Enterprise-M.

Playable ships in a museum. Nice.

If you can prove you and a crew can fly one...can ya keep a copy you can get from a nearby shipyard assembly plant? : ) To have to walk away without one is gonna be painful.

Cedric. I'm biased. I like so many of the things you present. I hope you get them all someday. You deserve it. You are truly their very long term demographic.

If you don't mind I'd like to ponder a few museum tangents here.

If STO were successful, It seems a good thing to build into the MMO infrastructure for the existing subscribers but especially if you planned to leverage a MMO infrastructure to deliver experiences to general audiences that are not into the gaming aspect of STO at all, but rather in the fact they could 'visit' the Star Trek universe at home.

example: Take the concept of the Las Vegas Experience shows and work those into an MMO infrastructure. Many folks would LIKE to go to Vegas and take a ride in the Trek universe but can not. The MMO infrastructure could provide such a thing like the museum and even some short, 'hands off' kind of 'tours' for folks who love Trek but would never play a Trek game or MMO.

---

The Museum as an educational/entertainment tool: Provide the 'museum' to schools for science lessons. Add in some basic NASA/Science information and then let them fly it for some adventure! They may like it enough to pursue science, get into Star Trek and even play the MMO.

The entire MMO is a museum piece:

Star Trek is already 'history' in the books. It is being taught as historic in academia, It is it's own area of psychology and is it's own unique sub-culture. Everything that happens with it, large or small is watched and recorded by some modern historian. Anything created regardless if film or TV is considered historic by the world at large. Especially at Christie's.:)

My point: The idea that the Star Trek universe would exist at all online is amazing to people...let alone that one could actually be involved in events going on in it. Yet still many will not be interested in playing but just want to come in and see history in the making as a civilian and not be limited to roaming the museum. We so easily take for granted what a wonder an MMO is. To us it is a game...to some...a world wonder.

A MMO infrastructure is one of the greatest of all infrastructures and it can possibly be used for more than delivering just a gaming aspect.

Anyone who thinks Trek is dead may not be paying attention to history.

Hopefully CBS and ATARI feel the same about all this and will be reinforcing Star Trek, the MMO (and themselves!) as historic.

As a gamer. Those extra people could mean the ULTIMATE RIDE for us.

Anyway. Just pondering. Thanks for getting me thinking as always, Cedric.

This would be nice to see in the game an all yes we need the moon cites as will :). If there not there I will cry lol.

Kinneas if they put in 1/2 of what I posted over the years, I will be shocked. :D

One of these days I will have to post my personal wish list for STO, a recap of what I posted from the 1st day until now.

I would most definately like that ingame, it does sound fitting though to have the ships 'o old as museum ships! :)

They've mentioned we'd be encountering older ships in certain missions, but your idea is even cooler! Just being able to visit an old Enterprise and gather in the mess or ten forward would be a nice add-on :)

I rember reading the star trek novle ''Before Dishonor'' a book from collection of Star Trek: The Next Generation novels, set after the movie Nemesis. In the book there is mentiond a federation plant which is a musem world and has ships and all sorts of other things.

Couldn't you just the holodeck for something like this?

Sorry but a holodeck?!

Are you even serious? A holodeck is just a vivid representation of something, it's not real (trust me i know this is ST and a game)!

To actually have museums ingame, ships and/or buildings/statues and such would add to the experience for many!

i think it would be pretty sweet to be able to relive and replay old scenarios through a museum. ie the Battle of the Mutara Nubula, Wolf 359, the TOS Episode Balance of Terror and several others. im not counting on it though. im sure there would be hefty royalties to be paid and other issues that preclude that.

This is a great idea and i hope the Devs get a chance to look at it. Maybe a combination of ideas would work here as well like having the ships in game to tour but allowing us to fly a couple of them on the holodeck.

There are a number of possible ways to do it. Holodeck recreations being the easiest (Kobyashi Maru, anyone?), but crosstime gallumphing is a recurring theme... time travel missions in an "instanced" format. Kind of at "Trials and Tribbleations"aproach could let us actually participate in historical battles with out screwing up the Canon. For example, Prevent the destruction of the KchooBlssuGH during the battle of Cardassia Prime." " Provide cover for the Enterprise, etc." Many, many possibilities in a universe with Holodecks, Timeships, Anomolies, and of course, Q.

It shouldn't be a difficult thing for Mods to do, since they already said we would encounter older Starships (like during Time Warp Encounters). The only thing that they would need to do, is add the interiors.

And Cryptic just announced you will keep your previous ships, so why not have special rewards where a player receives an old Consitution or Miranda-class as private vessels?

As for "historic" missions like the Kobayashi Maru, all the Devs have to do, is have a command where it transports you to a private instance and call it a "simulation".
