Televsion used to be my main source of entertainment. But the demise of the sitcoms have led me to MMO's primarily. Unfortunately I dont have an MMO to play at the moment. The industry has really had a bad couple of years with the failures and constant WoW clones.
Im reduced to watching Seinfeld reruns and bouncing from MMO to MMO till STO launches.
Im done with those Theme Park MMO's like World of Warcraft. I want a virtual simulator MMO like Star Wars Galaxies used to be. I dont need to be the "hero" like the folks over at Bioware say I surely want as they develop The Old Republic. I just want a chance to exist and make my mark on an MMO.
Have MMO's replaced television as your main form of entertainment ? Will STO be your home for years to come or are you just looking for a few months thrill ride ?

I think the greatest attraction of STO is that its a way for a Star Trek fan to live out all the expierences that we've scene on the show. This is our chance to beome part of a bigger Universe....
This is going to be the first MMO I've played, and its going to be more than just a thrill ride to me.

I have the telly on in the background. I try to never miss The Daily Show or The Colbert Report (that's been on late last week so I haven't and I can't watch on the interweb anymore because Comedy Central are blocking UK users now ). I love NCIS too, one of my old avatars was Ziva with a Starfleet badge.

I mostly play Call of Duty World At War online as my primary means of entertainment. I played WoW for one Summer, and did not find any enjoyment in it. Star Wars Galaxies was fun at launch, but I canceled my subscription when computer problems kept me from playing; I tried downloading a trial years later but they changed the game to follow a WoW style of gameplay and did not like it. Those were the only two MMOs I've played. STO and The Old Republic are two MMOs I'm keeping my eye on and that I may play. I may go one way or the other, or give both a try, depending on how the games appeal to me closer to launch, which seems more promising, and depending on how close their releases are together.

The more I read about The Old Republic the less I like it. Its a story-driven game, translation a theme park game similiar to World of Warcraft and its many clones like Lord of the Rings.
Those games are fine for a quick thrill but like any single player rpg, they get boring after a while. Virtual simulator MMO's tend to have longer lasting appeal as the game is more than just a developer's story you follow.
We dont know what kind of game STO will be but it seems it wont be a WoW clone so far.

I've played several MMo's from SWG, EQ 1 and 2, LotRO, WoW and EvE and they have only been able to hold my attention for a couple of months. Mainly because they either are about raiding for loot (which u can;t go on raids if you don't have loot which makes the game no fun), or they're too complicated to skill up, or there's not enough story.
I believe that STO will have just enough lore and story, and enough PvE and PvP to keep the game fresh on so many levels. But the main thing that has me excited is the aspect of randomly generated worlds where you can be the first captain to discover it, and initiate first contact. now THAT MAKES SENSE lolz. :D

Same here. I have the TV on behind me right now simply for background noise. If it's not on, it feels too quiet here. And on the rare occasion that something I haven't seen and am interested in comes on, I can just turn around to watch.
Though I would love to see that Ziva avatar. NCIS is a great, underrated show, as was JAG, the parent show. Abby is easily my favorite character, though I also liked Kate. ****ed me off when she was killed off. Ziva's okay, but Idk, she just doesn't fit as well for me.

Yes. 24/7...as much as possible.
---
As with many others this is the MMO and the only MMO some have ever wanted or care to participate in.
Trek is a lifestyle and this is just another extension of that lifestyle.
So...unless it just happens to be the worst possible thing ever made, chances are some like myself will want to be connected 24/7 either in-game or staying in touch out of the game through other communication avenues.

STO won't be my only source of entertainment.
Outside of family, which is always my first source, there is watching my Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis DVDs, watching my Trek DVDs, playing Warhammer Online, playing Football/Basketball/Golf/Guitar Hero on my 360, shooting pool, playing golf, reading and fishing. Oh, and of course, my job takes up much of my time too, and can be entertaining at times.
HMMMM. seeing this list, when am I going to have time for STO?
---edit---
Dang, I forgot to toss in Stargate Worlds, which I will most certainly give a try as well. (Just hedging my bets)
I have played allot of mmos over the years to name some:
EQ, EQ2, SWG, Plant side, wow, Vanguard, Matrix, Guild Wars, Age of Conan, an allot of free to play mmo's
Now that is over I played some of them for a long time like SWG (Don't play it now but did) an some I play for just weeks like wow.
When STO an the new Star wars mmo come s out I will get both but I am looking to play STO allot more then the Star wars mmo just because of the sell out GL is. an I like Star Trek more
STO won't be my only source of entertainment.

I've been really lax in my MMO attention lately, seeing as I spend all of my time on these forums, with my girlfriend, watching Star Trek, thinking about STO, and sleeping. College starts back Tuesday (sigh) so hopefully Star Trek will still have a place. Haha.

No, it will not be my main source of entertainment. I am a gamer first and a ST fan second. I do not consider the game an extension of a lifestyle or any such thing, just an interesting sounding game attached to a franchise I enjoy.
MMOs have never, and I cannot imagine ever will, be the cornerstone of my entertainment. They are not games I can play for perhaps 2 hours max (on average), in one sitting. Sometimes I play less than that sometimes more. I figure I'll play the game like crazy for the first few days I have it, just because of the hype. But ultimately, STO will be the type of game I play in the evenings when I am in my dorm room with nothing to do.
MMOs tend not to have well defined stories, so there is little to get caught up in such that I cannot put the game down. That is what draws me to TOR, the promise of being story driven (in an actually successful manner). STO sounds more like a sandbox open ended game, which sounds like fun, but just as with the original SWG, while it was fun (or at least I thought it was), it was not so addicting that I found it hard to put the game down if I had other things that needed to be done, or if the opportunity to socialize with friends arose.
Play WoW at the moment and have done for about 2 years but i am getting really bored of it now and have been looking at Stargate Worlds which does hold alot of interest with myself, but having been a fan of Star Trek for many years i think i may give this a try. I like the thought of being able to captain my own starship but not limited to being stuck on the ship all of the time and can go on other ships or beam down to other planets.
Until either of these are released ill probably log into WoW on occasion, play some single player games such Dead Space, Left 4 Dead. All in between the usual rigmarole of life :)

That will all depend on the product Cryptic rolls out. Until I see it, it is impossible to say what level of percentage the game will be of my entertainment time. If it's good and falls into what I look for in a game, then it might. If it total abandons the casual player, then my entertainment dollar will be spent elsewhere.
If STO will become what it likely is becoming i would have to say yes! ;)

As I have once again had beaten into my head because of having to deal with these type of people, getting too wrapped up in a game (sadly it's already happening with people for a game that's not even close to being out yet) just isn't healthy. No matter what game it is or what IP it's based on. It leads too many people into blurring the lines between reality and the game. People start to lose sight (if they ever had it in the first place that is) of what is game related and what is real people related.
I'll be spending a lot of time playing if the game play is good, but I'll be making sure not to let it get out of hand. That's kind of easy with me having a family and a job, but even so it needs to be monitored closely. There's much more to life than playing a MMOG every waking hour. Even the people making this game will most assuredly tell everyone that.

MMOs have become my main source of entertainment. Currently I am playing CoH/CoV mainly, but a couple of others take up the time when I do not feel like putting on the cape.
Will STO take the place of CoH/CoV as the most played MMO in my current stable? Well that depends on how well I like the game once I play it.
I agree Hagon, it is only obvious that RL comes first at all times eventhough that may not always be the case for some i fear! Being a father my time is, at times limited as well and unfortunately my children do not even live with me but with their mother. Still they are what keep me going and i have to be there for them whenever they need me, fortunately i do see them alot so that is a good thing. It is also likely that i shall return to working (presently unclear where or what) so i am not going to let a game, even Star Trek come between getting my life back on track for that would be a great mistake!
Your words were well chosen for it is often that many seem to forget other things in life! :)

I've done the WoW bit, and for the most part, I couldn't bring myself to buy the latest expansion. Just recently I gave WAR a try, and was very pleasantly suprised with it. I was also considering giving AoC a second shot, but the news yesterday that Funcom is cutting their US servers down from 24 to 6, tells me AoC isn't going to last.
What's my handicap? Last time I calculated, I was about a 14, but it's been about 6 months since I set foot on a course.
Of course, in Tiger Woods, I'm better than he is. :p

Hmmm depends on how you define entertainment.... very unlikely that any definition of entertainment will reduce down to just STO, but you never know.
The reality is that life itself is entertaining, and while escaping it can be fun too I prefer at best a balance between the two.

Unless this game can top EVE Online and its massive universe this will be my secondary MMO but I think I would enjoy this game cause it is Star Trek just wish they would take some of the mechanics of EVE and intregrate them here along with a ground game like here and this game would be unstopabble!

same for me. I have the tv on for the noise as MMO's usually have terrible sound effects and music. But regular cable sucks, only shows I watch are Bones, Scrubs, and Law and Order. So its mostly dvd's like Seinfeld, Family Guy, South Park, or Voyager.
I used to spend 6 hrs a day or more on an MMO. Im retired so I have a lot of free time. but the MMO's lately suck. Im sick of wow and clones like it
I miss Star Wars Galaxies

I could definitely see Star Trek Online becoming my main source of entertainment, but I can't say that it will be for sure since we still don't really know how deep the game will be; in an ideal world, the game would truly have no end and would be as similar to the Star Trek universe as possible, but logistically that would be almost impossible for the developers to implement. As long as the game as fun, intriguing, and stays true to the Star Trek universe, I can definitely see myself playing the game quite a bit for years to come!
I miss Star Wars Galaxies
Well never played that unfortunately, but i think you will find some 'o that back in this game! :)

Since hearing about this game so long ago, the excitement for me has only built as it comes closer to happening. I can't see anything else taking this games place as my primary source of off time fun. :D
It will be , i hope , depends only from the product quality.
What fear me most is the comunity , i really hope to have trek lovers and not ex fps fraggers .....

No. Other pastimes have.

I've learned to not do long commitments to a game before I've played it.

I actually have never really gotten into any MMOs hardcore due to always having a ridiculously slow internet connection , but TV has never really done anything for me for a long time,
Ive have Explored Vardenfell , Champion of Cyrodil , a vampire, the Nerevarine,Speaker for the Night Mother ,and more recently the Savior of the wastes :D but no MMOs.
Plus so many of the new ones are just cookie cutters of the old ones I couldn't ever hope to catch up in when I did get a faster connection.Too many13 year old juggernauts :(
Besides, pen and paper DnD always hit the spot for my friends and I, and no monthly subscriptions !
But Im really looking forward to an MMO that lets me play in a world I actually want to BE IN
I have watched Star Trek in every way shape and form forever in between everything else, and out of all the worlds of fantasy, in every game Ive played, Star Trek is the only one I would actually willingly enter into......... The Final Frontier ;)
So yes,
to comment on the OP This will take a front seat entertainment wise provided it comes to my console.

Cool question
I don't think MMO's have necessarily replaced TV as my main entertainment outlet, but they are certainly shifting the balance in thier favour right now.
I as I am sure many others do, tend to have the TV on anyway while Im playing MMO's but MMO's do seem to be holding my attention more at the moment though not enough for me to go afk in order to miss my favourite shows lol
I try to have 3 MMO's that I use that keep me happy one Supers, one Sci Fi and one Fantasy.. with those 3 genre's covered I tend to be kept very happy.. although finding decent mmo's to fit those genre's hasnt been easy. I have Lord of the Rings online as my happy staple Fantasy game, and City of Heroes/Villaisn has been filling my supers role on and off (though im hoping to replace it with Cryptics champions online via my 360 once it is out). However the sci fi category has always been a gaping void as far as character AND ship based sci fi mmo's go.. ive tried everything from EVE to SWG but none have kept my interest more than momentarily.. but then I heard STO announced and being a Tekkie I had something of an Apoplectic Joygasm..and so I am psyched and hopeful it will complete my triumvirate of happy MMO's... if not well Stargate Worlds, Star Wars the old Republic and a Fallout MMO are all in the work so I have fallback plans... but my hopes for Trek have priority by a long way.

I've not watched broadcast television in some time and cancelled my cable TV subscription a few years ago. Between my job, my wife, and the current MMO I play, I like to think I have a balanced life. Therefore, my main source of entertainment is not one thing, but everything in moderation. The consise anwer is no, STO will not be my main source of entertainment...but if its as good as I hope it will be, then it certainly will take on a greater share of my recreational time :)

National television was out-classed by the internet years ago. As long as I have my PC and work I'm satisfied. I've played WoW, WarHammer, Age of Conan, Knights of the Old Republic and even LOTRO and WoW was the only one to hold my attention for longer than one month.
Star Trek games as a whole have not been very succssful, but if Cryptic can deliver, I'm a STO gamer for life!

Yea i agree i find myself sitting on my desktop doing nothing, alot of games are getting to bland for my taste altho some have been good recently like Fallout 3. As far as MMO'S go i was a big WOW fan i played for 4 years from the beg to the newer exansion. I find the Lich king expansion ruined the game completetly its WAY WAY to easy to get gear and finish raids now. I was 80 and fully epiced out with T7 with the flip of my finger pretty much and so is everyone else pretty much i havent played in a couple months now its just really boring.
Older MMO's like Planetside, Eve online eh. Planetside is fun but its to old and outdated for my tastes, Eve online is just a slow slow slow boring games. I play it for like 3 weeks then stop because it gets so boring mining forever just to get a ship to have it blwon up 1 hour later.
Warhammer online was really fun at first but i canceled after my first 30 days due to major stuttering and plagues almost everyone which the devs havent even responded to on the forums so they have no intentions of fixing it.
I agree im sick and tired of see'ing nothing but Medieval Type MMO's, Wow, Guild war's, ever quest, warhammer and so on. I v always wanted to play a game like STO is going to be and the only one was eve online and well i already said that was a extrmely slow and boring game.
I predict i will be with STO for many years assuming the game engine doesnt run like crap like warhammer and there expansions and content patchs bring great things to the game.
As for TV i watch tv when im on the computer lol, altho latetly NOTHING at all has been on not even good re-runs of movies. I dont know why i have HBO/Showtime everything nothing good is on total waste of money.
Even my fav shows are being canceled and pulled off the air. Like iv seen ST DS9 like once and i was watching the re-runs on Spike TV because that once was like 9 years ago. Half way through the series spike tv cuts it off the program for CSI NY all day and nite. Thats all Spike TV shows is CSI now no lie all day and nite.
Sci Fi channel canceled Battlestar Galactica so all thats left is the last 8 episodes, Star gate Atlantis was cancled. Of course there is LOST thats back but 1 episode a week ... eh. Altho iv noticed they are starting Enterprise re-runs every day at 5PM which is good
