Will years actually go past as the years go on playing this game, eg. it starts 2409 but as the years go on in real life it becomes 3412, etc. or will it be the same year forever?

Or will years only go forward when expansions are released?

It's hard to say. As we all know, we're going to rise in rank. And while it may not be particularly easy, I'm sure a good chunk of players are going to become admirals (or whatever the highest rank is) within a year. So if the chronology is real-time then assuming you start at Lieutenant, for example, and become an admiral in under a year/ a year, there's going to be something wrong with that.

I'm all for realistic chronology, but it wouldn't work. I'm going to bet on expansion chronology.

I would like to see time go by and have new events occur. I think it would get boring if everything was stagnant. For example if the factions never changed. I would like to see the universe meet new major races and things like that (outside of an expansion pack). Maybe have an event that changed everything over night.

It's an interesting question. Time can't pass by too slowly or your character would progress too fast, but it can't go by too quickly either or you'll be flying a 50 year old top of the line rust bucket. You could always say they had to promote people quicker because of personnel shortage in war time.

And they can't change too much in universe (faction shifts) because that would unbalance the game. Adding a playable faction without creating an unbalance will already be hard enough.
