Romulans are one of Star Trek's more interesting species (they've been in five series in one way or another). Plus, The Path to 2409 has been mostly about their internal power struggle. The Federation and Klingon Empire are relatively stable, which equals yawn. Boring. Now, if the Federation was at an impass, such-and-such member wants to break away for this reason, then more gamers would be, "I want that side to be playable!"

If you look closely at the drama on our IRF thread, alot of it is non-romulans getting all excited.

So true. I'm much more interested in playing Romulans than Klingons as an alt (of course my main will be a Feddie :D) And something about the D'Deridex is just so imposing and sinister. It's the classic symbol of Romulan power. A huge battleship that can challenge the best Federation ships but also has the best stealth capabilities of almost any other ship? Sounds like my dream.



Oh, and Freejack, dammit, now I'm mad at myself for forgetting the Rocinante as a potential ship name! I'm sure you have dibs, but I'm glad at least to see someone throwing in a few Rush references ;)

'Reactions'? Well, let us see...

Maiek types in a command and turns the monitor to face the viewer. After a moment, the Romulan emblem vanishes to reveal a rather well-fed Starfleet Admiral. "Well now, let's not be too hasty. I mean, I know technically it's an act of aggression, but I'm sure there are mitigating circumstances..."

He lets the Admiral babble on for several more seconds about 'reciprical actions' and 'cross-border diplomatic conduits of influence' then sighs, and types in a few new characters.

The screen blanks out for a moment, then a Klingon appears on the screen, screaming in Kll'inghann and shaking his fists. Spittle flies onto the monitor feed, blurring the image. Maiek waits until the holo-unit is so covered in spit that the viewer can't even see the shouter any more, then turns off the monitor in mid-howl.

The reactions of the Kll'inghann and Lloann'mhrahel are well-documented already, I think.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I understand the desire to limit complexity (and to leave something for an expansion), but I do wish the Romulan Star Empire was going to be a playable faction at launch.

One of my favorite gimmicks in Star Fleet Battles was to get some unsuspecting Feddie to chase me in my War Eagle... right into the path of the Nuclear Space Mines I'd previously laid while cloaked.

Between that and "pseudo plasma torpedoes" -- might be a real torpedo, might not be; you'd better expend phaser energy to defend against it just in case -- the opportunities that SFB offered for playing mind games with opponents were rich indeed. :)

I look forward to the day when we can apply that level of subterfuge and more as Romulan characters in the Star Trek universe....

If they don't have Romulans to play when it comes out, it's pretty much going to kill it for me. They have been my favorites since I first started watching TOS not long after it came out. The other caracters just really don't hold that much interest for me.

Well, it doesn't look like the Romulans will be out at release as a playable Faction - I put emphasis on that latter statment 'cause just because they aren't playable as a faction doesn't mean they won't be in the game as NPCs. However, you'll be able to create a 'Romulan' character (appearance-wise anyway) when you create them.

Also, the Romulans will be added as a future expansion... at least that appears to be the plan right now. :)

Fortunately as this is a forum we dont have to read the whiny messages. I understand just as much as anyone that people want romulans. I want them myself, I love romulans. And we WILL have them. After the game launches romulans and dominion will be added, in addition to other races.

At the same time, id much rather STO release in the holiday season of this year with federation/iklingons and add more races later, than to wait 2 more years and end up getting the same.
