Speaking of the music of STO...
Cryptic, if you listen to 1 and only 1 piece of advice from me, please listen to this.
Soundtrack = IMPORTANT.
Case in point, Age of Conan. I have the BEAUTIFUL soundtrack to that game, and quite honestly, just hearing one of the songs gives me the overwhelming urge to try playing AoC again.
You need a solid soundtrack. Furthermore, that soundtrack needs to be available on iTunes or to order from your website, etc.
Don't pull a Warhammer and try going it without a soundtrack, or not producing a soundtrack CD.
Do not underestimate the power of the music to inspire people to play.

I've been a longtime fan of being able to play music ingame. At present, Lord of the Rings Online has an excellent music system based on ABC scribed music files. Additionally, being able to play in bands can be a rather exciting social event.
Similarly, dancing is another widely employed social exhibition that, when done with a group and synced up right, can be quite entertaining. Youtube is replete with music/dance videos from several MMOs (most notably SWG) that I've found just amazing.
The creative talent of many players, specifically Star Trek fans, would have a field day with music and dance in STO. Examples from Star Trek (Spock playing the Vulcan lytherette in TOS and Orion Slave girls dancing, just to name a few) would seem to warrant the effort to install such systems into STO.
Getting back to the music system...
Having at least the basic instument types (strings, woodwinds, and percussion) would provide great auditory variety depending on the number of variations available (i.e. harp, lute/guitar, violin/cello, piano, etc). While it is not necessary to create each individual instrument (perhaps one can cover all the strings with a user selectable sound type), the realistic sounds would be important. A harp should sound like a harp, a flute like a flute, etc. As I mentioned before, Lord of the Rings Online has an impressive music system that I've yet to see surpassed. Should such a system be implemented here, I only ask that any songfiles created for bands be playable WITHOUT the need for the songfile itself to be previously shared among all the players prior to performing. This would allow for ad-hoc performances and eliminates the possibility of players having the wrong version at performance time.
In my experience, player customization, creative and dynamic expressions (music/dance), and soloability have become hallmark traits of some of the best MMO's published to date. Star Trek Online will engender the most powerful icon to ever exist in American culture and Cryptic has already made it clear that customzation is a top priority. The addition of a dynamic music (and dance?) system would bring that priority to its ultimate realization.
The freedom of players to engage in a variety of activities that lead to self (character) improvement is the the very core of what the Star Trek philosophy engenders. I encourage the developers to consider this when designing this next level of the human adventure...allowing STO to boldly go where no MMO has gone before. Live long, and prosper!

I'm hoping for something that'll run a media player like itunes through the game. I always prefer my music over the music in the game.
