View Full Version : Command Ship Awards

It is a not an uncommon practice for naval ships to earn awards or ribbons. These are normally displayed as ribbons on the side of the ship similar to how military personnel wear ribbons on their uniforms. I would like to present the idea of ship awards rather than individual awards which is somewhat like earning badges in other MMOs. There could be ribbons for tours of duty, exploration, participating in a particular battle, or even the defeat of a particular number of enemies. Considering that in the past Q & A that it was said we can keep our old ships I would like some of these ribbons to be attached to individual ships rather than just the player or the character. I feel this would be interesting because some players may wish to tackle a mission or a battle in a older generation starship for the challenge and because some might find it a greater achievement when they defeat all odds in a frigate as opposed to a battleship. This could also make raids more interesting so instead of every player in the game showing up in the same most powerful battleship class/hull you might see people showing up for raids in destroyer and frigate class starships. Yes, they will probly get blown up but some people do like a challenge and I for one would like to take a starter ship and see how far I can go with it. Lets give our ships some history instead of playing the arms game where we try to get in the biggest and baddest ship out there. This goes for Klingons too. You know your skill in battle is superior when you can defeat a more heavily armed foe is a smaller ship. I am curios if there are others that feel as I do in that ships should be more personalized and should gain achievements for that ship and its crew rather than just the captain.

First of all, a block of text is annoying to read bro, a little punctuation wouldn't kill ya!
As for the idea itself, I kinda like it. But what I would say is it should be for both.
Awarded to the ship and crew for participation in the battle of XYZ : USS Hardcore
Awarded for valiant action during the battle of XYZ : Ensign Smith, Robert

Sorry bout the block text.
Yeah, that is more what I meant. I think the captain should get awarded as well. Since you keep all your old ships it would be interesting to see what awards you could earn with each. I'm really not into powergaming and having the biggest ship. I dislike how games make equipment, in this case your ship, a symbol of your personal status in the game. I think the larger starfleet vessels look cool and all but I like the underdog feel of flying an older ship. Heh, even Picard missed his old ship saying the newer ships don't have the feel that the old ones did. Not the biggest into Trek lore but I think the ship may of been the Stargazer but not sure.

Well your not alone in wanting to fly more classical ships, there are many here (myself included) who will be flying old Bird of Prey's and Constitution classes, regardless of whether they are "end-game" ships or not. I was very happy to learn that we will get to keep our old ships for this very reason, being able to cruise around in my favourite ship, while having my end-gamer to go pursue, well the end-game :D

Yeah. I just think that earning awards for the actual ships would give incentive for players to not just throw away their older designs and actually use them in missions. It would also give more of a variety in the ships we see as we level up. I like the Bird of Prey too buy I am more the fan of the old D-7 I think they call it, Klingon ships like you see in the old series and the first Star Trek movie. Pity a cloud disentegrates them or digitizes them or whatever it did. :)

Great idea, but wether they do or not, I will be taking a shuttle craft like a runabout or Delta flyer after a Klingon battle cruiser...
I want to skirt the shields of the ship and keep pounding away on a particular area until i wear it down and hit em where it hurts.
Also would be funny to get a group of 5-6 of these types of ships and swarm other players in PVP for a good laugh.

Since having some degree of interior customization is likely, it's a good idea to have badges/plaques earned to be displayed on the ship's interior. Displaying on the outside wouldn't be feasible with the scaled resolution of ships in space and having to quickly render all of those decals for each ship in an area.
Earned badges are always nice for a game to have. Displaying them in an MMO is also a good way to show off.
For the captain's badges, the simple way is to show them in his bio. The cool yet hard way is to show them on his dress uniform.

I had forgotten that we will be able to see the inside of our ships. A wall mounting of the ship's various awards would be very interesting. As I recall, some captains were awarded unique items from other races out of gratitude or simply to honor them. Perhaps after saving a alien civilization these trophies could be displayed next to the official decorations awarded by Starfleet. I'm not sure what Klingons get for awards but I can see them maybe placing perhaps weapons they received for completing a particular trial on display.
