I hope no one else has asked this but, I was wondering, if you choose your captain to be a engineer does that mean you can develop better and more technology then other captains who arnt engineers? and following from that how much tech will we be able to develop? will we be able to develop like quantum slipstream and transwapr or will it just be pushing the effiecny of the warp core 1% up?

Welcome to the forums! I can't answer your questions, but we're always looking for Eggheads...erm, Engineers! :p

It is something we're all waiting on, how does our captain's background effect gameplay, especially starship side?

This would be a nice question to ask Cryptic thread. I would like to know the answer too. My captain career is going to be engineering. Maybe we will get more options to repair starships.

Good Point, Mars,
I seemed to picture it as which field do you want to specialize in. Engineer Captains may get to use newly found technology more rapidly, but Science Captains may be able to adapt randomly found technology for specific use.
I really think we'll have to wait to see what kind of character builds and trees that Cryptic has lined up for us. Y'know, the game engine and graphix are minute in comparison to the lore and balance of the characters within the game.
The dev's could go months listening to whiners about not getting screenshots,; meanwhile they are hard at work creating the parts of the game that are virtually invisible to the player.
Character advancement and ability trees, along with balance, is VERY important; as is the dialogue and quest design. That stuff doesn't write itself, y'know. ;)

If they didn't have that then how would they slip in references to wireframe structures, textures, spectral lighting, shading, poly counts, etc etc, to make themselves seem like pros with cred? :p

I'm smirking because methinks you're being cynical...no? ;)

I would definitely have some hope in engineers being able to pick skill points (or something along those lines) that increases warp core capability, phaser damage, impulse engines, etc.

My guess is that it will affect how your ship performs, what kind of things you can craft, and what special orders you can give your crew in a given situation:
Picard Maneuver vs Tachyon Pulse inverse to their shield harmonics.

the picture of Capt. Sulu saying "well fly her apart then!" comes to mind.
perhaps a captain with engineering skill could push to %130 instead of just %110 of performance from large ship systems.
and by that same token an explorer based captain could get more out of sensors and such.

I say captains with engineering backgrounds have special moves.
Like being able to juryrig certain equipment and pull off a "Miracle" and fix a component that is destroyed to get yourself out of a tight situation!
Or maybe perform emergency evasive manuvers by temporarily boosting power to engines.
or have access to be able to reverse engineer alien tech and use it on your ship. Or able to do alien tech that other captains wouldn't have access to normally.
Or Eject the Warp Core to save the ship from a warp core breech! And have it ACTUALLY work! LOL
