Will we be able to talk to other players online in the game or will we have to use ventrillo teamspeak programs?

Good question. I'd like to see voice chat integrated into the game, but I would guess that since programs like vent and GS are out there and work so well as it is, they probably will not include it in game.
Although, it would be pretty sweet to have not only voice chat, but voice commands as well. Hop in the turbolift and say "Sick Bay" instead of clicking on an icon.

I would rather in-game voice chat, thats if they make it have decent sound quality and not lag too much.

That's a pretty tall order -- it will be next to impossible for them to implement a system with good sound quality and no lag across the vast system configurations and internet connections. Seems most likely to be able to be implemented in the XBox version, and since there's going to be an XBox version of this game, I would say that would push them towards including voice chat in the PC version.

If they want to add voice/chat support in-game, it shouldn't be hard. There are a few major MMOs out there now with it. WoW and LotR off the top of my head...

Indeed the ingame Voice chat for LotR works real well. We all know how hard it is to attack something and try to type at the same time, well for me it is lol

Yeah, many MMOs are now launching with voice chat built in and many of the older ones are implementing it via patches. Off the top of my head, excluding those already mentioned, I know EQ2, SWG, Eve, and I think Age of Conan have built in voice chat. I'd say odds are very good that STO will launch with in-game voice chat.

I agree this should be incorporated in the game. Most (large) fleets will use vent or gs anyway, but for solo players (or small fleets) this would give much more immersion when they want to team up with others.
Seeing it's integrated in Champions I'm guessing this will be a feature in STO as well for group chat.

I didn't realize they'd added voice chat to SWG... Obviously it's been awhile since I let my membership lapse. I was never able to get ventrilo to work right with that game...

I'd really like to see some sort of in-game communication system, but I don't mind waiting until after the game launches because I am sure the developers have other priorities.

I can see it now. You walk up to this cute Orin slave girl, say hello and expect this light sweet voice back only to get a deep bass voice saying "Hello yourself"
The problem with voice is in language control (the foul kind) and raciest comments. Then you have English and none English (you know those crazy Klingons)
But voice does have it's benifits too

Good points Skelly. I do think we need voice though. But like you say there will be some idiot making racist/foul comments. We just need to report it. I have come across this on XBOX live but i'm sorry to say i a newbie when it comes to MMO's. Never played one so i'm not sure what to expect. I just love Star Trek and when i heard they were doing STO i haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I'm 38 yrs old and i'm acting like my 12 yr old son.
Can't Wait.

there has been talk about voice before in past threads.
there has been hints there will be some sort of voice chat system.
but there is talk it will be on different channles.
like your general fraction ie federation. then one for fleet guild, then group sector, private channel.
but I imagine if its just a simple general chat voice like xbox live then fleet / groups will go with other software voice chat software and have the general in game voice chat as a standby or use it for information gathering on events. but keep main comm traffic on there software to prevent enemy forces from listing in on radio chatter. and to keep control over racial or bad language concerns.
