The folks over at GameArtisans.org (http://www.gameartisans.org/) asked two of our Cryptic Studios artists to be judges in their first annual Unearthly Challenge.
The Unearthly Challenge invites environmental artists to create out of this world settings – the kind that grip the imagination and lift a game experience out of the mundane and into the extraordinary. Cryptic Studios has been delighted to co-sponsor the competition.
We’ve also been delighted that two of our own artists have served as judges for challenge. Jens Holdener, one of our STO and CO concept artists, acted as a judge for the 2D portion of the contest, while Sam Rucks, one of our STO Environment Artists, acted as a judge for the 3D portion.

Is this something their doing in their spare time or is it taking them away from their work on STO?

Sounds like something for their supervisors to worry about, not us.
Congratulations Cryptic Artists!

Glanced over the gallery and... man, that's some good stuff there! Alas, I have no artistic talent with graphics.

I'm sorry, I guess I missed something... what does this news have to do with STO?

Well I gather two possible reasons.
1. They can use these creative entries as inspiration.
and
2. They can use this opportunity to steal someones idears for STO :D
heh jking...What I really hope the reason is Cryptic's artists are probably so well respected and talented that the competition wanted to use people who have genuine talent and have the eye to recognize great work and/or can potentially higher these newcomers to STO team.

Here is a gift to all the star trek fans out there that did not know about this new project. www.startrekofgodsandmen.com This is a low budget movie directed by Tim Russ who also played Tuvok. Considering that it is a low budget movie I found it very good. I don't want to spoil anything but you are going to find a lot of familiar characters in this movie. It is about one hour a thirty minutes long. Like I said, it is a low budget movie but it was done nicely. I am a big Star Trek fan and I have to be honest that I loved it.
Again the website is www.startrekofgodsandmen.com
